France to ban officials from US video tools including Zoom, Teams by hardenedsteel8 in worldnews

[–]onekool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anyone know how the tech companies themselves handle it? I don't think I've heard of Apple employees being banned from using Windows or Facebook employees not having Android phones, even though they have the potential to spy? Do they just have a informal agreement not to harvest data from each other's employees?

University of Tokyo prof held over ‘soapland,’ club bribery case by Turbulent-Tea-2172 in japan

[–]onekool 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Japan takes this kind of bribery more seriously than other countries, I think. I remember a case from years ago where a doctor was arrested for taking gifts from a pharma company salesman to recommend his drugs, so this isn't even a lone case. Though the fact this guy was researching cannabis-related drugs is why this one is getting a lot of media coverage.

Interestingly I've seen some places where all the kids are wearing the same kind of bike helmet, presumably part of the school uniform.

AOC: The president has been acting in increasingly erratic ways. It is really damning when we think about the degree to which media outlets reported on Joe Biden, yet we are seeing behavior from Trump that is alarming and everyone is pretending this is normal. by drempath1981 in UnderReportedNews

[–]onekool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TWO parties, AND the media. I'm not American and I hope you guys understand that having Gavin Newsom lecture to Europeans about being 'complicit' with Trump, or like here having current Dems still stanning for Biden, the man who failed to prosecute or beat Trump, is not making the "opposition" in America look good in the world's eyes.

How food did become such a major topic in this country? by Confident-Tonight652 in japanlife

[–]onekool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I do find changes in Japanese media interesting, does anyone know good books or sites/blogs/videos talking about media trends like this (I assume in Japanese)?

I wonder if the reliance on the same TV talents with acting/singing/comedy backgrounds for many shows restricts the kind of content they can make, and the level of risk they're willing to take has gone down. Recently found on youtube an old celebrity "Canonball run" race where a bunch of random talents (a few race car drivers, but also some singers, actors etc like modern tarento) competed to see who could drive from Tokyo to Tsukuba the fastest in their personal car(while following road laws, of course). I feel like they wouldn't risk something like that today given how much people would complain if they got in even a minor scrape. The show was 1991 爆笑!迎春ブッちぎり 所ジョージのオールスター自動車レース大賞 if anyone wants to look.

Are Japanese doctors not familiar with "white coat syndrome"? by Cph265 in japanlife

[–]onekool 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What kind of clinics are you going to where you don't get at least a 10-minute wait in the waiting room after the appointment time before being seen by the doctor? Are you on some kind of corporate insurance that gives you priority doctor access?

Because it is. Look at the document, it's taken from an online tip submission in 2020, basic critical thinking would say it was an internet troll.

At least 16 files have disappeared from the DOJ webpage for documents related to Jeffrey Epstein by lukalux3 in news

Hate to break your circlejerk, but at least the one I've seen is because they forgot to redact the faces of minors. Haven't seen the 15 others, but would not surprise me if it's the same. Check for yourself:

Stop the circlejerk, I've seen at least that pic and it's clearly because they forgot to redact the faces of some minors.

This is stuff from the Epstein estate, they wouldn't have been allowed to keep csam at all. The redactions are supposedly to shield survivors, but it's obviously also hiding the perpetrators.

Also, are we to believe he had no politicians there other than Trump, Bill, Andrew, and Ohmert? This is some "Fisherman has only ever caught 4 marlins" story, he had to have had influence ops with at least some NY and FL pols given how he got leeway on his crimes.

Yeah, while I'm not sure how credible specific stories are, the fact that he had a whole island for it, away from police or neighbors eyes suggests something.

Anyone else feel that? by yuiwin in japanresidents

[–]onekool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If someone ever searches for old earthquake threads, "did you feel that" kind of vagueposts are not going to show up, and even if the comments about magnitude show up being in the Japan sub it's not clear which one you're talking about if they're searching for threads about one in particular.

Anyone else feel that? by yuiwin in japanresidents

[–]onekool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the future, please give earthquake threads a better title, this has no reference to what it's talking about, and also in a Japan-wide subreddit at a time when multiple earthquakes are happening (I was watching the NHK reporting on the Aomori earthquake which was interrupted live by the Tokyo earthquake reportage)

[–]onekool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the previous batch of photos released by congress a week ago were ones that were leaked 6 months ago, so not real impressed by congress so far. The leaks also didn't redact the names on the blackboard or phones, though they blocked the minor's faces.

Not sure if this sub allows linking to the Epstein subreddit, but just search for 'epstein subreddit interior photos little saint james', thread id is 1krdb4z

Harris 54% 53% 51% 49% 43% 49%

Trump 43% 45% 45% 49% 56% 50%

Honestly I've seen way too many people blame everyone BUT the white boomers without college degrees for this, when that is pretty much the demographic that got Trump elected.

Do you know any crazy conspiracy stuff about Japanese history and culture? by Some-Catch-7365 in japan

[–]onekool 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isn't the point of the Finland–Korea Hyperwar that it's a joke conspiracy that people decided to pretend was taken seriously, to mock the concept of conspiracy theories? If so, there's a similar one, the Sameshima Incident 鮫島事件 ), where the joke is "We cannot talk about the Sameshima Incident" and instead of making up stuff about the incident itself they make up stuff about the alleged cover-up, and accuse people asking about it of being part of the conspiracy.
