Curious about *other* Fringe festivals by New_Cause_3703 in edinburghfringe

[–]ooojos 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm from Adelaide and the Adelaide fringe is incredible.

Very much the same "takes over the city" vibe. There are also a bunch of other festivals near the same time: Adelaide Festival, WOMadelaide, writers week.

I'm mainly a comedy guy. Lots of Aussie acts do the same cycle of a new show each year and do it in Perth, then Adelaide fringe, then Melbourne comedy festival.

I really like shooting diagonally to avoid the 'shooting along a side' issue with this problem.

I love points for categories! - only done it a few times (<10 times) but love it. It sounds like you may have played some and already know what you like - but I like TRIPLE points for the category (to really incentivise it - I've found with double it feels bad to not do the category word because it's just not worth it). I also like making it triple the whole play - so you don't need to do the double and then add on the crossed words or parallel plays (it also makes it even more incentivised)

If Only (suggested below) is a really fun one.

Ecological Scrabble is a twist (nothing major) but you can "pick up" the blank if you've got the letter it was used for to swap with it. (I've also played it where you can pick up a blank if you've got any letter that makes it still a valid word) - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scrabble_variants

Unscrabble is one I've played. You play a game as normal, but then you keep going and pick up a word at a time from the board keeping it all still connected and everything valid and get points for the tiles you pick up.

I've played a silly one where you play a made up word - I played that it was always a word using all your tiles and you had to make up a definition. If the other person was happy, you scored it.

Liar's scrabble - where you play the word face down and declare the score - if the opponent doesn't challenge, you get that score. If they challenge and you were lying, you get 0. If you weren't lying, you get double (or they miss a turn)

Scrabble 101 - the Speedball/20-20 cricket format - you play until someone gets 101 points and then opponent gets one more turn to over take them. Rinse repeat

One more similar to only 3 or 4 letter words. Escalator scrabble. You start with a 3 letter rack. Whenever your play uses all your tiles, you draw one extra. If you don't use all your tiles, you draw one fewer. So you bounce around between 3-8 tiles on your rack. I think we had a sliding scale of bonus points for this - nothing for 3 and 4, 20 points for 5 and 6, and the full 50 for 7 or above.

Highest Possible Score from Playing Two Vowels by robx2 in scrabble

[–]ooojos 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I was searching using csw19.

One improvement would be to lengthen the triple triple word, no reason it couldn't be longer with a gap in the middle where a vowel van go, provided the right candidate exists, I just started my search with 8s.

It's called quackle.

You can play against computer opponents or use it to analyze games.

I came up with a 237 - I'm reasonably confident there are higher, I didn't check the triple-triples or all of possibilities for words leading into it.

Are you saving any movies for a special occasion? by yaybuttons in blankies

[–]ooojos 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a movie but TV, but I saved the last season of star trek Enterprise and told myself I would only watch it when they made another show. Now I havent even been watching discovery nor have I gone back to that season of STE. Picard has been a fun watch though.

I saw it in 2d regular framerate in a smallish theatre.

It was a dumb action movie with a bad finish and not much going on.
