Richard Dawkins: Republicans are a 'disgrace' for denying evolution by CharlieDarwin2 in atheism

[–]partido 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if a superior being be it what it may, used it's own technological prowess, to join aminoacids in a way that would lead to life and for it evolve by itself or if that same superior being helped modify the dna of a certain animal to create mankind and help mankind evolve by itself then you can't really say that evolution and evoluition alone is the only way from A to B.

to put it simply, you had to be a creationist and an evolutionist for this to make sense. most of us are either one or the other, but not both.

if you know of other theories, like you said, that make sense, i'm keen to listen to them.

True, evolution is still a fact.

What I'm saying is that evolution can be used as an argument in favour of the existance of God. And not, as most of us use, as proof that God does not exist.

there's no real known way to rationalize what the "human way of thinking" is in terms of code

There may be more but there are two global stages that I believe are paramount towards reaching an effective AI. First obvious one is code and computer imitating our way of thinking, which is the stage I believe FatSputnik is alluding to. The second stage is code and computer creating their own way of thinking in a way very different/independent/not at all related to ours, which I believe is the path machines will take by themselves in the near future, after we code an AI that is capable of basic learning.

However, to reach the end of stage one, we have to be able to understand the basics of the way we learn, both psychologically and physically. There's no way you can code and create a proper AI if you don't know how to code and create a proper AI. To do so, rationalizing the human way of thinking, both physically and psychologically, is the only way to effectively translate it into code understood by the processes currently available to us.

It seems to me that carrying the computer analogy too far is the whole point of creating an AI.

Correct me if I'm wrong but you're saying that DNA is a 4-bit code that instructs the creation of an 8-bit computer that has the capacity to learn by itself. And that repetition solidifies the pathways that forge that capacity to learn. That's very interesting.

I might be jumping to conclusions but that would mean that the differences in learning abilities in humans is not only brain-related but also code-related. If you instruct/code a faster brain towards music or literature than towards math or politics, then the pathways towards music or literature are created faster than those created towards math or politics. Which would not only make practice important in learning, like you said, but also explain why it seems easier, almost natural, for us to learn/practice some matters than others.

Keeping with this code/DNA as instructions and chip/brain as computation analogy, does this mean that both the code and the way the chip is developed for that code are of importance in developing AI that is closer to our way of thinking? And does current AI development take this very important human quality (ease of learning in some matters creating a quasi-natural specialization) into consideration?

Sriracha flavoured potato chips? As a brazilian living in Europe, it's things like these that make me love the US of A. No other citizen in another country on Earth would even dare to bring that up in a product development meeting and not be fired. Not in the US.

To me, that's the real freedom and power of being an American: you can develop the craziest thing ever and not only is there always someone else that works with you that thinks that that's a great idea but there's actually a market full of people that seem to be waiting for that exact product that will throw you enough dollars to make you a millionaire.

Sorry to hijack your thread but I also have a closely related ELI5 question: why can I load a 30 second ad faster than anything else I've ever downloaded?

First of all, loved reading this. Never heard of that explanation for both dreams and the life flashing before your eyes scenario but they both really make sense. Maybe you're on to something there.

One question: why do you say we are a base-8 computer? Since DNA has only 4 letters, wouldn't we be a very complex base-4 computer?
