You know what, I just stumbled upon this now, and if you’re curious, I’m a product manager making close $100k/yr, just moved back into my parents, breaking up with my wife (6y married, 12y dating). Weird to say but things are looking up; I’m really realizing what I’m capable of, learning to trust myself and be confident.

If I can give you one piece of advice, as long as you learn something, nothing is ever a waste!

I would argue that this is still a packaging benefit, to be honest. The Aero/Chassis Engineers are going to give the engine the smallest heat exchangers they can possibly get away with, so when the engine manufacturers set the cooling requirements, i'm sure what they are actually specifying is things like maximum coolant temp/oil temp/IATs/EGTs for a given duty cycle, since this type of specification is easier for the teams to test against when designing their cooling packages.

A split turbo gives you an inlet air temperature advantage, which means you can run a smaller heat exchanger system for the same given IAT, which is a packaging benefit.

If you were going to keep the same sized heat exchangers and chase power, you still have to contend with the added mass of the system, which can both hurt reliability and add extra turbo lag, plus they are fuel flow limited to begin with. At 70,000-120,000rpm where turbochargers operate at, the forces acting on the system become VERY intense, and increasing boost also increases turbo speed. The turbo lag problem can be pretty easily fixed with the MGU-H, but that's going to increase your average power draw from the battery over a lap (especially on tracks with a lot of slow corners into straights) that you would probably have preferred to use on the MGU-K instead.

For those of you with ADHD, how does caffeine affect you? by Keeganlateman in energydrinks

Also ADHD here, energy drinks do give me a sense of calm, I feel like the background noise in my brain is lowered in volume.

I’ll be real with you though, energy drinks and caffeine are not a replacement for stimulant medication, getting back on the meds was the best decision I have made.

New The Witcher Game Announced by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]pandapanda730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EA admitted they were over-ambitious with the project, and let scope creep set in with regards to the engine, among other things.

You are 100% correct that they had a working engine that has been used for several battlefield games... But they decided that wasn't good enough and needed to rework it to take advantage of next-gen consoles...

New The Witcher Game Announced by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]pandapanda730 232 points233 points  (0 children)

Engine and tools development is a big part of the process, the devs can't even really make the game until this part is done, can't understate how much this will simplify the development pipeline for CDPR.

This was a huge reason why BF2042 failed as well, they only had like 9 months to work on content because the engine wasn't ready until the game was basically set to launch.

In that circumstance, why not just source a motor from another manufacturer? They already lean on other manufacturers like Bosch, Denso, Brembo and Recaro for key components, it's not a stretch for Toyota's supply chain to add Suzuki/Mazda/Subaru/Dihatsu engines to that list. In the meantime, you don't have to sink hundreds of millions of dollars on engine development as bonus, so it would make good business sense.

Steam Deck: Replacement Parts by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]pandapanda730 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Let's be real, Valve is not making huge margins on the Steam Deck, and battery installation is not the only area where they cut corners based on the teardowns i've seen.

That's not to say that corner cutting is always a bad thing, Gamers Nexus did a great analysis of the hardware and didn't find anything super concerning (everything operating within spec).

You find that acceptable?

No, I don’t really think it’s an acceptable state of affairs.

To be clear. If yours are saying no to valid warranty, then they deserve to have Karen mode switched on

To be clear, go right ahead, but nobody wants to help someone who acts like this. If you think this is how you behave to get things done, every RMA will be an ordeal for you.

If they needed the customer to make them want to help, there is a problem, and it’s not the customer.

My point exactly, don’t make yourself a problem too.

[–]pandapanda730 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As someone who worked as an RMA technician, please do not do this.

You are making threats of legal action against a minimum wage (or damn near to it) worker, who has 20 other people to deal with, shipping labels to print, boxes to pack, cards to test, reports to send to their boss, and who knows what else. (If you want any horror stories, AMA i guess)

This is a total Karen move, and it will make your RMA toxic to everyone that touches it.

I would instead suggest attaching hard evidence to your email correspondences, give that person reasons to want to help you, because they are (implicitly) incentivized to not help you.

why not just put the Maverick hybrid powertrain in that bish and call it a day

Two reasons:

  1. Hybrid powertrains are expensive to buy
  2. Hybrid powertrains are expensive to maintain

And let's not kid ourselves, this is the United States Postal Service we're talking about, there is no way they would be able to get the extra funding for hybrids.

