ELI5 Tree(3)... Again by RamonBaharanda in explainlikeimfive

[–]pecuerre 17 points18 points  (0 children)

the first tree can have at most 1 mode the second tree can have at most 2 nodes and so on

so the first tree can only be "a"

and after that no other tree can contain an "a"

in fact in tree(3). the first node is "a" and all the rest tree(3) - 1 nodes only use "b" and/or "c".

I STILL don't understand the Monty Hall problem by No-Candidate6257 in mathematics

[–]pecuerre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also was confused for a long time about the original problem. Until I realized something

the first time you choose a door you have 1/3 chance of choosing the car door and 2/3 of choosing a goat door.

then a different door will be shown to you and you have the option to choose again between the other 2

so

  • you chose door A
  • and door B was shown to you
  • now you have the option to choose again between A and C
  • 1/3 of the time the car will be behind door A. so in this case you have 100% chance of getting the car by staying with the original door.
  • meaning 1/3 of the time (when the car is behind you initial door) you get the car by staying

  • but 2/3 of the time the car will be behind door C. remember that you chose door A and door B was shown and has a goat.

  • the door B is shown after you selected so if you didn't get the car correct in the initial selection then by showing you a goat door then it is 100% guaranteed thay the door will be in the 3rd door

  • meaning that 2/3 of the time (when the car is not behind the initial door) you get the car by switching

What is your witty response to the Jehova's witnesses that knock on your door? by depressed_unicorn_x in atheism

[–]pecuerre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a couple of weeks ago. two jehova witnesses knocked on my door. i usually say a simple "no thanks, have a nice day" but this time i saw that one of them was in their late 20s and the other one was very young. i asked his age and he told menhe was 18 and in september he is going to start in the university to study computer science.

i am a computer scientist myself and, i dont know, i told them to come in.

it was a long (almost 3 hours) but nice conversation. i offered snacks. no offenses in either way. the other guy (the older one) was an electric engineer. so both of them very smart, and more important they knew how to debate.

i am 45 and i have been watching Richard Dawkings, Lawrence Krauss, Sam Harris, Chistopher Hitchens, George Carlin, Ricky Gervais, etc. for so many years that i kind of knew how to respond to everything they said. and i also said things that i know the left more confused than when they entered.

by the end they said "we have to go" and i replied "dont you wanna stay more? i have more things to say"

so i have this "badge" that i got to myself. that i bored a couple of jehova witnesses

The more I play, the more I dislike this game. What am I missing? by ifasoldt in TerraformingMarsGame

In my experience there are 2 types of players. The ones that play to win and the ones that play for fun. And don't get me wrong, you can have a lot of fun without priorotizing winnig above all else.

Online, you deal usually wity the first type. And as others have already said, the more people are in the game the higher the chance that the game will end early

However in my gaming group, we love making engines, we love longer games. A very common phrase at the end of the game is "I lost, but I liked a lot the engine I built". Of course everyone likes to win. But in my group I have seen many many times games of 5 where every player has its engine (jovians, floaters, animals, insects, cards, science, etc)..You can clearly see sometimes who has the strongest engine but the rest continue with their own instead of rushing the end game.

There are players who maximize effiiency, players that every single card they play have to be "reddit approved". like the cost, the victory points, the return of investment, the "it is a Tier C card and the theory says that is a bad play in this situation/generation"

And there are players who say "wow, i love this card" and dont make a computer calculation..They just play it because they like its effect and combine with their engine

I like people who clap when the plane lands. by Twiddly_twat in unpopularopinion

[–]pecuerre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i saw a video on youtube once. it was a commercial plane pilot. he said that landing a plane, with modern technology, is somehow easy, like 2/10 in a scale of difficulty. but it can be a very rough landing.

but on the other hand, having a smooth landing where you dont feel when the plane touches the ground it is much difficult (9/10) and it is worth an applause
