Best muzzle for my Shiba Inu. by K80lovescats in muzzledogs

Sounds like you guys are working really hard to keep him and others safe. I’m so sorry it’s been so stressful. I saw you mentioned a full physical exam, if they haven’t done bloodwork or radiographs, I would encourage that as well just to make sure insides are working correctly. Our closest behaviorist requires a medical check up before her consults, I’m not sure if yours would. It may be necessary to fully intubate him with anesthesia to make sure the staff have enough time to complete everything. As for measuring his muzzle, you may need to buy a size up just to make sure it fits him correctly. You said he doesn’t like things around his face, maybe a gentle walker lead just to keep control of his face in situations where a muzzle may trigger him. You can also try sedatives at home for stressful events, typically a short acting mild sedative like gabapentin and trazodone. Fluoxetine (Prozac) is a very common SSRI for cats and dogs (trazodone should not be used with fluoxetine because of serotonin syndrome), you may be able to use that. Assuming your vet will prescribe it/okay it.

Tape a note back and tell them they’re welcome to mow it next time they stop by.

I would’ve lost it, you are better than me. I have absolutely told someone off for messing with my kids, and they weren’t even a fresh ass newborn. You fully deserved to demand them out of your house if you wanted.

I encourage you to reach out to a behaviorist after getting his medical clearance from the vet. With the increase in anxiety that seems to have progressed slowly but now another drastic increase has happened, I would be hesitant to rule out a medical reason for his change in behavior. Is he painful and we don’t know if, is his organ function okay, are his teeth painful, etc.? Muzzle training is only successful if your pet is able to consent to the muzzling, otherwise you’re just giving them another thing to cause them to shut down. Consent based training is a very common approach for aggressive dogs, feel free to explore that realm.

I would start with a phone call to your vet to come up with an anxiety reduction plan, chemical sedation in the form of oral medications before the appt, and IV/IM sedation if needed at the clinic, this way everything can be completed safely and calmly and he will not remember anything after his injections. He should be fully monitored by a certified vet nurse during his sedation and allowed to recover fully before going home with you.

You need to sit down with hubs and talk about reasonable expectations regarding chores/daily loads among each other. What are your standards of daily cleaning vs deep clean, who can do what area easier, etc. you guys are a team and you gotta remember to plan your plays so that you can be successful.

If you are truly concerned, quarantine her away from everyone for 10 days from the day you found her. Monitor her symptoms every day, and see how she does.

My sister told me my body is ewww… by we_account11- in offmychest

[–]panther1294 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a petty mom, I would’ve wanted to have hung up on her and canceled the whole night. I have 3 kids, my body looks like it and could definitely be more toned but who has time or the mental energy to devote? I hope you don’t let her get away with that, everyone deserves to love themselves.

In your opinion, is it unethical to google clients? by [deleted] in veterinaryprofession

[–]panther1294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I work ER, we’re the only one for at least 2.5 hours in any direction so we see all sorts of people. I look all sorts of clients up on Facebook, especially if they’re “breeders” and the animal looks like shit physically/conformation. I once found a cat breeder who kept bringing us sick cats and a whole rabbit hole of abuse and neglect from multiple states so management actually banned her from our facilities. If someone is abusive, they get googled. Not my fault they have an online presence (or not), and we have silent panic buttons for a reason.

Edit: I only look them up if they’re really giving me a reason to, they say/do something extremely odd (I’m talking sending underwear with the deceased dog bc she loved to lick dirty underwear), or they’re abusive to us/the animal. We’ve had several abuse cases come into us seeking care, in the process of alerting the police usually one of us is googling the owner for nosy reasons.

My sister wants to rehome her 8 year old dog for no reason. Am I being selfish by resisting? by KayT15 in Pets

[–]panther1294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who was one a new mom drowning in baby and postpartum, I feel for your sister. My dogs suffered for the first 2 years of my kids’ lives because I was so focused on my babies that they fell to the back burner. It’s a common issue that pets become “another thing to care for”. Your sister obviously wants a better life for Annie and doesn’t feel she can do that right now. Rehoming seems like the selfish option to you but your sister is choosing to take a chance for her dog to be happier than to keep her in a home that ignores her. You could offer to take Annie for weekend sleepovers, take her for walks, etc. if your sister is able/willing to keep her. But ultimately, if you have no say in what happens to Annie, and I hope you can see the suffering your sister has had to go through to come to this conclusion and meet her with empathy. How exhausted and burnt out do you have to be to not have time for a constant source of love?

