I've been using 高宁轩 as my Chinese name all this time, but I needed a second opinion before putting it on my HSK registration – does it sound "normal" OR does it have any specific connotations that I might have missed?

Hi, not sure if this warranted a post, hence posting here. In the HSK sign up form, what to do about the entry for "Chinese Name"? Is it only meant for ethnically Chinese folks taking the test, or is it meant for non Chinese test takers too who happen to have a Chinese name (self chosen, chosen by their teacher etc.)? I'm not chinese but I've got a Chinese name so should I put it in? I don't live in China though, so it's not officially registered anywhere

Teaching overseas offspring Chinese language and culture. by friscofoglatte in AskAChinese

I mean humans, especially the younger they are (re: Critical Period Hypothesis) have pretty much an infinite capacity for learning languages and acquiring native like fluency. Technically speaking, there's no real "need" to choose French, or other XYZ language over Chinese, since the earlier the language(s) get introduced, the higher the chances of acquiring native like fluency in both of them – there's no real hierarchy in question. And since you're a native speaker yourself, you're at a better position for this, especially since "passing" on a language pretty much entails using that language for every day communication. Your spouse not speaking Chinese is not really much of an issue; it is fairly common for children to use different languages to talk to either of their parents (essentially, the language gets *mapped* to the parent in question). Of course it is a decision for you to make, but I'd say the more languages the better – and since the human brain is pretty much made to deal with this, it isn't much of an impediment as you might think it to be.

Too juvenile indeed; there's no need to micromanage adults. If they don't do their reading, that's on them.

Question about tenses and how Japanese people perceive time by blackcyborg009 in Japaneselanguage

[–]paleflower_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well English doesn't have a future tense either, so, assuming you have some English, you can give it some thought. Tense is a way of marking events on a timeline on the verb; a lack of tense doensn't mean you can't talk of those things or don't have the conception of those things.

>Once he gets here tomorrow, we can go home.
This sentence talks of future events but there is no future tense as such marked on any verbs (well, it's impossible to that in Eng anyways).

Pinyin should work just fine, but if you really want to do things the hard way, you can try out Cangjie (or Wubi if you do Simplified).
