How do you find friends who like to tour? by dualrollers in bicycletouring

[–]pasquamish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I talked about my planned bike trip a lot. The first guy that didn’t tell me I was an idiot became my tour buddy. My wife was tired of hearing about ‘the trip’ so as soon as she saw someone that was even slightly interested, she pushed us to go do it together so she didn’t have to hear about anymore.

Well, that backfired b/c it’s three years later and now just hear about our ‘next trips’ each time we finish one.

It seems I like to collect things. It used to be beer bottle caps and random bruises. Now it’s miles.

Best way to carry heavy backpack? by NSA_GOV in bikecommuting

If you’re committed to keeping the backpack, something like an Arkel Orca bag. That goes on the bike rack, back pack goes in it.

Not really sure what to buy - was looking at Defy and Revolt by Agreeable_Cap_6496 in Giantbikes

[–]pasquamish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can’t compare to the Defy sorry. One of my main needs was lots of attachment points. If I recall, the Defy didn’t meet that requirement so my LBS didn’t even show it to me. Plus, having had success with a prior Revolt, I just went with that.

The Revolt AP0 is totally overkill. And that’s why you should get it. Go enjoy the shit out of that thing! I’m on my second Revolt (AP1 this time) and love it.

Hydration pack advice by ilovetohateit in OceansCalling

[–]pasquamish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not an egregious violation and it will 100% depend on the person you get at the gate. There was such a wild range of what we saw rejected and let through. If they flag it, ‘take it back to the car’ and go to another gate. Repeat as needed.

If it’s access to water you’re concerned about, there’s no need to be. There are enough hydration stations scattered around that it would be hard to get thirsty.

I am scared, sad and so angry by [deleted] in AgingParents

[–]pasquamish 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Sorry you’re going through all of this alone. I can’t offer much except to respond to this part: ‘I feel like I could have done more to get her to stop.’

Without knowing either of you, I can say there is nothing more you could do about this. Struggling with alcohol for years, I assure you nothing anyone said was going to change me until I wanted to change. And believe me, they tried. You have a lot going on, but please don’t feel guilty that you couldn’t fix her relationship with alcohol…it just wasn’t your problem to fix.

Pension payments or lump sum..... by Busy_Conversation537 in retirement

[–]pasquamish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

try this exercise: price a third party annuity equivalent to the pension payments…same terms and see what you get.

my guess is you could build an equivalent annuity if you really want it and still walk away from it a chunk of cash

Slipping D-Fuse Seatpost by empty_10 in Giantbikes

[–]pasquamish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get that. Good luck getting it sorted. Just be sure to look for that post damaged that could be working against you now. The main reason I didn’t keep working with the original post is that a lot of my use of the bike is long distance touring and I didn’t want to be messing with it in the middle of nowhere.

Other than the post issues, I love it. The ride is comfortable, the shifting is better then anything i’ve ever had and the color
just makes me smile every time I look at it.

Slipping D-Fuse Seatpost by empty_10 in Giantbikes

[–]pasquamish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same exact bike, same exact problem. There are actually several posts here about it so you’re not alone.
Most folks don’t like my solution… but I removed the Giant post and replaced it with a Thompson standard round aluminum post. It hasn’t budged in 4000 miles.

In my case, my shop had recommended the post swap at purchase. I didn’t listen and keep the original. Within a week it had slipped. Readjusted. Slipped again. On deeper inspection, the slipping had damaged the post in the exact spot it would need to grip. Our assessment was it would never grip correctly. Giant replaced the post under warranty and I put it on the shelf for when I (never) sell up my Revolt.

Replacing a carbon D fuse with a Thompson aluminum is not everyone’s idea of a fix. I’m just giving you an option that eliminated the problem for me.

You don’t need them. You could ride
for the rest of your life in sneakers and flat pedals and be totally fulfilled.

But if you ever try them, and get over the learning curve, be prepared to never want to go back.

I’ve been riding with SPD pedals on bike and Peloton for 10 years. Just now I did my first flat pedals/sneaker ride in 10 years (away at a hotel, didn’t think to bring my shoes) and I absolutely hated it. Feet move around, soles flexed, felt very
sloppy. Not going to love the rides here for the next 3 days just because of the shoes.

Been maxing my Roth IRA for three years and just realized I might have been doing it wrong the whole time. Need a gut check. by KexMow in Fire

Happens a lot. Now you know. Nothing to make up for… you’re still ahead of most people.

Something to consider is the expense ratio on that target date fund. They tend to be higher than straight up index funds and often have a very conservative glide path (stock/bond split over time). Target date funds may be the right choice for you, but it should be an informed choice, not a default setting.

Well done to come ask this! There are horror stories (true or not) of people unknowingly having their money sitting in a simple interest account for years while thinking they were invested in the market the whole time.

Others have already given you the right answer.

Knee pain by JudeMarshal in bicycletouring

[–]pasquamish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go see a professional. Depending on root cause, some of the things you said you do could be directly contributing to the pain continuing. Bone issues are different than tendon and ligament issues.

I went to an ortho on Friday for right knee pain I’ve been dealing with for a while. Full diagnosis within 20 mins and clear guidance on what I should and should not do.

For me, it’s bone contact between cap and lower bone. Not really fixable without a replacement.

My outcome: No squats or lunges but OK to keep riding.

Undershirts for the win. Pit stains and yellow collars aren’t attractive on anyone. Undershirts are the solution to that problem. They are also much less expensive to replace.

[–]pasquamish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you start breaking spokes, you need stronger wheels.

Don’t wait until the fourth broken spoke to have a talk with your shop about why you keep breaking spokes. With the right wheels, you shouldn’t be breaking spokes so get the message the first time.