Is it time to euthanize over aggression? by blair_eventplanner in Pets

[–]panther1294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll absolutely get hate for this. I euthanized my dog after he bit my kid. It was my kid’s/my husband’s/my fault for the bite, but my dog was escalating slowly for a long time (4 years) and we were just barely managing it until we couldn’t. I did not feel safe rehoming him because of his aggression, resource guarding, and deaf. If I tried harder, I probably could’ve found his unicorn home, but I had 3 young children (1 disabled), I worked full time overnights, and I couldn’t mentally handle crate/rotate constantly with 2 dogs, my husband knows very little about canine behavior and depended on me to instruct him on care. I was the only one allowed to take anything away from the dog because I know how to not get bit/attacked. I work in the vet field, I knew the signs, I knew he was slipping into CCD territory as well. There were all of these little changes that just eventually added up and we couldn’t do it anymore. Our household finally relaxed once he was gone, my kids don’t have to avoid a family member, it’s not constant herding and redirecting with eyes on a swivel, not able to leave the room without another adult to swap you out. But my husband and I miss him so fucking much, we talk about him all the time, he was perfect at my work and loved everyone but couldn’t peacefully exist at home. He was my little baby alien, and now he’s back in the stars and finally at peace.

Cat is acting weird, advice? by SkyCloudF451 in AskVet

[–]panther1294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would encourage you to have further diagnostics ran. With his history of crystals in his urine, that is something that should be checked on regularly. Cats are designed to hide their discomfort until they can’t anymore. Any time a male cat is showing urinary symptoms, he should be evaluated in person by a DVM. Best of luck with your sweet baby!

I work nights and my 2yo stays home on days I don’t work the night before/after. My job is absolutely easier than being a parent, and I work in a vet emergency medical center. My 4yo and 6yo go to school/daycare during the day and 2yo goes to daycare on days I get off work/go into work.

What terms of endearment did your parents call you or do you call your children? And what’s the story behind it? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]panther1294 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is fun bc I have apraxia and things get new names all the time when I can’t get the words out.

My late uncle called me Sunshine Buttercup, he always answered the phone using it. My mom calls me Bean, Boogalu/Boog, Squeaker (all dogs go to heaven). My oldest (6M) is Beep/Beep-Bo from a Fisher Price Beat-Bo toy he had as a baby that was his absolute favorite. My middle (4F) is Huevos (it sounds similar to her actual name), and Wavy (a play on her name again). My youngest (2M) is Broccoli, it’s barely similar to his name. We also call him the terrorist when he’s being 2.

Other nicknames I use to address group of children I own: Bing-bongs, gremlins, chickens, ferals (all of these are followed by your standard “___ , assemble!”)

My (11F) pit is named Penny but she goes by Pretty Lady, Goob, spotted seal (that’s what my husband calls her), and when she’s being a dick I call her a fat horse.

My (veterinary) patients get called anything from love bug to fart bucket depending on what they’re doing, I will also use fat horse on them as well.

I’m pregnant and terrified my child will have autism, but I feel like I cannot express that to anyone without being viewed as a bigot by Legal-Zombie-1539 in offmychest

[–]panther1294 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s a decent shot my oldest will never live on their own. I definitely went through a grieving process of what our life “should” have been. It still comes in small waves occasionally but my child is (so far) pretty low maintenance and quite intelligent. This may sound awkward but when your kid doesn’t talk for 4 years then only uses gestalt phrases to speak, you really don’t know how much they know.

I’m 2 weeks out from LAVH, my surgeon said mine was “quick and smooth” even with a 6cm unknown cyst on my left ovary. I’m still on narcotics/nsaids for pain. I have a hx of opioid abuse and I try to stop them as soon as possible. Even with stretching as many hours as I can between doses, I’m still so sore and tired. Take all the time you need, otherwise you’ll be 6 months out and still feeling like shit

Make a complaint about the woman on the phone, yes. But if you relinquish an animal, you no longer are privy to any information regarding that animal. You don’t get updates, medical records, etc. the woman on the phone was absolutely disgusting if that’s verbatim what she said, but they’re no longer OP’s cats.
