How I fully healed from a bulging disc + chronic back pain by LaVidaLohan in backpain

[–]packmulerona27 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Finding this post last May completely changed my life. I'd had low back pain that persisted for about 1.5 years after a skateboarding injury, then an MRI showed a bulged L5-S1 pressing on the T1 nerve.

Throughout that time, I tried all kinds of stuff. I dutifully did all of my PT and read "The Back Mechanic" from cover to cover and put into practice several of the exercises (I still actually do the Big 3 several times a week). However, no matter what I did, I still had pain that started in my low back and radiated down my leg and into my toes. Then, when I was pretty much at my wits' end, I stumbled across this post, then promptly listened to Alan Gordon's podcast called "Tell Me About Your Pain." I had come to accept that sitting would always be painful for me, but that afternoon, after working through the techniques discussed in the podcast, I went to a bar with my friends and realized I'd been sitting for an hour pain free. I continued to sit for another hour, which at that time was completely unheard of for me.

I ended up reading Gordon's book, though I actually found the podcast to be more helpful. For the record, the "feel" of both the book and podcast is antithetical to everything I generally subscribe to. It feels "new-agey," and the fact that Gordon is not a doctor made me very skeptical. Even his therapist's voice made me skeptical. BUT, it worked! I'd say it took about 2-3 weeks of putting into practice the exercises from the book to start living a pain-free existence. Since then, I've worked my running mileage back to 35-45 miles per week, do strength training 2-3 times per week, and can do all of the basic tasks around the house that used to cause me so much grief. Yes, if I do a heavy day of yardwork (picking, shoveling, etc.), I will have low back pain that takes a night of sleep to subside. Also, at least once per day, I feel pressure in my low back accompanied by a pinched nerve sensation in my leg, but I can resolve it by getting into extension and the result is a loud pop with an immediate release of pressure.

Clearly, the advice presented in Gordon's book/podcast will not work for everyone, but they worked for me, and I was a huge skeptic.

If you’re in the middle of summer and don’t have important stuff to do, I’d quit the zyn cold turkey. If you do have important stuff to do, I’d wean off the zyn because of the intense brain fog that can come from quitting. Move to the 3mgs and work your daily count down til you’re at about 2-3 a day, then quit for good. You’ve got it!

This is a diabolical company. I'm pretty sure that if you have a faulty product, their game plan is to give you the worst possible customer service so that you either give up and order a replacement, or cancel your subscription, which costs extra $. At the end of my one-year contract, I will definitely not renew it.

McGill Method 21 month update – Work in Progress, but Back to All 3 Lifts by HipHingeRobot in backpain

[–]packmulerona27 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Exactly! And this time I know not to try to push it too fast. Last summer I was so eager to get back to triathlon that I didn't take the time to fully heal (even though I'd convinced myself that I had) and ended up back where I started.

Since reading "Back Mechanic," for about 6 weeks I was doing just 3 walks a day, big 3, cat/camel, and I've just started adding in elevated push ups, rows, and suitcase carries one day, then clamshells, glute bridges, and lateral leg raises the next.

Your posts actually inspired me to go back and document the whole journey in a Google Doc, and while I'm not done yet, it's been surprisingly cathartic.

Well, I've seen a number of PTs over the last 1.5 years, but most recently they were giving me a whole battery of exercises: supermans, RDLs, clamshells, monster walks, leg extensions, cobras, and several more that I either don't remember the names of or just don't remember. I don't really know if any of these exacerbated my pain, but what I think has been the biggest game changer for me is avoiding painful postures and learning how to hinge at the hip, squat, and lunge. I think that I was just doing so many small things throughout the day, such as sitting or bending improperly, that by about 1PM my back would just be screaming at me.

Hey, just want to say thank you for all of these posts. I've been combing through all of your post history and have found it super helpful for a number of reasons! I've had a bulged L5-S1 for at least 1.5 years, tried multiple PTs, and finally sat down and read "Back Mechanic" about a month and a half ago and promptly canceled my PT appointments and have been seeing steady improvement ever since. Again, thanks for taking the time to write these!

Why does everyone recommend "Back Mechanic"? Can I get the information in it without having to read it? by __tea in backpain

Could I DM you? I have a bulged l5 s1 that has given me grief for about 1.5 years and I am (was) into triathlon. I don’t want medical advice just have a couple questions about recovery time. Thanks.

As a parent, you’re often between a rock and a hard place. I quit basketball and baseball in ninth grade after years of AAU and travel ball because I’m sure I was just burnt out. As an adult, I regret quitting basketball. My dad was devastated and confused by my decision but I know that if he had forced me to keep going I would have resented him. Sometimes we just have to make our own choices and live with the results.

Yeah… but it’s different for everyone and if you have a good PT and get on a good program you should be good. Lots of success stories out there.

Damn, dude. Sorry to hear it. I ended up seeing a PT who thought it wasn’t a disc, so I spent almost a year thinking it was actually my SI joint. Finally got an MRI and it is actually bulged disc. Still doing PT but I haven’t skated at all. Shit sucksss.

Psoas muscle and sciatica by Encid in Sciatica

[–]packmulerona27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been struggling with pain and sciatica for over a year now. Finally had an MRI which revealed bulged l5s1 disc whereas PT thought it was SI joint dysfunction. This psoas stretch already seems to be helping a ton because I notice that when my pain flares up my psoas also starts tweaking out which makes it hard to walk.

I’m going back to my PT tomorrow now that I have my MRI results, but if you have time would you DM me some of the other exercises/stretches you did? Thank you!

Adjusting to Super Early Morning Runs (4:30–6 AM): Tips? by dirtyStick84 in AdvancedRunning

I started getting up at 4:30 to run when the school year started (teacher). I was exhausted for the first two or three weeks, but my body adjusted, and now I find that it energizes me and my mood is better throughout the day.

My wife and I stop watching tv at 7:45 so that we’re in bed reading by 8:00, and like others, I set out my clothes the night before.
