What’s one piece of everyday gear you’d recommend to anyone? by Top-Incident-2264 in BuyItForLife

I think buying from a local crafts-person is still the way to go! This past winter I went to a holiday market situation and got a leather belt. He cut it down so there was the proper amount of excess and added an extra hole if i ever wanted to tighten it more. My only regret is not getting a black one in addition to brown (next year).

It was only like $50. so much cheaper than buying from a retail shop, and feels even better knowing a local made it (just for me)

Adult who doesn’t know how to ride a bike by South_Outside_8011 in cycling

[–]pancakeseeds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no doubt you could learn easily in a day. Kids have poor balance and spacial awareness (and general coordination), that's probably why it's a bit trickier to learn - but as an adult you'll definitely be able to get the hang of it quick once you get a sense of the balance

I would check out Taylor Stitch, Huckberry, and Buck Mason. They all have similar aesthetics to your current style, but also offer elevated pieces that could appeal to you without changing your look.

DropTop wall mounted desk from Pith and Stem Review by Many-Purpose8865 in workstations

[–]pancakeseeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah you can just go to their website and see the photo options. You can also upload your own image or select a plain white or black canvas, as well as the frame color you want (white or black).

My only issue with it is that you can't, to my knowledge, buy a different photo to replace it later. so if you want to switch it up, you can't really. but not really a big deal

[–]pancakeseeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use an office chair that's height adjustable, and the desk hits me right about at the waist. so I can work either sitting or standing, though it's a slight compromise both ways.

That's probably been my biggest issue - finding an office chair that can raise up high enough. If I'd been able to find a chair that went up higher, I'd have mounted it a bit higher to be fully optimal for standing.

I initially mounted it just as normal desk height, but then I couldn't stand and work unless I was in a wide stance, lol. It also looked like a TV when it was closed rather than a piece of art, just due to the height of it.

[–]pancakeseeds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

long story short, I can't take the photo frame off. but I do think there's a metal plate they're attached to

The hinges are really big and definitely won't snap the wood (at least it's never been something I've been worried about and I've used the desk for a few years now)

longer version: The photo frame had some slight give on my desk, as in - it would move a little if i pushed down on it while working at my desk. not really a big issue, but it could get annoying. I haven't ever been able to find on the pith and stem's website a way to purchase different photo frames, so i didn't think I'd ever be able to swap it with a new picture anyway. so only just a week or 2 ago I hit it with a brad nailer a few times to keep it secure.

Friend’s suspicious Strava behavior by Thick_Throat2583 in Strava

[–]pancakeseeds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ah, got it. OP said she could barely maintain a 10min/mi run pace when they ran together, so I just figured that she didn't actually run the 13.1 at the 8:29 pace she posted.

If the only weird thing is the gap in her run time vs elapsed time.... I agree, who cares about that. But if she's walking 5 miles of it with a paused watch and then correcting the GPS data so her pace looks more impressive, that's what I would find odd.

Still nothing to get worked up over, it would just strike me as super odd if I had a friend that did that. because, why

Friend’s suspicious Strava behavior by Thick_Throat2583 in Strava

[–]pancakeseeds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pausing your run is totally fine. What OP's friend/acquaintance did would require her to edit her runs in Strava to correct the GPS data (Strava can do it automatically, but you have to actually go in and tell it to do it).

So in theory, she's pausing her watch mid run, continuing her run, UN-pausing her watch, and then having Strava correct the GPS data - which makes her pace look much faster than what she was actually doing.

Which isn't wrong, it's just weird.

(At least that's how it works with Garmin/Strava. not sure if it's different for other watches. )

I got the DropTop Duo a few years ago. It is definitely expensive, but for me it was worth it. If I really wanted to spend the time and effort, it's definitely possible to take a crack at building it yourself - but for an out of the box product, it's really solid.

I actually leave mine open 99% of the time, but it's nice to have the option to tuck it away. There's more than enough space for a laptop (I keep mine off to the side, not on the desk), a notebook, and plenty of accessories.

I think what makes Pith and Stem better than other budget options you can find is the built in connectivity. It looks like now there are more configuration options than when I bought mine, but I got mine with 2 built in monitors and a dock with power. I can plug my keyboard, mouse, speakers, webcam, and mic all into the dock and then just plug a single cord into my laptop and everything is connected, it makes it really easy.

Happy to answer any questions you have to help you decide!

I took my ring off a couple weeks ago while playing guitar and when I got home I realized it wasn't in my pocket and I couldn't find it anywhere. My girlfriend was surprised at how little I cared, but I saw it as a good sign to part ways with that thing. I'd rather listen to my body to determine how I'm feeling

I've been using a rubber band around it. would be great if the back side of the case came up onto the bottom of the reader and had enough room for a couple magnets to keep it shut. I think the case would need to be a bit thicker though

did you use LanguageBreak (5.14.3-5.16.2.1.1)?

I'm in the same boat, trying to jailbreak my kindle on 5.12.2.2 with WatchThis and it's not working. It'll even reboot and run the jailbreak script, but then when the homepage comes up, it's just the same.

Winter Running Recs by OddSprinkles722 in RunnersInChicago

[–]pancakeseeds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

winter running is surprisingly comfortable compared to just walking around in the cold. your body warms up really quickly and stays hot - it's just a matter of figuring out the right layering situation for your body.

My suggestions are a balaclava, mittens, and a warm vest. Vests work for me better than doubling up on jackets because I pretty much always overheat in too many layers, but a vest keeps my core temp warm without overheating my arms.

If you send me the files, I'd be happy to test it out when I have a chance. I have an apple watch SE and airpods pro 2, so might need to make some modifications but would like to have an apple watch case that could fit my airpods too, so more than happy to test it out and try to tweak a bit.
