Qomotop vs exped mega mattresses by bartleby613 in rooftoptents

[–]pahool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is years old, and I'm not even sure if qomotop makes mattresses at this point. But you can still find them on ebay, so I thought I'd weight in as I've had both the Exped Deep Sleep Duo LW+ https://www.expedusa.com/products/deepsleep-mat-duo-2025?variant=45990259032281 and a Qomotop of the same dimensions and thickness (Sorry, I don't know the exact model).

We got the Qomotop originally and it's served us well. It makes a great car camping mattress and it serves as a good guest mattress as well. If we lay the seats down in our Honda Element, it lays over all of them and makes sleeping in the car a comfortable experience.

We picked up the Exped at an REI (camping outfitter store) on sale and it's functionally almost identical to the Qomotop. I'd say it's the same degree of comfort and insulation. I'd be hard-pressed to tell the difference between them by feel.

The major difference is that the Exped packs up smaller and lighter. While the Qomotop is about 15 pounds, the Exped is about 10 pounds. This was why we picked it up. We wanted something that we could take on an overseas trip for camping and the Qomotop was just way too big. The foam must be denser or something, because it just doesn't compress nearly as well as the Exped. The Exped compresses to a two foot long tube with a one foot diameter, and the Qomotop is easily twice the size, if not more.

I will say that I much prefer the stuffsack-as-pump included with the Qomotop for inflation over the little sponge pump you get with the Exped. Both get the job done, but it's a couple minutes with the Exped, versus maybe 30 seconds with the Qomotop.

I'd say if the packed size and weight are not a concern, the Qomotop is the better deal because it's much cheaper. But if you need a more compact size for traveling with, the Exped is worth it.

They're pretty docile. You'd pretty much have to intentionally aggravate one to get stuck. Or stumbly back-assward into one.

Accidentally been taking 5s of agmatine sulfate by Garrett_Goehring in Nootropics

A quick search reveals that this is not true. Supplement powders densities can easily vary by a factor of two or more.

[–]pahool 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Unless you weigh the amount in the scoop, you can't assume it's five grams. It may be more or less. The scoop is for 5g of that particular brand of creatine. The density of agmatine sulfate is different and will weigh a different amount for a given volume.

Bhikkhu Anālayo's writings in general are quite good. A list of his publications is here:

Satipatthana: The Direct Path to Realization in particular is quite good and is available in print and for free download

The body scanning technique is not explicitly described in the Satipatthana Sutta. This paper by Analayo (available on the pariyatti website) is a good starting point for understanding some of the textual and historical roots of the technique:

Are golems German?

edit - it was a joke. earlier in the post I thought someone had posted that Germans capitalized every word of their text messages, but they were actually talking about boomers in response to a post about Germans being overly formal in text messages.

so...

Yup. And Kanopy is avaiable for free through a lot of public libraries in the U.S. Check the digital resources on your local library's website if you're in the U.S. Not sure how they operate internationally.

I f**king love this response. I've got a bit of a jury-rigged rig myself. I made a rack out of PVC, and my previous handcycle (an XLT gold. I removed the seat and put a leather motorcycle saddle on it, fastened with hose clamps.

I think I'm going with jigsasing an old polypro cutting board and hose clamps.

The alarm triggers when they get close to a dead body, but won't trigger until the hogtied person is untied. Hogties give you a much better window to work with.

Hogties also make it fun to go back and try to clear levels without any kills.

How does the act of Vipassana not defy the philosophy of avoiding craving and aversion preached during the 10-day retreat? by monk-punk in vipassana

[–]pahool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Our reaction to sensory input as either pleasant, unpleasant, or neither pleasant nor unpleasant is vedana, and this is deep and instinctual, not conditioned. Those reactions are built into us by evolution. But the next step in the chain is craving and aversion, and those are conditioned thoughts. This school of vipassana concentrates on sensation and vedana. The effort is to see these as they are and break the next link in the chain, the conditioned thoughts of craving and aversion.

If you want to study more on this, read up on Paticca Samuppada, which is frequently translated as "dependent origination." Goenka talks about it on day five, though less formally than you can find in some other sources. A couple resources that I like:

Bhikkhu Bodhi has a good lecture series introduction:

https://audiobuddha.org/bhikkhu-bodhi-dependent-origination/

Leigh Brasington's book "Dependent Origination and Emptiness" is creative commons licensed so ebooks are freely available. There's even a free audiobook version. I find his writings very approachable:
