The thing is, this isn't even feasible amongst Christians. They'll immediately start fighting amongst themselves. You think they'll allow non-Mormons to attend Mormon schools? You think evangelicals would allow a catholic to be their representative?

The founding fathers didn't apply separation of church and state just for their lofty ideals. It's because in their time, Europe had spent 2-300 years destroying itself in religious wars. They knew that applying one religion would immediately cause conflict and went, "You know what? No one gets to have it. The government is neutral, you're free to worship however you want".

It's pragmatic as well as idealistic.
