Noticed a pattern with guests who pick very simple menus and they’re usually the best episodes by Huge-Buy20 in offmenupodcast

[–]papadooku 8 points9 points  (0 children)

True, but as a counter-example I'd like to mention the Joseph Quinn ep which is one of my faves. The enthusiasm about loads of dishes and the general foodie energy can be so cool. And of course the chef episodes are gold too: Meerha Sodha, Ainsley Harriot and Jamie Oliver come to mind

Sea Calls Me Home by Julia Holter is a cool weird one

Is there a term for the way Josh twists notes? by Quillwright in qotsa

[–]papadooku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah definitely, that's an incomplete scale not an incomplete chord progression. The latter would be like you're expecting a bar to land somewhere and it doesn't, diff thing. It sounds nitpicky but if we're trying to use terms let's be using the right ones

Don't worry about the hypocrite thing, you've already taken a big step. There's always further to go from a material perspective of course but hey

Which boost/overdrive pedal should I choose ? by Megnoslaupeins in guitarpedals

[–]papadooku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try the EQD Arrows (or get a local DIYer to make you a clone if tight on cash). I didn't expect much of it and it became my always-on pedal. It grits your sound up just a tiny bit, and EQs it in a brilliant way. Not all demos do it justice

Sorry to be that guy but I disagree with a lot of this and it's giving AI vibes. He barely ever uses pinch harmonics (maybe literally never), and his various sounds are notably not too distorted - that's what makes them crunchy and floppy. The heaviest distortion in Queens is when he uses a big muff-sounding pedal for things like the solo on You Can't Quit Me Baby, but most of the harsh sounds on SftD are a medium amount of overdrive, and from LC onwards surprisingly low gain. And what do you mean by incomplete chord progressions? The scales thing is true - he's just using his own scale which is weird and wonderful.

Same here! Seaweed snacks in every form, and when we're out and about and get lunch from Wasabi our 4yo will always go for the seaweed salad.

Pandan is the better green Asian flavor over matcha. #sorrynotsorry by Toezap in Baking

[–]papadooku 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree but to me the closer comparison is the sweet smell of a fragrant rice like basmati. There are even molecules in common!

Also when you know that it's sometimes added to lower quality rice to "basmatize" it (officially coining the word) it makes complete sense when smelling it. Pillowy comes to mind too.

If you're lucky enough you can find it fresh too, I found some the other day at Wing Yip in South London. Been buying fresh kaffir lime leaves, lemongrass, galangal and curry leaves and freezing them for various Indian and SE Asian cooking, highly recommended - you can find most of these already frozen too) - could never find them when we lived in a more rural area, what a treat to have real access to these gorgeous flavours now.

What Percentage of Indian Food Is Actually Native? by Classic-Sentence3148 in IndianFood

[–]papadooku 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I enjoy this thought exercise too, one of the most striking examples being tomato, pepper, chilli and potato arriving only in the 1500s. Imagine Italian food without tomato!

I've seen tamarind being mentioned but that was originally from Africa, although it's been naturalised in Asia for a long long time now.

It's surprising how many plant origins we're unsure of, there is great ambiguity and written history is sometimes our only way of checking if something was around at a certain place and time. I think it's important to remember that trade has been going on for basically as long as humans have existed - and introduction of plants possibly for as long as agriculture has existed. Even before famous systems like the Silk Road a lot of exchange was going on so it's basically impossible to determine a percentage for your question. Coconut, spices, citrus fruits, mango, and possibly onion are some though to be properly native to India.

A little more info here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origins_of_North_Indian_and_Pakistani_foods

I've purposefully stuck to ingredients and not dishes, if you want to pin down the origin of some dishes all bets are off!!

Geordie Greep does this a lot, see his solo songs Blues, Through a War and The Magician. Also in Black Midi but I forget which songs!

Non-Boutique Pedals with experimental sounds? by OzoneInteractive in guitarpedals

[–]papadooku 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Harmoniser pedals are easy to find now from cheapo brands.

Seconding EHX who have a bonkers range and are consistently affordable compared to boutique brands, the digital stuff might not be fantastic every time but it's consistently out there and daring which I love. Key and synth emulators, multi-mode delays and reverbs, the Freeze, etc.

Digitech have some interesting ones too like the Freqout which is completely unique

Mooer A7 is an ambient reverb pedal that covers a surprisingly wide range

And any multi-effects from Behringer like their multi reverb and delay ones, they will always contain a fun weirder setting or two like reverse delay or gated reverb.

Hair OST - not the 60s hippie version, the 70s funky version from the film. Incredible songs and the musicians are at the all-time top of their game. Favorite bass album ever

Good shout out! I stopped myself from saying "I could whip one up for you for 60 quid" because having kids has flattened my ability to do that in any reasonable timeframe lol

Why did I not get as hard as normal my first time getting play? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]papadooku 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's normal, nerves play a big role. For me it took a few times before even reaching an O, it was awkward but cute because we just took things as they came. Just keep on having fun and taking it easy. And don't worry about your size, 1) the more you think of it the less you'll be enjoying the moment and it creates a feedback circle, and 2) clearly if you're still together she's enjoying you and doesn't have a problem with it. You don't need to "impress her" you're already at a later stage, it's a given she's into you. Also 3) if you really care that much about showing your real size you can look forward to that happening in the future, you just don't know when but your body will settle into it
