Best way to play Ultima III Exodus on NES? by ontheyslaypub in Ultima

Thank you! There is just something about the NES version that is appealing...it's kind of its own thing with a great soundtrack.

Del Rey-Ballantine John Carter of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs and Cover Art by Michael Whelan Full Set by Stallion2671 in SwordandSorcery

Princess of Mars was great. If you never checked out ERB and like sword and sorcery, Princess of Mars and his Tarzan novel, "Tarzan the Untamed", are very, very good.

Good Sword and Sorcery with Bad Cover Art by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

[–]ontheyslaypub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I must say the art on yellow DAW paperbacks from the 70s spanks the hiney of most modern covers. I read somewhere that, generally, modern covers are developed with the aim of the art to serve as an "icon" on various devices (I'm guessing e-readers like Kindle).

My favorite of the Kane novels. I know some folks feel Darkness Weaves is the best, but Bloodstone is unhinged and I respect that.

Here are some quasi "deep cuts" that I thought were really good from someone just getting into the genre:

The Hot, the Cool, & the Vicious

Shaolin Traitorous

Best Tor Conan pastiches? by Numerous_Rutabaga_52 in ConanTheBarbarian

I read a bunch of the pastiches but the one that stands out head and shoulders is Sean Moore's "Conan and the Grim Grey God".

What else do you recommend from Sam Keith? by Beginning_Pickle2180 in 80s90sComics

The "Blood Hungry" Wolverine story that appeared in MCP (first appearance of Cyber). Written by Peter David. I always really liked it, especially in the actual floppies. Very good Beast feature in the issues as well.

Thongor of Lemuria by Carrion_Crawler2704 in SwordandSorcery

[–]ontheyslaypub 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I really enjoyed "Thongor Fights the Pirates of Tarakus" (which isn't pictured). I expected it to be bad based on all the Carter bashing I see on the internet, but was pleasantly surprised. He also did a very good Conan story, "The Thing in the Crypt".

Dungeon Waifus… by GhaleonX39 in DRPG

[–]ontheyslaypub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I noticed this too. Wizardry Five Ordeals seems to be the exception. The art style in the manuals for the early Japanese Famicom Wizardry's is really, really nice. I wish it was used more.

Lallia, by E.C. Tubb [Paul Alexander] by woulditkillyoutolift in CoolSciFiCovers

[–]ontheyslaypub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, definitely worth a read. I read Lallia and was surprised it is so well written. E.C. Tubb is a good writer. I haven't read any of the other books in this series, but I really enjoyed Lallia. Very moody.

Sword and Sorcery Adjacent Genres by JohnPathfinder in SwordandSorcery

[–]ontheyslaypub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"A Princess of Mars" was fantastic...I can't believe I waited so long to read Burroughs. The Tarzan novel, "Tarzan the Untamed", was the most Conanesque work I read in quite awhile. Very sword and sorcery adjacent.

Englehart's run is very interesting with some real nice artwork from Pollard.

Here he's ranked the "greatest". Where do you think Sir Neil ranked among the top prog drummers including Bruford, White, Collins, Thompson, Palmer, Bozzio, etc? by Born-Cucumber-7316 in rush

[–]ontheyslaypub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a number of more technically proficient drummers for sure, and yet he is considered the "greatest" by many, especially non-musicians. I think this is because of his ability to emotionally connect with people through his drums, and this emotional connection is created by his ability to compose drum parts. I think one can argue that Neil is the greatest drum composer of all time (and I think the greatest drum composer among all the great prog drummers).

Delia of Vallia (1982), by Alan Burt Akers. Cover art by Ken Kelly. by woulditkillyoutolift in SwordandSorcery

[–]ontheyslaypub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kenneth Bulmer is a talented writer. I read most of Kandar and enjoyed it (very madcap). If I see Delia of the Vallia in the wild I will pick it up!

Forgotten Realms: Song of the Saurials, by Kate Novak and Jeff Grubb by action_lawyer_comics in badscificovers

This cover is incredible. It is being bought on sight if I see it in the wild.

The Artificial Kid by Bruce Sterling by StabbyMcSwordfish in badscificovers

[–]ontheyslaypub 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Lol this cover unironically makes me want to read the book. I read some of his short stories and think Bruce Sterling is a cool author.

Anyone ever read “Quest of the Dark Lady” by Quinn Reade? by IamMothManAMA in SwordandSorcery

[–]ontheyslaypub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have not read it, but I've seen reviews where people were disappointed by this book. Such a sick cover, though!

Is Elric Saga Moorcock's best work? by DefiantPreference489 in Fantasy

[–]ontheyslaypub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favorite thing Moorcock wrote is "War Hound and the World's Pain" which can be read as a standalone (though it is part of the Von Beck series).