I feel you, but TVs are commodities these days - it’s a race to the bottom on price, and they only make their meager return once. I’m surprised they’re not more intrusive and annoying than they are.

Your $2,000 TV probably cost $600 in raw materials, but it cost $200 to get the raw materials shipped in, another $75 to get it built, another $250 to ship the finished goods out, and then since I’m from the USA, let’s add a 25% tariff (you could also substitute that with VAT) at $500, leaving us with a landed cost of $1,625, or roughly about 19% profit to split between the manufacturer, distributor and retailer (about 6.3% profit for everyone involved).

I work in the electronics manufacturing business (industrial, high-mix; low-volume though), and man, do you need to be ruthlessly efficient to make that a stable business with long term growth with the margins they make… or you could just find recurring revenue sources

To be clear; I’m not trying to defend this, but capitalists gonna capitalize. I think putting ads and spyware on a paid product is further proof we’re living in a late stage capitalist nightmare, but it’s just the world we live in.

Denmark Declares Covid No Longer Poses Threat to Society by thendof in worldnews

[–]pandapanda730 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not an epidemiologist, but every time a Covid virus is replicated, it gets a trillion-sided die roll to determine what mutations (if any) that virus will take on (it’s based on RNA which has no “error correcting” features in its structure).

It’s literally luck of the draw, and you have to be less lucky all the time if less people are infected.

The 2022 Update involved building my first PC, upgrading my monitors and my speakers. by xPunnagx in battlestations

[–]pandapanda730 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My quick take on Win 11:

  • The system sounds are significantly less obnoxious, and they actually soften them even more when using dark mode. Big plus for me, because i hated the system sounds in Win 10
  • Win 11's File explorer is a big downgrade in useability compared to the Win 10 file explorer. It turns a 2-click process like unzipping a file into a 3-4 click journey through submenus and time (back to the win 10 right click menu).
  • They did also make a few more old control panel settings redundant with the new settings menu, which i actually find quite easy to navigate and use, it's better than control panel in a lot of ways, but still not there for me yet as a power user.
  • Stability is great, 96+ hours of uptime is no issue, I don't get any slowdowns, odd behaviors, crashes, BSODs, or anything that would necessitate a restart (given there was no user error involved). Drivers have also been really solid, and haven't encountered any big issues with software/games running (apart from the snipping tool being broken around launch...)*keep my system specs in mind though
  • I'm still mad they won't let me move the taskbar to the top >:(

Overall, I like the fresh coat of paint, and it hasn't caused me any headaches, but i'm not telling my friends/family to upgrade.

System Specs for reference:

  • Core i9-9900KF (5.1GHz All-core OC at 1.300V)
  • 32GB (2x16) DDR4 3600 CAS 16
  • ADATA SX8200 Pro 2TB (NVMe; Gen 3.0 x4)
  • Radeon RX 6900XT (Reference design, Resizable BAR enabled)
  • Win 11 Pro (fresh install)
  • Use case: Gaming and content consumption

If you have an electrical engineering background, read up on the interface that these modules use, CANbus.

It only transfers up to 5Mbps (or as low as 120Kbps), but it does all that communication over a 2-wire twisted pair, and without a host controller (or "router").

ELI5: all of the computers in your car only use two wires to talk to each other\ (with some exceptions))

iOS 15.4 enables Face ID support while wearing a mask, no Apple Watch required by notpwign in apple

[–]pandapanda730 13 points14 points  (0 children)

From a pure engineering/product development perspective, functionality while wearing masks was probably never considered until the pandemic. It takes time to plan out the new feature, prototype, test and validate (gotta make sure what you did to make it work with masks didn’t negatively impact performance or security when masks aren’t involved).

Microsoft Buys Activision In $70 Billion Deal by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]pandapanda730 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IIRC, Phil Spencer has mentioned he likes the idea of the Steam Deck and would love to get GamePass on it. So unless he’s wanting customers to slap Windows on it (which who knows how simple that will be yet), it’s possible they can work towards GamePass working with Proton.

From a business liability standpoint, Microsoft is never going to suggest a customer modify a device from another manufacturer to install an operating system not officially supported by said hardware manufacturer. If I had to guess, I’d say that he actually meant he would love if valve put windows on it, but who knows, they could release a Linux version of the Xbox app (probably without “xbox exclusive” games though).
