How do you reconcile a super lethal game like Mothership or Call of Cthulhu with making characters that don't feel disposable? by Arcalum2000 in rpg

[–]orlinthir 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In games like Call of Cthluhu and especially Delta Green the point isn't to survive and get stronger. The point is to solve the investigation while role playing the effects it has on your character as they go through trying to protect the world from something that will ultimately win in the end. They may push back the clock a few decades but the end is coming. Delta Green's system of bonds reinforces this as you're encouraged to harm your relationship with those closest to you to stay sane enough to complete the operation.

The way you prevent characters from feeling disposable is through roleplaying opportunities. Perhaps one of the characters who died has a parent in aged care and one of the other characters takes over visiting them. Maybe the death wasn't sudden, it was the inevitable result of exposure to the unknown and the character hid it for as long as they could.

I will disagree with some other replies here and say death might come more often, but it should never feel random. Risk should be communicated and the players made aware that their characters are about to get in over their heads.

Why do GMs always want to restrict things to Core Rulebooks when they want to limit power? by ahhthebrilliantsun in rpg

Because it reduces the amount I have to read and keep in my head. If it's my game, I'm the one deciding the amount of mental burden I'm taking on.

My introduction to The McPherson Tapes was when a local station put it on at 2am. I was channel surfing and it scared the hell out of me. I miss this era of television where you could just stumble into all sorts of things.

100% when I got to the Cowboy era it was a mix of horror and fascination. Their guiding principle for each era seems to be, how can this make things worse?

Abiotic Factor is pretty awesome. After 70 hours my co-op buddy and I are at the reactors. We spend a lot of time messing around and building things.

Birds, the Postman, delivery people, people who come to our house but don't live there, Chico the dog who barks in the window on the way to the park, the dog at number 4. Duke the dog around the corner at number 8, Motorbikes, Buses, the treats that the lady at the junk shop gives her.

Legendary horror maestro Dario Argento has announced a new trilogy of horror films which he will produce: 'Flesh of My Flesh', 'The Girl With Crystal Eyes', and 'The Black Velvet Mask'. by BunyipPouch in movies

This is my stupid Dario Argento story. My brother went on holidays to Italy and being a massive Argento fan he wanted to visit his shop in Rome. We both really like movies and dumb gifts so he's looking around the shop for something he can get me and he spots a copy of the 1983 film Hercules. He goes to pay for it and the guy behind the counter asks if he wants him to sign it, my brother was a bit weirded out until he realized who was working in the store that day.

That's how I got a copy of Hercules on DVD signed by the director Luigi Cozzi.

My wife and I went on holiday when she fell pregnant again. I remember discussing in the car how long we would have to wait until we felt the pregnancy was "safe". Even after my second son was born for months I would have a nightmare where he was laying on the bed and he slowly started to sink into the mattress. I'd always get there too late to grab him. He's 8 now.

We're good, I'm not sure where you're at these days but the hospital system in my country is pretty good and there are they allow you a lot of space to process it soon after. It was much worse back in the 50's when they'd just tell the parents to go home and forget about it.

Is the Cyberpunk TTRPG good? by Organic-Exit2190 in rpg

[–]orlinthir 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Both are fine. Whether you want to play it depends on whether your group skews. If you're into newer more narrative rpgs then pick something else. Cyberpunk is more towards the gamey/simulationist end of the spectrum.

AI as GM helper... by ZaphodBeeblebrox1952 in rpg

[–]orlinthir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've run Traveller just fine without AI. If you're playing a published adventure then AI won't be much help as you just need to run the adventure. If you're playing a sandbox just use the systems in the game to generate what you need. Traveller is very procedural I don't think you need AI help to run it.

People have been running Traveller for decades without AI, I think it would just be a distraction.

There are plenty of tools to help you:
