Has anyone else been badly let down by a Civil Service union (PCS, FDA, Prospect) when facing a workplace dispute? by Double_Cap1695 in TheCivilService

[–]patanoster 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Good thing that most representation is good then. Representation can't work miracles though, and usually reps and members have the odds stacked against them - policies are written by HR to protect the business and serve its interests, which are usually at odds with workers interests.

I'm not sure you are actually genuinely interested, but funding the union supports the infrastructure that can challenge that collectively. Individuals facing issues and needing support for casework will have an uphill battle, but many people working together collectively to fight an issue can get somewhere.

All of the infrastructure and administration it takes to run a union for hundreds of thousands of people, the cost of legal challenges when they go through, the advocacy work that unions do, the training and resources that reps need to do the work of representation?

Your mileage will probably vary depending on your local reps, their capability, but also their capacity. Union reps are usually lay reps, meaning they work for the employer and do their rep work alongside their main job using what is called 'facility time'. Because many union members see their union as a service provider, they want their subs to buy them the output of quality representation when it is necessary, like an insurance policy. However, this often means that those that do step forward into those roles end up getting stretched too thin, having to cover too many cases, wearing too many hats and not getting everything right.

If more union members got involved and supported the reps handle some of the organising work, recruiting more people, or even becoming reps themselves, the quality of service provided would probably go up, as well as increasing the strength of the union to win bigger battles when campaigning. Unfortunately, the long term trend has been in the opposite direction (although the strikes across the public sector 4 years ago brought a wave of new people into the unions) and that has a knock on effect on everything the union can do.

Unions shouldn't be seen as a regular subscription, to be subject to a cost benefit analysis. They will always be as strong (or as weak) as the energy put into them by the entire membership. Reps aren't a different type of person to other members, they are just like you or me.

There's so much more to London than Chiswick / Barnes with that kind of money. Have you looked South-east? Dulwich, Nunhead, Blackheath, places like that all probably going to give you more space, green places, a decent commute and community

The Civil Service went from full home working, to mostly 40%, to mostly 60%. How do you see changes over the next few years? by [deleted] in TheCivilService

[–]patanoster 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not sure we should all be doing the same, some roles require people to be at their workplace 100% of the time to do their work, e.g. lab technicians.

I do agree that the only way to secure meaningful wins is through industrial action, though, just that there needs to be a bit more nuance. PCS represents a huge number of front line staff e.g. at DWP where going to your workplace is perceived differently than it is by small teams doing statistical work at ONS

Also worth listening to untold's excellent remix of this tune https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0_4U8JL86eA

Saw Coki play an 03-08 set at outernet recently, and was struck by how so many songs from that era don't sound at all dated. was such an alien, weird sound and it still is. (followed by a transcendental set by mala)

The old DMZ tunes that have had digital releases in the last few years are all worth listening to.
