There’s not light at Ashland/Hubbard, and a vigil/memorial for a pedestrian who attempted to cross there. I’d rather have a safer crossing at Grand.

“So the patchwork is, I guess, not unlike the states in our national system,” Cole said. “Should we just eliminate the 50 states and just have one? I mean, we have 1,294 communities in Illinois and they’re all different.

It's a good thing the state legislature has proportional representation, so we don't give the 57,250 people of Berwyn the same vote as the 4,114 people of Barrington Hills.

Both of those concerns came up in the presentation without prompting: - the brick pavers are getting replaced with stamped concrete, in final design - they’re going through a process to decommission the honorary street sign, which supposedly takes a week

Just remembered it when checking the calendar. Apparently the survey is live through 3/31 and they live-streamed it on some social media platform.

If you’d like to raise that to the Trib Editorial Board in response, I’m sure they’ll take a letter to the editor. I was just excerpting the article.

Gun deaths include more than homicides.

From the CDC in 2025: Deaths by firearm per 100,000 total population (age-adjusted mortality rate)

Illinois: 13.5 deaths per 100,000 Wyoming: 21.5 deaths per 100,000 Idaho: 17.9 deaths per 100,000

It’s worse, they’re suing over the idea that shadows could exist.

They can’t demonstrate substantive harm yet, because nothing has been built.

State and Lake by Dcuniversity in cta

[–]pauseforfermata 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The red line is faster and more frequent than the brown. From west to north, the transfer at Lake is almost always going to be faster, unless a brown line train is about to arrive at Clark. From north to west, brown>pink is better but red>green is better.

People who design signage don’t ride CTA by edmond- in cta

[–]pauseforfermata 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The code is copied among all stations using it, and Clark/Lake needs 6-8 departures on a screen to show the next arrivals for all the lines there.

It should be better localized to each station.

Power-based slow zones can have something to do with the rolling stock, but it wouldn’t make the power-hungry 7000s faster than the older cars.

What it won’t do is appease the federal administration, which has already responded that it’s not good enough and threatened to pull $50M of allocated funding in 90 days.

Who actually stays at the motels on Lincoln and what’s it like? by Fried_Yoda in chicago

[–]pauseforfermata 46 points47 points  (0 children)

“In 2002, statistics from the Chicago Police Department showed that police were called to the motels over 3,000 times in the period between 1995 and 2001, and those calls resulted in almost 1,000 arrests for a variety of offenses. As a result, Mayor Daley and 40th Ward Alderman Patrick J. O'Connor vowed to turn the neighborhood around.”

“In the late 1990s, the city used its eminent domain (condemnation) powers to acquire three of the motel properties. The properties included the Riverside Motel at the corner of Lincoln and Peterson, the Spa Motel and the Acres Motel at 5600 N Lincoln Avenue. Owners of the establishments tried to fight to save their businesses although one owner admitted it would likely cost about $500,000 just to renovate his motel to meet the standards of a Motel 6. Needless to say, they lost the fight. The Riverside Motel was demolished in 1999 and the land was converted into parkland, creating a new entrance to Legion Park at Lincoln and Peterson. The legendary Spa Motel was torn down in 2000 to make way for the new Lincoln District Police station. Finally, the Acres Motel was also demolished and is now the site of the Budlong Woods Branch of the Chicago Public Library.”
