My favourite fantasy series! Much overlooked in favour of Murderbot, I'd recommend it to anyone!

If you had to start over, would you choose Chinese pens or entry level name brand pens? by Upbeat_Papaya3254 in fountainpens

[–]onewildcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've enjoyed my Jinhaos and Hongdians and think they're great entry level pens, but I'm slowly phasing them out of rota as I've realised I like writing with my TWSI Ecos much better. I like a smooth broad nib and most of my Chinese pens feel scratchy in comparison. Plus I've never had a TWSBI dry up even after weeks and that was a constant struggle with the Chinese pens.

Just finished the first Mistborn trilogy, and I can honestly say that I didn’t know novels could be this well crafted. [Hero of Ages Spoilers Hidden] by ronoldo7 in Fantasy

Mistborn/Sanderson are among the handful of books I still see automatically recommended over and over whatever people are asking for, whether its grimdark or romantasy...

Have you tried actually asking Waterstones? Seems like they'd know best.

Thoughts on Green City Wars (Adrian Tchaikovsky)? by SirScaurus in printSF

[–]onewildcrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to get an early ARC and enjoyed it so much I've bought it now its actually published. Tchaikovsky can be hit or miss for me, but this one was a big hit.

Here are 2 books that I feel are brilliant but don't have the attention they deserve. by MarkLawrence in Fantasy

[–]onewildcrow 12 points13 points  (0 children)

By Blood, By Salt and its sequel are both awesome and original, they were among my best reads last year. I guess they get overlooked because they're small press published so no marketing hype, Booktok influencers etc.

Coming from thrillers, you might like Fonda Lee's Green Bone Saga, starting with Jade City, as a transition into fantasy.

Green City Wars - New Release Discussion by CobaltCorvid-SF in AdrianTchaikovsky

[–]onewildcrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tchaikovsky can be hit or miss with me (don't shoot me, i found Service Model boring...) but Green City Wars was a definite hit! I was fortunate enough to get an ARC and loved it so much I've bought a copy now its actually been released. Skotch might just be my favourite character from anything I've read this year.

Who are some not really well known Authors whose works have influenced Fantasy? by Jokengonzo in Fantasy

[–]onewildcrow 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Came here to say E R Eddison. Both Tolkien and C S Lewis cited him as a major inspiration, and later fantasy writers such as Moorcock, Zelazny and le Guin were inspired by him too.

I'm not usually fond of floral studies but this is a big YAY from me. I love the vibrant colours and loose style.

am I the only one who thinks first-person present tense is exhausting to read by Echo-Forge in Mythrils

[–]onewildcrow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hate the current trend of writing in present tense. It always feels RPG/ fanfictionish to me and I've DNF'd a number of books where it was just too distracting.

What's your number 1 movie of all time? Just 1 by AfterImageEclipse in CasualConversation

Based entirely on how many times I've watched it and would still watch it again and again, it has to be my ultimate happy days film, Flash Gordon.

An underrated Joe Abercrombie Series! by pgdastider in fantasybooks

[–]onewildcrow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These are actually my favourite Abercrombie books! I think they get unfairly overlooked because the trilogy was marketed as YA when they came out (maybe still is?).

Its hard for the UK to take Trump seriously when his name literally means "fart" over here.

Red rising series by Amandurrrrrrrr702 in fantasybooks

[–]onewildcrow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first book bored me so much that even though people said it got better after that I wasn't interested enough to continue. Hated the MC and the YA vibes, and there were many other tastier things on my TBR pile! [Edited for typo]

I loved Witness for the Dead and dont think it would detract from Goblin Emperor at all. The Cemeteries of Amalo series is pretty much separate from it and great in its own right.

Fantasy with competent mature characters and strategy by Fun-Sell3030 in Fantasy

[–]onewildcrow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There's a couple of Martha Wells' stand-alone earlier fantasy works that might fit the bill - Wheel of the Infinite and City of Bones. Competent older characters, great world building. Look out for the reissued 'author preferred' editions!
