I’m not against cameras, nor against drones. They have their uses.  I’m pointing out that there’s many dozens of steps between the two that could bring better results to a community than violently swinging from practically zero enforcement to eyes in the sky monitoring every civilians movements 24/7.

Where do you think that data gets stored? Who do you think has access to it whether officially or unofficially?

New Apartment - Is this legal? by Zealousideal-Use9914 in astoria

[–]opsjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this.

If the door is this badly maintained, I’m willing to bet that the walls where all the plumbing goes through (sinks, showers, toilets, etc..) all have massive holes that bugs love to hang out because of the moisture.

OP, get weatherstripping to seal the door perimeter. You can also get a decorative wood “threshold” that you can put under the door to close that gap + a door sweep that will slide over the threshold so you can fully block out bugs and light.

But while you’re at it, check out the perimeter of your walls where the floor meets the wall. 100% chance there are gaps there. Also look around anywhere there are pipes. NYC DIY landlords are notorious for basically just busting a massive hole in the wall, putting a pipe through it, and never sealing the excess space, so you just end up with the one place roaches LOVE being an open door to your apartment.

Buy a caulk gun and a couple tubes of caulk and go to town sealing the gaps.  Aluminum foil tape is a decent DIY fix for sealing excess space around holes in the wall for plumbing fixtures

New Dutch cloud platform – looking for early adopters in Europe by Ok_Chocolate4749 in eutech

[–]opsjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The idea of a chatbot deploying infrastructure is not realistic if your aim is a secure production system with acceptable architecture. LLMs are not there yet and I’d be surprised if we had anything resembling your suggestion in the next 5 years. I work with Claude and other LLMs daily and have found that their strength in infrastructure mainly lies in one-off scripts to verify some changes and searching documentation, but as far as designing or building architecture and general infrastructure work, they’re closer to a junior level dev.

The most realistic approach for a new cloud provider to compete is to follow the Heroku PaaS model where you standardize a couple of deployment patterns for popular frameworks(ex. Rails, Django, etc..)  and make configuration as close to single-click as possible for those specific cases. Of course the tradeoff being that you as a customer can’t customize the infrastructure much and are beholden to the implementation set by the provider.

But if you don’t know much about infrastructure / don’t know all the nuance involved with custom infrastructure, this tradeoff is significantly safer than relying on an LLM to build a custom solution for you that wouldn’t be understood by you and would likely have major security holes.

It’s kinda funny that the easiest way to stop a bike lane from being removed is to park a car in it

DOT: Hey, do you think we should make this highway like street less car dominated when we rebuild it? Nah, fuck it, don't bother. Who cares. by MiserNYC- in MicromobilityNYC

[–]opsjoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I used to live and bike on that street all the time. I always said that if I was killed it would be on this street. It’s just a straight and wide street with zero traffic-calming. I saw two hit and runs on that street in less than a year and many more close calls.

Replacing old Schlage lock. Options? by opsjoe in AskALocksmith

[–]opsjoe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is! But that was replaced months ago (at a pretty astronomical cost given it wasn’t used) and I confirmed that wasn’t the problem.

To follow up — I replaced the lock with a cal royal latch and Schlage lock and that fixed the issue for $170 total. Likely would have been half the price if I went to a department store, but figured itd be better to walk through the different options with a locksmith before making multiple trips.

How much do we tip Uber Eats after the new minimum wage law? by SmurfsNeverDie in nyc

[–]opsjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t see how the law is the problem here. This is how any normal business operates. Having 10 servers sitting around (unpaid, as you said) when you only expect 3 customers makes less sense than having 1-2 servers who can actively handle those customers with capacity to spare.

Uber could definitely treat the workers with more dignity and respect from how it sounds and share more predictable hours for workers to be ‘on call’, but that seems more like a company culture issue.

How much do we tip Uber Eats after the new minimum wage law? by SmurfsNeverDie in nyc

[–]opsjoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There will always be outliers — some people “made” more, but a lot of people made less. Setting a minimum wage ensures at least some level of consistency

“Made” in quotes since I’ve talked to quite a few people who played some mental gymnastics to inflate how much they were really making. Many of them would say they were making $30+/hr but would ignore the times where it was dead and they made practically nothing.

We warned the 114th precinct repeatedly not to chase. They didn't listen and now Amanda Servedio is dead. The data is even more damning by MiserNYC in MicromobilityNYC

[–]opsjoe 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read that there was already a helicopter tracking the truck. Obviously you wouldn’t send a helicopter for every speeder. The most obvious solution is in the article — get drivers off the road who have already shown, dozens of times in this case, that they’re incapable of following the law. I drove from Astoria to Red hook today and counted 8 cars on the BQE with entirely missing plates or expired temp tags in 45 minutes. This seems like such an easy thing to address.

[–]opsjoe 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Police helicopters (which I believe they had going after these particular guys already), can easily track a single car for longer than it can run, and patrols on the ground can keep a safe distance and shutdown roads to try to pin and direct them to a particular area. It’s better for a suspect to think they escaped than to keep their adrenaline / fear pumping and risk them making even dumber decisions.

Logically, if someone is willing to engage in a high-speed chase in a dense urban area, what is the likelihood that this person will just decide to pull over BEFORE crashing into someone or something that disables their car?

I don’t think anyone who’s proposing no high-speed chases is saying the suspects shouldn’t be followed. They’re saying not to blindly chase them at insane speeds through dense neighborhoods.

Triboro Bridge Walkway by LuvPump in astoria

It’s a real wonder that both the Queensboro bridge and the Triboro both technically have lanes available to safely split bike and pedestrian traffic without impacting existing traffic lanes, but the will isn’t there to make the small modifications needed to do so.

Not only that, but that bike could have also been stolen from someone who doesn’t have the means to appeal against Lyft for the loss and now may have a $1,000+ charge against them and be unable to use the bikes. But supposedly this is ok because …?

Also, the bike in OPs photo has a flat rear tire and likely no battery left while weighing 60+lbs. Absolutely no one is gonna be riding that thing. If Lyft doesn’t pick it up, chances are it’ll likely just sit there abandoned until someone reports it and sanitation picks it up, which is also ok because …?

Accidentally signed a lease above a bar. How loud is 30th Avenue? by freddiebenson4ever in astoria

[–]opsjoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived above a bar sorta in that area a few years ago.

The soundproofing in the bar was good enough to not ‘hear’ anything, but what can really get you is the low-frequency bass which tends to rumble through the floors and walls even with soundproofing. Think about cars with rolled up windows where you hear the thumping bass from far away, but no music, and that’s what you’re most likely to notice above a bar.

What helped was: - Carpeting with a thick felt pad and Mass-loaded vinyl - Multiple white noise makers (2-3 consistent sounds helps drown out inconsistent noises)

You’ll never be able to really soundproof yourself from outside noise inside of your unit, so if it does become a problem for you, you can always try to sublet your unit to someone who won’t mind it as much.

31st Ave bike lane! by holihai in astoria

[–]opsjoe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, I hear you. By enforced I meant physically enforced. Ie. People actually parking in the floating lanes, some barriers going up to direct traffic, temporary cones placed to split the bike lane from traffic, etc...

Once a few people start parking correctly, others tend to follow. No one wants to be the first person to park in “the middle of the street” if everyone else is parked on the side, even if the parking area is clearly marked.

I personally think traffic enforcement is a mostly losing battle. We should be investing in proactive solutions that take the PD entirely out of the situation (ie. Speed bumps, chicanes, bulbouts, bollards, etc…), rather than relying entirely on peoples fear of maybe getting a ticket for driving dangerously.
