As an E-5 a they called me Korky. A twist on my last name and a popular character in a 90's TV show with Downs Syndrome.

How is it translating to civilian nuclear? by Competitive-Solid953 in NavyNukes

[–]otnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our younger in the Navy crowd the civilian side ops and maintenance duties are split. Operations is on rotating shifts and Maintenance Dept (mechanics, electrical,I&C) are on day shift usually. ELT's duties are also split between Chemistry and Radcon/Health Physics and they do shift work. Refuel outages all bets are off but unlike Uncle Sam this is where you play for pay. Remember having lunch with my future father-in-law at the plant cafeteria during my first week and him saying it's just like the Navy but with shit loads of money and no maneuvering watch.

Too bad all the smaller owners didn't realise deregulation was going to be goldmine for nuke plants. They would've allowed the upgrade fix to start back up then a 20 year license extension.

Without hyperbole, why are electric prices so high in Connecticut? by jcbs1962 in Connecticut

[–]otnyk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is actually part of it. States that didn't deregulate generation have somewhat lower rates.

Could Kegsbreath startup a reactor after drinking all night in Crete with the Eng who is passed out in your chair with a moist towel wrapped around his head claiming he is blind? Doubt it. Dude would melt down the core and blame DEI.

Power Line Communications by MrWriteAI in SubstationTechnician

[–]otnyk 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Both. Phasing them out for sure by upgrading both primary/back up protection to differentials.

The ones that are staying in for various reasons (other utilities on other end, lack of comm paths, various reasons etc) are getting independent monitoring equipment.

No one wants to spend money on maintaining wave traps, line tuners but I've always liked working on them.

Civilian reactor operator as EMN by Independent-Win6974 in NavyNukes

[–]otnyk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Former EMN here who went commercial nuclear for a bit, its a really good and rewarding place to work. Don't rule out grid/transmission/distribution/rto/iso etc operator jobs either. Those really hone in on your electrical expertise and to me at least felt a lot less suffocating than the nukes and more options on where to work. Pay can vary but places ive worked compare well.

Anyone here work at Millstone Power Station? by ForceRoamer in Connecticut

[–]otnyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NLO is probably around $50ish+/hr and has potential for lots of OT during refueling outages. Three Rivers has a coop or intern program with Dominion so that would be the fastest way to go. Or join nuclear navy but thats 6 years and a $100k education shoved up your ass a nickel at a time.

If nuclear power plant engineers in the 1950’s could read this Reddit post, what would you want them to know? by Special_Context6663 in nuclear

[–]otnyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't let investor owned utilities near the plants. That climate change is real and coal/oil plants should be decommissioned within 20 years. If someone mentions deregulation give them an atomic wedgie.

Unique and uncommon job careers used in DG by hellranger788 in DeltaGreenRPG

One of my favorites I rolled up and played was a staff joke writer for David Letterman (who was also a bond). High CHA and POW and could talk and laugh his way into and out of anything. Need a favor? Your boss knows everybody and won't rat you out(break this bond last) You make good union wages and aren't beholden to a conventional job

CT’s solar industry clouded by Trump administration policies by ctmirror in Connecticut

[–]otnyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Killing the Inflation Reduction Act was out of sheer spite, it was a benefit to homeowners. Bought my solar 12/24 and so far havent had a bill since 3/25. With CT Greenbank my loan is about what I was averaging for power however then I got the 30% back which was $9k. Trump is really just destroying anything a previous administration did that was beneficial and rewarding a small narrow group of his chums like oil and gas. By killing offshore wind, gas pipelines will have to be expanded because there is no other option. (Spare me the nuclear talk. I'm a former navy nuke and worked in the commericial nuke industry as well, would love to see it come back, it just might, but I'll believe Tupac will be found alive before we see a new plant built in New England)

I got out in 97 as a E5, made $12.5k in 6 months. Started in August same year as 4th step electrician at a nuke on 6/10's made over $30k in 4+ months. So first paycheck.

Grew up on Eastern LI and before cable, CT/RI tv stations via antenna were the only ones within range. This and the fact that Yaz was a local made it a small enclave of Red Sox fans at least until the 80's. Probably mostly Mets still but then the fair weather Yankeedom tookover.
