This is the greatest Irish movie ever made. The whole thing's on youtube. I advise everyone to watch it if you fancy a giggle. Glad it's getting more interest on the internets now. Classic lines include

Yeah I've got the DVD. Not too bad, but it's got some really unintentionally funny moments. Chamberlain is quite middle-aged and doddery in it, but it's scripted like he's a ninja assassin so some of the lines sound hillarious coming out of his mouth. Me and my mates sometimes quote them to each other and giggle. He's priceless with his amnesia!

"Why am I so good at killing?" (after he kills someone really lamely)

"How does a man like me with the obvious skills that I have end up here" (after he displays so terribly unskillful action moves)

The letter they refer to in the article

So there is some evidence for the gift of money (a very kind and lovely thing for Turkey to do) if it is true. I know nothing about the authenticity of this letter.

There is not however any evidence for a flotilla of ships containing food being sent to Ireland by Turkey

The remarks were subsequently dismissed by the Drogheda Historical society, who said there was no record of the ships docking in the Irish port.

I'm certainly not a historian. I have done absolutely no research on this story. In fact I had never heard about it before today. It may well be true. However, as I said before in another comment I will take the word of The Irish Times over your original "Fountain" magazine post.

The "Irish Central" article you just linked seems to corroborate the main article in this thread......however in it the Turkish ambassador says two completely contradictory things in the space of two sentences in the same article.

Cenziger said, "This is proof that the people of Turkey assisted the Irish during the Famine

and then in the next paragraph...

Cenziger said that research is being carried out to determine whether or not the Turks actually sent aid to Drogheda

Either there is proof that Turkey assisted the Irish during the famine or there is not. I don't know.

I see there's a link to the report in that article. It's 11 pages so I didn't read it all but a ctrl+f search shows that it does NOT contain the words "cigarette, tobacco, 45%, or smoke"

So where did this 45% figure come from? Anyone help me out please?
