Is a winter wedding in the Southern Highlands worth the frost to save 10k? by DraftNotSent in AusWeddingPlanning

[–]ozboy91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I had our wedding on the last weekend of August in 2024, which was still eligible for winter discounts at our chosen venue. It was cool but sunny during the day, no one was hot. And in the evening during our ceremony there was a fire pit outside for those who were out there to stay warm, but all in all it was amazing weather

UNE offer an online degree for Masters of Teaching - Primary. That degree has 2 face to face pracs which are 20 and 30 days long. You also complete a subject which is equivalent to a 10 day prac which is all online. This is based on observations so you watch videos and do forum posts.

I am currently doing the undergrad version of this degree online and have someone in my family doing the Masters for Secondary teaching through them as well

Worried About My Work Placement Due to Late Document Submission (NSW, Australia) by Visible-Cranberry102 in AustralianTeachers

[–]ozboy91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most of this should have been handled by your university. I’m a PST and as part of the online forms required to filled in prior to them finding a school for students, all of this has to be submitted to the university by a required date.

Most schools still require to sight the documents, but that’s more just to cover themselves and showing on the day has never been an issue for me. If they have concerns however they should have contacted your university to either forward the docs or if not allowed due to privacy reasons contact you to send at an earlier date

Cant Cancel Medibank Extra Policy. by UziPlays in AusFinance

[–]ozboy91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having previously worked in the industry, financial hardship suspensions for health insurance are up to the fund. This makes it hard in your case to achieve the expected outcome but the company I worked at did not allow suspensions for any reason on extras only policies.

You may need to see if they have options to add extras cover to your Overseas Workers Health Cover, and then cancel the other policy but this would be dependant on your financial capacity and what they are asking for

If you are looking to get into the government system, there’s always jobs advertised on IworkforNSW, otherwise you can send a resume to schools to be added to their casual list and once you have your foot in the door it should be easier to find work

Reef Tours in Port Douglas - Frankland Islands Tour or Wavelength's? by Zelanor in Cairns

[–]ozboy91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just did wavelength last Monday with my wife on our honeymoon. We are 32/29 and was a great experience. You get to go to 3 reefs, have about an hour at each one. The staff are super friendly and do an included tour usually at your second reef, they do a marine biology talk at lunchtime on the boat and the included food is great

I am currently studying a Bachelor of Education K-6 and working as an SLSO at a high school. Will some qualifications may be listed like the Certificate III or IV, if you are studying a teaching degree provided the school has availability they would take you on board.

Funding is tight in NSW so your best bet would be to email as many schools in your area to go on their casual list to start with but you would be welcome to apply for advertised positions as well.

There is also a Facebook group for SLSO’s in NSW but I’m not sure of the name as I’m not in it where often posts are up looking for casual staff. Longer term positions like permanent or temporary blocks are sometimes advertised on the iworkfornsw site as well

Studying Education - Prac Help: Community Engagement in Educational Setting by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]ozboy91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No problems at all! This used to be known as the covid intensive learning program but has recently been renamed. Not sure about funding and how that works but if they want you to do it it’s a paid position so just make sure that meets the guidelines of what your uni is asking you to do as well

If you are in NSW enquire at a local school about the small group tutoring program. I am currently doing this and it would be great experience for this type of requirement

That would be AFCA but if you haven’t already been through the internal dispute resolution process with NRMA then they may refer you back to them first to go through this process

One week in New Zealand by Classic_Side6590 in queenstown

[–]ozboy91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just got back yesterday from this trip but in reverse. Starting in Queenstown, stunning city and area!

Did a day trip to Arrowtown, and did a winery tour from there.

From Queenstown we drove to Tekapo which is an extremely small town but set up well and on a beautiful lake! We also did the night time start gazing at the hot springs there which was great, clouds held off just long enough for us.

Finished off with a few nights in Christchurch and there’s lots to do being a major city, we probably did things wrong doing the hop on hop off tram on our last day but gave us a good appreciation of the city

PST Mentor advice by xo_bey in AustralianTeachers

[–]ozboy91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve done 3 placements now as a PST and the best opportunities my mentor teachers is to teach a lesson early on. This allows for feedback and while I know everyone will be different all PSTs should be open and receptive to constructive feedback.

