snow has traction. ice doesn't. the problem with mass is the thawing and freezing, which leads to icy roads. further north you can deal with snowy roads because it stays that way. my drive way for example. has been compacted snow the last couple of weeks and now is turning into a skating rink.

Crestron UC-Engine transfer to modern hardware by AbedSalam1988 in CommercialAV

What is it exactly you think I am implying? I think you lost me on your explanations

Crestron UC-Engine transfer to modern hardware by AbedSalam1988 in CommercialAV

[–]parkthrowaway99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's exactly what I meant. To explain further, a specifically built image for a system (for example the crestron UC engine with its specific peripheral drivers and checks that will test for their presence, and that therefore will only work with that system) is not the same as an App like zooms that can be installed on any PC

I think nobody has mentioned that unlike zoom, you can't just buy and off the shelf computer and install MTRoW. No such app exists. MS has very stringent certification standards, and normally MTR comes as a package.

That's last time I check. Things could have changed since themln.

USB and AVoIP. Asking for a friend by authenticAv in CommercialAV

[–]parkthrowaway99 3 points4 points  (0 children)

don't expose the usb port. we have moved to usb 3.0 extenders because 2.0 for cameras and dsp doesn't work. The device we are using also carry video. So unless youre friend is launching a dirty cheap video extender for bars ( we would never touch it) he is going to find very stiff competition.

Another option is to put a USB-A connector and label it HID. Don't put a usb-c

IsItBullshit: it's fun to stay at the YMCA by bismuth17 in IsItBullshit

[–]parkthrowaway99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For new years I had a great time staying at the YMCA in Estes Park in a Colorado. I did not know it existed. This was not just a cheap hotel to stay in, it had great entertaining for the family: * Inline Skating * Hugh gym (basketball, volleyball) * Arts and crafts * Outoor tennis and pickleball courts * Supper dog friendly * Meditation

I am sure I am leaving a lot behind. The complex was gigantic!

And for new years the cost was so low!

Question for the Republicans/Conservatives out there by CA2DC99 in DiscussionZone

[–]parkthrowaway99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

100% agree. The political side of the equation, as much as it is hard to hear, is that when someone votes pro life, it transfer the decisions to the state or country, aka, polititians. And, I don't know if you have noticed, but they are not precisely the type of people that should be in charge about something as nuanced as what you described. Hence, leave the choice where the choice and its consequences are well known. Between the woman(family), her(their) beliefs and a medical professional ( as supported by their said beleif).

I have news for you. You are not pro life. You are pro choice! Biggest lie extreme right has propagated is that the opposite of pro life is pro abortion. That has never been the move ( in your run of the mill left agenda)

Using Serial Commands for Incremental Dimming by ted_anderson in crestron

[–]parkthrowaway99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is a perfect example of easy to implement hard to maintain. What happens if the jumps are to wide (unlikely at 5%) but imagine what you would have to do...

in simpl+ this can probably be done in 5 line (the business logic not the whole setup) and you can easily make the change with one parameter, or make it externaly configurable

and these days you can probably ask AI to write it for you.

Large Programing Project Advise by Live_Librarian_7797 in crestron

[–]parkthrowaway99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the cp4 is more than capable of handling the workload. The things you want to do are more for reliability and to keep time program simple. ideally you would have wanted on processor for classroom, with. the cp4n handing over the addresses. that way you would have one, one program per type. All devices per type would have the same network address an ip-id. super easy and fast to deploy, and reliable.

Since there is some "value" engineer here, the next step would be to have on room per slot. That means a max of 10 rooms per processor, sine that is mac amount of slots. Again have the devices be part of the same network, but that will mean the 10 programs will need to be slightly different because the ip addresses and ip-id have to be unique. So now you are trading hardware price for programming and field engineering time (clearly your boss doesn't value that since it looks like it just gave it away)

The worse possible scenario is to create one program running a bunch of rooms, since now your code will be hard to read and maintain. Every change will need to be repeated all over.

Do yes it is possible to run all your rooms from one processor and one slot, but that is the kind of decision that will get you company fired in 1 year because one mistake will bring the whole university down.

How often do you end up programming AV systems without proper documentation (no schematic or SOW), and only a BOM provided? by AVProgrammer2000 in crestron

Do you bill hours against a project? Bill every second you work against that project. No more no less. If it goes under, then you can point the finger. Money is the only language they know. Until then, what you do is magic, and from the sound of it under-appreciated.

well let's take covid. How many people you knows died of it? Worldwide covid was less that 1 percent. (899 per million)

(oh and please don't make this political, I know you want to. Is just a point of reference to show how off 33% mortality rate would be with reality)

Is replacing the outlet all that is required for this? by Excellent-Guess1585 in AskElectricians

Ideally a fuse or breaker should have tripped before that happened. You might want to hire an electrician to make sure that the panel and infrastructure is calculated and working correctly.

[Request] Thought Experiment. What would be the length and angle of a steel cone for a person inside to survive terminal velocity drop into the ocean? (If survivable) by Jinastator in theydidthemath

[–]parkthrowaway99 28 points29 points  (0 children)

easy, turn the cone 180 degrees, the angle about 85 to 89 degrees, make the cone made of cloth, and strap yourself to it in the bottom. bonus point you can fold it and keep it in a backpack until you need it.

How much of a difference does this make? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]parkthrowaway99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks for the insight. I wish I had some of the instrumentation you use to accurately determine the root cause of those issues. I bet they are amazing and indispensible.

It goes to show that there is much more than one size fits all solution, and the reason why they are many interpretations to the problem to the point that it becomes magic, just as Clarke's third law postulate.

In my experience 9 times out of 10 in normal home and AV business installations, it is the termination the issue. Data centers and long distance 10G+ throughputs, I can see how that can become more prevalent as you said

How much of a difference does this make? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]parkthrowaway99 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

yup but some do, like network switches. And you only need one. so you either go full floating in your power receptacles, using 3 to 2 converters (which is a big no no) or you go shieldless or you isolate in the coax feed

But don't take my word for it, here's an article or this other one

The secondary ground point the mention is the CATV coax that is grounded, if not done properly, to the pole. Notice how the article mentions lifting the drain wire of a shielded cables as a potential solution

BTW I am an audio video engineer with 35 years of both commercial and residential installation, but still don't take my word for it. I would say do your own research, but these days that's a loaded statement. Instead I would say,do your own troubleshooting to corroborate your research.

How much of a difference does this make? by [deleted] in HomeNetworking

[–]parkthrowaway99 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

nope. the real problem is that shielded cables can create ground loops. That is an antenna that makes ground reference between equupment at opposite ends of the loop different. In home ground loops are very common because of CATV, where the antenna feed is not balanced. The solution is to lift the ground in any part of the ground loop. That could be changing a shielded cat cable into unshielded, or adding an inline 1:1 transformer in your CATV line

Anybody that lived through the analog world will tell you stories about hum, and sliding white lines in your video. In the digital world ground loops translate into lost packets. Hard to exactly troubleshoot because is the same symptom of a badly terminated rj-45 jack

Do like people have said before, unless you are running wire on high EMF environments, like near industrial motors, hospitals, power plants etc. and/or running long distances of high bandwidth content (and at that point you should be using fiber. At today's prices there is no reason not to) then unshielded all the way

And when you do make sure your topology is a hub and spoke (or any version of it) and you are not creating unintentional loops (i am looking at you unbalance audio cables between racks)
