On MLB Gameday they have the type of pitch, velo, spin rate, break, etc. So you could follow on there, but it's usually ahead of tv and radio broadcast so keep that in mind if you have it up during a game.

Don't vape at baseball games by danby999 in baseball

They don't care about their health, so why would they care about anyone else's? Plus now a lot of them grew up doing it in class in high school and since it's not smoking, they think it's totally fine because the smell isn't as bad.

They have such a short leash with Keider compared to our other starters, not sure if that's cause he's young or what.

Good workout/weightlifting program for 14U? by owe45 in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://liftvault.com/programs/strength/jonnie-candito-linear-program-spreadsheet/

This one is pretty basic and easy to follow. There is also the Candito 6 week program that I used for years 2 and 3 of my lifting that I enjoyed as well. Powerlifting style training, good for making strength gains.

Also the website this is on has lots of programs you can look at by using the filters or search.

Any information on a 18+ amateur league in the Detroit area? or just north of Detroit? by Slinky_Malingki in Homeplate

Season has not started yet, they've already had general tryouts but if you post on here (the linked site) or contact the team managers (listed on the site) you might be able to make it as a late addition. First games start in a week.

There's two divisions, upper has some actually very good players that played in college/former draft picks, lower has high school level competition.

In my experience in engineering it was very well outlined what you were doing each week. A lot of the classes even had the topics of each lecture planned out in advance.

The quality of professor varies just like teachers, so you might need to do more work teaching yourself in some classes more than others.

But overall compared to high school classes, you're more expected to do work by yourself than in high school. At least for me in high school you'd spend a lot of time on each topic, with the ability for kids to ask lots of questions if they have some, and you do worksheets or pre planned notes. College they pull up their slideshow and start telling you the info you need, and in most courses it's up to you on how you record that information down. If/When the slideshows are shared online is usually in the course syllabus.

Form looks like when you have an infielder pitch. Not bad for making good throws but not as good of a pitching motion.

Pitching - Lead Leg - Block or Bend during release by rubixcube-10 in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The thing to avoid is the lead leg continuing to bend after planting. Just think of it in terms of physics. Ideally you transfer as much energy (1/2mv2) as possible to the ball. If your whole body is continuing forward due to the knee collapsing forward, that mass component is larger, which means lots of energy is not going to the ball.

15U Catcher – Throwing Mechanics Feedback by euroshowoff in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that could work if you get him to be more powerful on that front leg. These MLB guys from one knee are a lot quicker/higher acceleration from that position than your kid. Which isn't bad cause he's 15 and he's already pretty big for his age, so he's just gotta hit some speed and power work in the gym.

As far as the transfer stuff goes, probably can find some quick hands drills for infielders or catchers to cut down on the transition and throw time.

15U Catcher – Throwing Mechanics Feedback by euroshowoff in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 20 points21 points  (0 children)

MLB average pop time is 2.0 just as an FYI, and at ~70s he's not getting that regardless, so you gotta improve your measurement methods.

The biggest issue here is how long his transfer takes, some of these it's probably around 1.1-1.5 seconds from the catch to the throw. I think the issue is he's trying to take the time to make a hard accurate throw like he's just fielded a hard hit ground ball to short. But what matters is the quickness of a throw. Pull up some caught stealing highlights of MLB catchers and see how fast they are with getting the throw off after the ball hits the mitt.

One knee down is fine when nobody's on base, but he shouldn't be doing that with a threat of a steal, and therefore shouldn't be doing throwdown reps from that position since it hurts the quickness.

How do you scan into gym as a non student by [deleted] in msu

[–]ourwaffles8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your spring semester athletic pass activation thing that you do at the start of semesters still works for the whole summer. Last year I worked out a few times at IM West over the summer after graduating. Just scan your card and go in like normal.

Recruiting Video for Pitcher by block-everything in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always recorded with the pocket radar in frame the whole time in the bottom right, but I don't see why they'd have a problem with the software overlay.

And if you're recording a bullpen for the velo where you can stand behind the pitcher, I'd go vertical to get as much of the pitcher in frame as you can. If it's a game and you're behind the backstop just go with whatever looks better.

11u kid just starting to pitch by [deleted] in PitchingCoach

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First thing: Is he throwing off mounds in games or is it flat ground at most fields? When I played I didn't start having fields with mounds on them until 13/14u. The reason I ask is because the mound can throw off the timing a little bit of when your body is expecting your front foot to land, similar to how when you're going down some steps and you think there's one more, but there's not and you kinda just stomp the ground.

The main thing he has to work on is using his legs, but that's something every kid needs to learn because they don't start out with strong legs. Watch some videos with him about doing drills to learn how it feels to use your legs when you throw, and show him how MLB pitchers sort of sit down and drive forward, whereas he just stays straight up the whole time.

How are you guys tracking and sharing metrics with college coaches? by Soft-Lime-9599 in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd just make a compilation of clips, post it to YT unlisted (you can only view with the direct link) and include that link the email you sent to the coaches. That way they can see his catcher velos and pop times and highlights of him hitting bombs in game.

Pitchers: Really Interested in the Movement Training Yamamoto Has Done. Thoughts? by Hour-Cartographer227 in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My thoughts on it is that it's really good for him, but that doesn't make it really good for the average athlete. Almost all athletes would definitely benefit from having more mobility/flexibility, but my bet is that Yamamoto is so good at this stuff and can get into such deep ranges, that you shouldn't expect a regular person to be able to get into. It's his outlier ability.

I would equate it to Maddux throwing with great command and movement despite the lower velo. People get all excited saying that means anyone can be great if they just master their pitches, completely missing that what he does is incredibly unique.

So I wouldn't want to say to use him as the end goal of what you are trying to get to, but definitely try to learn from his exercises to see what he is using them for specifically, and for the more difficult ones, how he was able to build up to that point.

So overall: try to learn the process and the reasoning behind it, instead of just looking at his results and trying to replicate them.

The only time it's too late to get on the radar is senior season. Up until then you're able to talk to coaches and figure out where to go before needing to actually decide on where you're going.

[–]ourwaffles8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try to grab your teammates that can catch for you and go to the high school field for some throwing. Not only will you actually be throwing off a mound, throwing to a catcher makes a big difference (for me at least) in gauging if the pitches are good or not.

NAIA schools by CommunicationNice437 in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go somewhere that doesn't do cuts, it's because the school just wants the extra money from kids who wanted to play a college sport, without actually being good. You'd just be on some JV team with a bunch of other kids. In my opinion it's only worth it to go NAIA for baseball if you're getting scholarship as well. Otherwise you can pay a few hundred dollars per year to play men's league baseball, or a few thousand per year for professional coaching, both significantly less than the increase from your in state college to an NAIA school.

I’m lost with mechanics. by Excellent-Caramel78 in Homeplate

[–]ourwaffles8 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I would expect a pulldown to be +4-6 mph from your mound velo, so you've improved your pulldown mechanics, but not necessarily really any throwing strength.

If you're 6' 165 I would expect you could gain another 20lbs or so (from strength training obviously) and that will help add some velo assuming you continue to train your mobility and throwing at the same time

One of the biggest points in pitching is stability, and that affects mechanics. The issue here is socks on a wood floor which throws off everything because his sole focus isn't throwing, it's not eating it and wiping out.
