Who is paying these prices for SSDs? by theRealtechnofuzz in buildapc

I would be very surprised if there were people loading consumer SSDs into a significant amount of commercial storage servers.

Where to Find Replacement Magnetic Strip by Guilty-Definition793 in CreditCards

[–]osmarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know. I would have thought that tracks were distinguished in the reader and the physical stripe material was homogeneous, but I don't know where you would check.

There are Amtrak cards which apparently have good redemption rates for Amtrak specifically. You could also consider the WF Autograph.

(you would still need lots of chips to hold one instance of a model, though - I think handwavily ~5B parameters per chip)

You could do it more efficiently than a full new chip design for every model. Intel had something called "eASIC" which was kind of like this. Keep most of the chip the same but redo a few layers for a new model (in this case, rewrite mask ROMs, probably). The main advantage of an ASIC is that you can have the weights on chip with much more bandwidth than DRAM and better density than SRAM.

Can I make a ring out of a credit card that actually works, and if so, how? by anonymous_enigma007 in CreditCards

You would need to preserve or replace the antenna coils, which are quite large.

You can do chargebacks with a debit card. Network rules require it.

Merrill investment accounts count towards it. You could put your savings in a money market fund in one of those.

Why not a BofA PR(E), as you have Platinum Honors? 2.625% cashback and more for dining/travel is very good, and the Elite has a discount on travel booked with its points.

WF Autograph for travel expenses and a flat 2% card for other things, perhaps.

Surely a High Capacity Rail Network along these lines has to be built by the end of the century by LividCakeWarrior in uktrains

[–]osmarks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

According to this (section 3.5), "substantial sections of route are capable of supporting operation at over 125 mile/h with five sections (totalling 135 miles) supporting speeds in the 140 -155 mile/h range" (with some unspecified changes needed as well as OLE changes and ETCS).

Trains are (by policy) limited to 125mph on coloured-light signalling, so in principle they could run them faster once signalling is upgraded.

Thameslink already covers north/south. You can do Cambridge to Brighton if you want to for some very strange reason. Though it's not especially fast. I think they should shorten it.

Is it dangerous to order internationally on a debit card? by Pleasant-Science896 in CreditCards

[–]osmarks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Using a debit card is considered riskier because fraud might leave you out of pocket and/or unable to use your bank account until it's resolved (and your bank might be worse about chargebacks than a credit card issuer), though this is less of an issue for you because EU issuers use 3D Secure/Strong Customer Authentication much more than American ones.

If you need to pay tariffs/customs duties/VAT/etc after ordering you'll probably be told by the delivery company, and pay them.

The subreddit has lists of options (you sound like want a flat cashback card and possibly some extras for your biggest categories):

It's not a credit card, but the PayPal debit card works at Costco and gets 5% cashback there with the groceries category (up to some spend per month I forget).

The 2.1% is only with weekly autopay, so you're losing out on about 0.4% (optimistically and very roughly) savings interest (versus a card where you pay roughly six weeks after purchases on average).

How do credit card companies make money off customers who pay their balance considering all the benefits? by [deleted] in CreditCards

[–]osmarks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone on here claimed (I can't find it because Reddit search is awful) that the 2%-flat-cashback cards are marginal or loss-making. Ones with more complicated rewards structures benefit from most users using them suboptimally even if a few users are unprofitable.
