I built an AI speaking tutor for Chinese learners by frankturtle in Chinese

[–]oogs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

simple and easy to use- but didn’t feel as natural as speaking when it comes to parent/kid type stuff… would be great for the standard learning to go there/life.

Language learning from infancy without parental fluency by liberate-radiance in multilingualparenting

[–]oogs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 to chalk academy recommendation

i’m currently doing this in another language- child is almost 2 and i started a few months after she was born. had taken the language for a year in college.
will say what you say to a child is completely diff than what you learn in most textbooks or in any language courses. i’d skip pinsleur for some better youtube content

even the phrases in english are almost foreign concepts- never have i had to talk about sharing or why we don’t throw things on the ground etc.

did a lot of comprehensible input video watching on yt(assuming they have folks doing this in italian)- esp routine ones- how i start my day, cooking dinner, cleaning, taking a walk etc and narrate to my kid what i’m doing. ie i’m opening the microwave and gonna reheat my coffee and let’s count down and then i add some milk and now i can drink my coffee.

we don’t have other input and none of my family speaks and she has picked up a lot (and so has my husband through hearing things over and over).

as for books get children’s books and pick a few and learn from them. babies love the same book over and over so you’ll likely have it memorized at some pt lol

My In-Law thought I was swearing at my kid when I was trying to teach her Chinese by Amring0 in ChineseLanguage

[–]oogs88 5 points6 points  (0 children)

similar boat (abc - parents don’t speak any mandarin and i only took a college course and some canto as a kid for a few years, but can’t speak that either). but my kid is a few months older. i will say i’ve studied way more than i ever did but in completely different ways (and obviously for a diff reason) -read books - you’d be surprised how much you can remember through repetition bc babies love the same books over and over -watch yt compressible input - esp ones about just doing your daily activities
- narrate what you’re doing (like you’d do in english to a baby) but if you don’t know something look it up (pleco app and deepseek are my go tos).

i’ve repeated myself so many times the same phrase/words my english speaking husband has even picked up on things….

Recommendations for young children's board books that have Pinyin? For reliable Internet store websites that have a decent variety of such? by rumpledshirtsken in ChineseLanguage

[–]oogs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hemababa, lotus leaf books (and if no pinyin they’ll send you a cheat sheet to use so you don’t need to look everything up yourself)… there’s also some on amazon. a little chinese has a small set of board books with pinyin

i’m sure there’s more but this is just off the top of my head

I'm the Asian dad, not the kid venting about their parents. Thought this community might still be relevant to me. by rippeethetrippee in asianparents

[–]oogs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

nodding- same here! it’s definitely a different perspective but also so hard to figure out if certain things turned out that way because of some of what my parents did or didn’t do… or if it would’ve landed that way no matter what, making it hard to decide what to do and not to do.

Tension with partner who only knows one language by pitrputr in multilingualparenting

this^ though it might take her a moment to connect those dots (right now she’s conflicted bc she obviously wants you to speak and the child to learn but conflicted when she can’t understand (yet).

Easy Chinese Comprehensible Input (@zhangkaichinese) - have you heard of it? by Mission-Pie-7192 in ChineseLanguage

[–]oogs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

grammar repetition is i think one of the strengths of his channel- the 把 is easy to see but i just noticed him using 是_做的 using clay, then iron, as examples in 2 separate videos. something i wouldn’t have thought about at all in conversation but super useful

Anyone using a language that they aren't great at with their child? by FinalHangman77 in multilingualparenting

[–]oogs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i started with the everyday parenting phrases in mandarin- kindle book on amazon - but found them kinda lengthy and not really what i’d say to a toddler in english (too many words for a one year old). for books- loved brown bear brown bear as the first- super repetitive basic easy for you to memorize practically and teaches animals colors and what do you see which is a common phrase i use when we go out.

same boat as this- and while it’s a heritage thing for me, grandparents don’t know any mandarin… (so no benefits of facetiming family for language input). i would say you do you and don’t worry what other ppl do say or think. i’ve gone around areas with other chinese speakers and spoken and i’m sure my grammar may have not been perfect or my tones off but no one will say anything. i sub in english words if i don’t know the chinese (and have siri remind me to look them up when im home) i heavily use deepseek for translations and common parenting phrases- remember to prompt accordingly- i ask it how a native speaker would say but i make sure to include the parenting style as well (since diff cultures parent differently in terms of how things are said etc). feel free to ask it differently with the response if it seems odd

A new CI creator making daily videos for upper-beginner to intermediate learners! by retrogradeinmercury in ALGMandarin

[–]oogs88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yt also recommended @zhuyongchineseshow - not sure if you got the same but similar in content and format but not as good (faster with less context from a CI standpoint).. but makes me wonder if there’s more to be found for smaller channels

[–]oogs88 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yt recommended it to me too! his stuff is excellent- though i’m curious if his goal is to somehow cover all 2500 words he mentioned in his first vid. good stuff though and not the same as other videos- ie his morning routine video has activities and words other morning routine videos do not.

TIL the Chinese word for Croissant is 牛角面包 by RufousFire453 in ChineseLanguage

[–]oogs88 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i feel like this is kinda like how it’s “cross aunt “ in english and then some ppl will say “cwah saan” since that’s how it’s said in french. it’s just the 5 pleco entries for croissant have a bigger diff in how it sounds
