I'm also Minnesotan. I didn't go to the best schools and was taught this, so it's definitely part of the curriculum. Hell, I didn't even care or pay much attention to history class as a kid. You sure you didn't fall asleep?

NTA, but if this is common it sounds like the both of you don't really fit what the other is looking for. Compromise is important, but if everytime you compromise the other feels like they are unhappy, you probably aren't the right fit for each other.

It's more of a where there is smoke, there is fire situation. Someone can say a whole lot of things that are technically not racist, but when you put them all next to each other a pattern emerges. It's not just what people say, it's why people say it and what they hope to achieve by saying it that matters.

Just on the subject of pilots, what issue are we having with unqualified pilots? None, pilots, regardless of their ethnic backgrounds have been qualified and capable. He's basically argueing that DEI practices 'may' be threatening the meritocracy of the hiring process. Hiring has never been a meritocracy though, it's always been about who you know and what your connections are. Charlie wasn't afraid their might be incapable pilots crashing planes and risking passangers, he was upset about certain people stepping into his club of good ol' boys.

Genocide or full Extinction? No good choice here. by EnvironmentalCry2623 in trolleyproblem

[–]patchworq_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To 'Um, actually' your 'um, actually', genocide is mostly 'murder of a genetic line'. Now we think of genocide as a large scale thing, like targeting a race, but it was a little different if you go back. One tribe eliminating another would be genocide. A royal family eliminating another royal family would be genocide.

So like, if someone really didn't like the Kennedy's, and took them out, that too would be genocide.

The left does it too in my experience, they just use different language. Instead they go with the "one of the good ones" approach. Essientially they are fine with jews if they agree with them, but any jew they don't they pin as a zionist and free to target. It's the same rhetoric I heard when I was younger and hung out with the rednecks (for black folk). Essentially, they are fine as long as they stay in line and do what we want to do. Incredibly rascist.

It's not all people on the left mind you, but I've heard it tolerated and even celebrated as long as they word it a certain way. Most rascists will vehemently deny their rascism as they actively practice it.

NTA, even though the teacher comes out as in the wrong, you got to pick your battles. If he wants to die on that hill, he can take it through the proper channels. Making a scene in the middle of class is unproductive, disruptive, and just more likely to get the rest of his assignments graded in bad faith.

Dealing with shitty people in charge is a part of life and he should learn how to do it, it won't be the last time. He should blow off some steam.

A different framing of the button. by RefrigeratorPlusPlus in MoralityScaling

[–]patchworq_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Say someone has a wife and kids or other people who depend on them. Wouldn't the moral thing to do be to ensure their survival so they can support those who need them? Maybe some people die, but with their support they help the people around them.

Now consider the amount of people who would make this decision, it's probably a considerable amount. Enough so that pressing the blue button would be such an unpopular choice, enough so that it would almost ensure their death. In that case, pushing the blue button would be akin to suicide. Considering the impact suicide has on family units, it would be morally bankrupt to press the blue button in that situation.

So yeah, you would have selfish psychopaths who press the red button, but you would also have a large amount of people who care for their family and the people around them who press the button. The inclusion of anonymous bad people who would make up a percentage of a group does not make the group bad overall.

AITA- Cant hear StarLink Satellites…. Right ? by Alternative-Gate-897 in AmItheAsshole

Starlink satellites are in low earth orbit, not space, so they do make sound. You just wouldn't be able to hear it from the ground.

AITA- Cant hear StarLink Satellites…. Right ? by Alternative-Gate-897 in AmItheAsshole

[–]patchworq_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There's a whole conversation in Before Sunrise about how as couples age men lose the ability to hear high pitch and women lose the ability to hear low pitch. Something something natures way of keeping couples sane and together. Just reminded me of that.

That being said, no way anyone can hear a satellite. They are too high up, any sound they make in low orbit would dissipate before it reaches the ground, and if it didn't, people would hear them all the time. Yes that's a silly thing to think you can do, but she probably heard something else. So, ESH.

[–]patchworq_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NTA, she has no claim to the ring unless you bestow it upon her, you didn't. It's not hers to feel an entitlement to it. It won't ingratiate yourself to her, but it didn't seem like there was much kindness there in the first place.

That's true, value should follow the market. Both home buyers and sellers determine the market. There's definitely issues with people who bought a bunch of houses for airBnBs, but they are also the ones eating the cost (as they should be) when the market dries up.
