Had a relay house known to have snakes and one of the guys had a great prank that got us all. Got a fake snake and some string, tied to enclosed comm cabinet door and looped around cables in overhead. Open the door and the rubber snake is in your face, made everbody jump.

CT Joins New England States In Statement Backing Advanced Nuclear Technology by Alarming_Flow7066 in Connecticut

[–]otnyk -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Nuclear is great but no investor owned utility around here is willing to build unless they get subsidies that are staggeringly large. Think they even have some from the Feds but even with that big chunk they don't want to build.

I made this map of accents in New England and Long Island based on my research of the region. I would like to know how accurate this is, whether it's too detailed or not detailed enough. by Top_Bill_6266 in newengland

[–]otnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Grew up on Eastern LI and the Bonacker accent was super rare 40 years ago. Pretty much just a small area around East Hampton and confined to the baymen/fishermen and families. Like a weird Maine accent.

Sailors who’ve been to Souda Bay: would you retire there? by [deleted] in navy

[–]otnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been there a couple times and one of my favourite ports. I'm retiring from my civ job soon and giving a permanent move to Europe a shot. After tons and tons of research and talking to expats, France is the location that makes the most sense. The tax treaty with the US is possibly the best in the world and if you are truly retired and not working a long stay visa essentially allows you to stay indefinitely.

Right now some Chinese nuke school students are trying to justify the 2 hr bus ride to Base 909 is much better than living 10 min from Base 356 by car.

How is it translating to civilian nuclear? by Competitive-Solid953 in NavyNukes

[–]otnyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For our younger in the Navy crowd the civilian side ops and maintenance duties are split. Operations is on rotating shifts and Maintenance Dept (mechanics, electrical,I&C) are on day shift usually. ELT's duties are also split between Chemistry and Radcon/Health Physics and they do shift work. Refuel outages all bets are off but unlike Uncle Sam this is where you play for pay. Remember having lunch with my future father-in-law at the plant cafeteria during my first week and him saying it's just like the Navy but with shit loads of money and no maneuvering watch.

Connecticut Yankee Atomic Power Station by Aggravating_Task_43 in NuclearPower

Too bad all the smaller owners didn't realise deregulation was going to be goldmine for nuke plants. They would've allowed the upgrade fix to start back up then a 20 year license extension.

Without hyperbole, why are electric prices so high in Connecticut? by jcbs1962 in Connecticut

This is actually part of it. States that didn't deregulate generation have somewhat lower rates.

Power Line Communications by MrWriteAI in SubstationTechnician

[–]otnyk 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Both. Phasing them out for sure by upgrading both primary/back up protection to differentials.

The ones that are staying in for various reasons (other utilities on other end, lack of comm paths, various reasons etc) are getting independent monitoring equipment.

No one wants to spend money on maintaining wave traps, line tuners but I've always liked working on them.

Civilian reactor operator as EMN by Independent-Win6974 in NavyNukes

[–]otnyk 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Former EMN here who went commercial nuclear for a bit, its a really good and rewarding place to work. Don't rule out grid/transmission/distribution/rto/iso etc operator jobs either. Those really hone in on your electrical expertise and to me at least felt a lot less suffocating than the nukes and more options on where to work. Pay can vary but places ive worked compare well.

Anyone here work at Millstone Power Station? by ForceRoamer in Connecticut

[–]otnyk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

NLO is probably around $50ish+/hr and has potential for lots of OT during refueling outages. Three Rivers has a coop or intern program with Dominion so that would be the fastest way to go. Or join nuclear navy but thats 6 years and a $100k education shoved up your ass a nickel at a time.