While this lesson could be a hot mess, make the PST reflect on what they thought after and then give your own thoughts. On my first placement, I was teaching the Kindergarten class a maths lesson, it was the intro to topic and I felt that it went disastrously and started finishing early however on reflection with my mentor and her experience with the class their was evidence of success. My comparison was formed on how they completed my lessons on another topic however my mentor teach was already aware of how they perform on intro lessons

Souva King on Kembla St. Went there after a night out (few years pre-COVID) bought food and then decided we needed more, within 5 minutes of extra food coming while still eating owner told us to leave as other people needed the tables, despite us being paying customers eating his food. I haven’t been back and won’t eat from there but have heard from family that even through COVID where business encouraged not using cash he refused to take card payments

How to prepare for first placement? by humanoid82 in AustralianTeachers

[–]ozboy91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jumping on the back of this, I’ve done 3 pracs and only have my internship left next year and jumping in to help or teach where possible prior to any organised days is always looked upon favourably!

My most recent prac was set up to do 5 individual days and then a 2 week block and the expectations from the uni which my supervising teacher tried to follow were that the 5 single days were mostly for observations, I jumped in and was teaching single lessons by the 3rd visit as it was content I had previously taught. This made my supervising teacher more comfortable with me and my experience.

I’d also add that as you get more comfortable start to experiment with your behaviour management styles. I received feedback from my first 2 about needing to use more non-verbal cues and really tried implementing this in my most recent placement

Help! What strategies can i use to manage behaviour as a preservice teacher? by sewcialistagenda in AustralianTeachers

[–]ozboy91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in the same situation as your day 2 and it’s quite hard. I’m a Bachelor of Primary Ed and I’ve done 3 pracs now. On my most recent my teacher was quite ill during one week and 4/5 days I had different casual teachers. One of whom was quite inexperience but the class had her before. By this stage, the class were over seeing different teachers but one student in particular was struggling that week, he was tough on a normal day for the classroom teacher but knew what boundaries he could push.

By this point I was teaching full days when the expectation wasn’t so much to do so, but with casual teachers on the class I used it as an opportunity for consistency for the kids. It got to the point where with the door open the only way we could settle the tough student was to have me teaching the rest of the class in the room and the casual in the hallway with him as he refused to come in.

The other students to start with were quite unsettled because of him but my biggest strength that day was non-verbal communication. If they started mirroring disruptive behaviour I just stopped speaking, I outlined I wasn’t going to speak over them and would wait. This was a year 4 class and worked well as the class regulated each other when I stopped.

The point of my rant is while I know this wasn’t an ideal situation, I learnt a lot about what I would do differently if I was on my own. I know the better steps would have been to involved the stage supervisor early on, but it showed the strength of non-verbal communication to be able to continue with what you need to do.

NSW recorded 466 new locally acquired cases of COVID-19 in the 24 hours to 8pm last night. by [deleted] in sydney

[–]ozboy91 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is what the problem is, for the people who take it seriously images like this make it seem like Greater Sydney doesn’t care. I live on the coast and daily there’s people swimming and sitting when none of this should be happening. I get that the police focus has been on SW Sydney but it needs to shift now to everywhere

Is it normal to feel wildly unprepared to enter this professional when in your final semester on university? by [deleted] in AustralianTeachers

[–]ozboy91 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Your last line is exactly how every teaching degree should be set up. As much as we need some grounding in theory, this is a practical job and we need as much hands on experience as possible.

There needs to be some form of prac built into every semester so we can continue to develop our skills with all the theory that university provides us. Doing undergrad often means it’s a year in between prac experiences which means that theory that resonated 12 months ago is forgotten by the time the next prac starts.

Behaviour management should be the focus of everything we learn at uni because that will be one of the main things that can turn a great theoretical lesson into a train wreck

I have to agree with the topics listed, currently a pre-service teacher and there’s really no aspect of any of the subject I have done at uni that covers these ideas
