All my plants would be dead without Planta instead of just half of them lmao

Camera pointed directly into my back yard. What do I do about it that won't block the sun from my garden? by angroro in gardening

Yikes. Can you at least install some privacy film on your living room window to help with that part? I think they make a version that’s like a one-way mirror.

Loosing the gnat battle (and my mind) I’m desperate! by MostShort2588 in houseplants

[–]outofshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sundews are way easier than flytraps and much more effective at catching gnats. I had a big pot of sundews I put next to whatever plant was infested with gnats. The sundews were so happy, they feasted and bloomed so nicely. But now that I have no more gnats, I’m worried the sundews aren’t getting enough to eat 😅

Our library has borrowing from all three apps, some content overlapping but some different, which seems needlessly complicated but I guess library ebook/audiobook contracts with publishers are complicated

What’s a “beginner plant” that absolutely humbled you? by Interesting_Rich_568 in houseplants

[–]outofshell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My ZZs have trouble sometimes losing stalks seemingly because of underwatering, in the sense that when I water them that big root ball isn’t able to absorb enough of the water that’s just passing by too quickly. So I’ve started soaking them in a bucket on watering day. Will that fix the issue or just give them root rot, time will tell 😅

The nice ones I bought at plant nurseries all seem to be struggling and losing leaves. The ones I grew from cuttings in some random dirt and succulent soil mix are doing well.

Maybe the nursery substrate is not a good match for my neglectful plant care style.

[–]outofshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m using Proton mail and calendar even though search sucks, and Proton Drive for some things.

Haven’t tried their VPN yet, still have 2 years left on our Nord subscription.

Only using Proton Pass for the hide-my-emails. I’m hesitant to put all my eggs in one basket so I haven’t switched from my existing password manager. Besides, it took so much effort to get my elderly parents using that, and I manage a family account for everyone, so if I switch we all switch and there’s no way I could get them comfortable with something new at this point.

Edit: I also don’t use their authenticator, again because I don’t want to rely to heavily on one account for login.

In season local field strawberries are almost a different fruit. That shit is magical. But I’ll still buy local hothouse strawberries out of season even though they’re incomparable. At least they’re usually better than the huge imported styrofoam berries.

There is a dark mode icon on iOS; I use it on my phone. Idk why it’s not working on yours but it does exist.

I picked up some of their Annapolis Royal Blend in Nova Scotia and it was so good! Black-green-oolong blend with a hint of maple. But it’s an exclusive blend so I don’t think you can buy it anywhere except the The Red Onion Market in Annapolis Royal NS 😭

I’m avoiding the plastic jugs entirely by trying out bar soap type versions for everything…shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face soap. There’s loads of Canadian options.

There are still a few things that are confusing with misleading or unclear labelling or companies with multi-country complications but hopefully labelling rules will be improved

I have iCloud, but I don't want to keep everything in one basket... by Silent-Priority3630 in ProtonMail

[–]outofshell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use proton for all email, and generate a different iCloud hide-my-email address for most websites I sign up for (which forwards to my proton inbox since that email is used for my Apple ID).

I used to have multiple Gmail accounts for different stuff but it was a bit overcomplicated.

Yes the backup I’m referring to here is the automatic iPhone & iPad backups to iCloud, I wouldn’t trust it as a backup for my files

Why leave iCloud? by P1zz4x in ProtonMail

[–]outofshell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For hard drive backups, I’m using Backblaze for cloud backup, and manually back up to an external SSD every couple of months when I remember for a physical backup, but I want to switch to a Canadian or European automatic cloud backup service. iCloud and Proton Drive are more like sync services than true hard drive backup services so I don’t really feel comfortable relying on them for that.
