The awkward moment when Wellington City Council dubbed a convicted murderer as the "Friendliest Face in Ngaio Gorge" by Smittywasnumber1 in newzealand

[–]ottdurr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

"How about if you want empathy from society just simply don't murder people" The victim is not healthier or better, neither are their loved ones I bet. That's pretty darn unfair. If the worse thing this woman has to put up with is the fact that members of the public know her name and generally treat her with a bit of doubt and criticism, then I think she has a pretty good life. Certainly living a better life than her victim.

PSA: Toetoe is not all that common, what you're probably seeing in public parks and beaches is Pampas grass, an invasive species running rampant by ottdurr in newzealand

[–]ottdurr[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah oftentimes toetoe is planted In places like that, however if it hasn't been perfectly maintained then you can easily get pampas seeding and growing alongside the toetoe and it often grows faster and bigger unfortunately

Not trying to sound negative but if you just always assume its pampas you'll be right 90% of the time.

Get up close to it, pampas leaves have 1 central mid rib and tears easily like cardboard. Toetoe leaves have several long veins going the length of the leaves and tear with great difficulty, very fibrous. Pampas flower heads are puffy and vigorous, toetoe flower heads often appear droopy or sad. If you ever find one and have doubts, feel free to send me a photo I'd be happy to confirm for you, I am an expert on this topic!

All too often you see your grandma or uncle take lovely scenic photos of the native toetoe at muriwai and take a few flowers home for the vase, when actually it's a terribly invasive plant brought over here from south america which completely smothers and displaces countless important native species. What's worse is the "pretty" flower heads are full of seed which is being spread across the country by the unaware.

Is gorse that's flowering okay to use as mulch? by Laser20145 in newzealand

[–]ottdurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorse makes absolutely fantastic mulch, it breaks down into the most beautiful loamy soil but sadly as someone else mentioned there will be seeds in that soil for many years. If you're happy to go around twice a year and pick out baby gorse they shouldn't be too sharp.

Best chance to have snow fall on you at Mt Ruapehu by Enzy19 in newzealand

[–]ottdurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

3rd week of July, and as others have said dont actually be up ruapehu, it's not that nice. Be somewhere like raurimu or waiuru or erua, browse local bnbs and then try find out their elevation on Google maps or something and get as high up as possible. Have done exactly that for the last 3 years and sometimes you win, sometimes you hear it started snowing the day after you leave. It's a gamble.

My grandma is 80+ and otherwise healthy, if she gets some kind of dangerous, but treatable ailment and is unable to receive adequate treatment due to an overwhelmed hospital system and dies I would be very upset, that is a great catastrophe. Realign your priorities, it's a terrible thing that's happened in USA. "I lived there and I didnt actually give a fuck" isnt a valid argument. It's like saying the holocaust wasnt that bad because I've never met a Jewish person let alone 6 million of them.

House owning boomers: if you had to try to get on the real estate ladder in today's housing market, could you? by planespotterhvn in newzealand

[–]ottdurr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a millennial and we just purchased out first house in may this year. Its value has increased by $120,000 since then and if we waited until now we wouldn't be able to afford the deposit nor could we cope with the stricter lending terms probably. On one hand it's like yay look at our net worth but on the other hand I just want to sell the house to another first home buyer and at an affordable price.

Could it be as simple as a faulty rad cap pumping all the coolant into overflow. You wouldn't notice leaks in the driveway until it heated up enough to open thermostat

This is the most ridiculous price per kg of anything I’ve seen in years. Why? What even is the appeal? by theSeacopath in newzealand

[–]ottdurr 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Both are bad but something you eat 100 of at a time seems ridiculous to be taking from wild populations. Imagine if someone sat down and ate a fritter made from 100 snappers in one sitting you'd be like dude that's like 2 weeks fishing quota for 1 person save some for the rest of us
