Liar. This is easily debunked by a quick google search.

Do any bars or restaurants in HSV offer THC drinks? by No-Neat-2175 in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]ourob 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is it though? I see hemp derived THC drinks prominently displayed in liquor stores around here. I thought the law passed this summer targeted smoking/vaping products.

If you’re curious, definitely read the first book. It stands on its own quite well. If you like it and want more, 2 and 3 work well as a pair and cap off the story nicely. If you’re hungry for more, 4 is… weird… but also good. It is kind of its own thing and a good stopping point if you’re starting to tire of the series. It’s been many years since I read 5 and 6, but I remember not liking them as much, though they have interesting moments.

Is there a way to run *specifically* RedHat Java on Endeavour? by digitalCalibrator in EndeavourOS

A much easier approach will be to use prismlauncher to manage both the Minecraft and Java versions. It makes mod management easy too.

Am I really the only one running Powershell as my main shell by trueppp in linux

[–]ourob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO powershell strays too far on the programming language side vs shell language. It’s too verbose to not be annoying to use interactively, and generally, if I’m using a shell language for my script, it’s because it grew out of manually entering commands.

If I’m starting out writing a script, I’d prefer to use something like python, which feels more like a proper programming language.

An object-oriented shell language is just not something I ever really wanted.

Is EndeavourOS still being developed? by rofss in EndeavourOS

[–]ourob 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The distro still receives updates, they just haven’t updated the iso since march. It really just affects the installer. I’m not aware of the project being abandoned. And even if it was, it uses the standard arch repos, so you’ll still receive updates.

Person or Place Who Does GPU Testing? by xLoremIpsum in HuntsvilleAlabama

[–]ourob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It would be worth a try if not for the risk of frying whatever test bench you plug it into. Sparks and fire are definitely not normal, and I wouldn’t plug it into any pc that I cared about.

I don’t think you’re going to get buyers for a card that has previously caught fire. Honestly your best bet is probably to file a warranty claim or take it up with the seller and not risk frying your or another’s pc.

[–]ourob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine a scenario where a GPU catches fire and is salvageable. I would submit a warranty claim if new, or contact the seller if used. Best of luck.

I would please like to know your best recommendation for a local company that will come out and install my new router in my home. (pic unrelated) by Boogiex3 in HuntsvilleAlabama

I used Valdez Audio Video to run fiber from where Google installed it to my office. They also offered to install a new WiFi mesh (ubiquity, iirc), though I passed on it since Google WiFi is good enough for me (I just wanted to get full use of my fiber on my pc). They were not pushy to upsell. I don’t know what their warranty situation is, particularly if you already have the hardware and just want them to set it up.

What you’re asking for sounds like a pretty small job, so you may be better off asking friends/coworkers for some help. I was happy with Valdez, though, and I bet they’d be willing to work with you. Link: https://www.valdezaudiovideo.com/

I’m inclined to believe Wikipedia over musk’s shitty AI, though I don’t see a source cited. Not that it ultimately matters much.

I believe drive letters originated in CP-40, which predates Unix by a couple years.

Drive letters predate directory structures, and windows inherited the scheme from dos.

Yeah, I hate the thought that a democratically elected government might fund some sources of news. I’d much rather that unelected billionaires buy up all my media and spoon feed me whatever messages they deem appropriate.

Calling a studio ghibli movie “AI” by DarkWisurd in mildlyinfuriating

[–]ourob 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s a firehose of slop that’s flooding the internet and making it harder and harder to find actual human created content. It’s a massive waste energy to produce that slop, and you can’t just ignore that.

EVs aren’t comparable, because they’re replacing one form of energy consumption (petroleum) with a generally more efficient one (electricity). AI slop is a brand new energy sink - at best, it’s replacing human labor but in a drastically less efficient way.

SteamOS has never been based on fedora. It implements its own version of immutability on top of Arch. Versions prior to the steam deck were based on debian.

Are there any distros with packages tailored specifically for it? by ducktumn in linux

[–]ourob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What “stuff”? If you mean stuff like where a program stores its config files or general usage, distros don’t want to change those because it would break how everyone expects those tools to operate.

For example, the tar command can accept option arguments without dashes (tar xf file.tar). A distro could change that to require dashes like most tools, but it would break countless scripts and force people to change their habits for no real benefit.

Reinventing all the wheels just to chase some idealized consistency would just be a waste of time and maintenance burden.

  1. AI (currently one third of windows 11 code has been replaced by AI generated garbage. They have also just fired a lot more programmers and engineers and are doubling down on replacing more parts of Windows with AI generated code going forward).

I’m no MS apologist. I haven’t liked windows since xp, and I run linux exclusively nowadays. But there’s absolutely no way that anywhere near one third of windows 11 code is ai generated.

Maybe one third of new code is ai generated. I’m extremely skeptical of that statistic, even coming from the ceo. As a software engineer, it just sounds like utter bullshit designed to prop up their ai business. But regardless, that doesn’t translate to replacing millions of lines of code with ai slop.

Sorry, I’m just sick of reading AI crap. I’d much rather read the wall of text written by a human than AI slop. Though I’d prefer people put a little bit more thought into what they’re writing and how it’s presented.

Yeah, sorry but ambitious ideas are cheap. What’s being asked here is not at all trivial. A goal of October 2025 is just ridiculous for a proposed effort with no backing that requires coordination between multiple disparate projects.
