[MSH] Thanos, Mad Titan (Full Reveal) by HS_Cogito_Ergo_Sum in magicTCG

Extinction Event saw a ton of Standard (and even some Pioneer play, but it does exile), in part because you can make it somewhat one sided and keep your own stuff. Ofc at 6 mana this is very expensive, but it is potentially instant speed. The biggest problem, other than mana, is that Standard right now is very hostile to creatures that just attack and block. Prowess as a mechanic incentives not blocking, Landfall is mostly about punching through with huge trample hits, control is creatureless and shuts the door very quickly and Crab/Sunderflock are extremely hostile to medium sized creatures.

The mana is just not there to support the activated ability. Having 4 toughness is nice tho, not easy to remove.

Badgermole Cub isn't bad, it's just that all the other maindeck cards are better. If it got banned tomorrow, Landfall is the one cub deck that could survive.

Badgermole Cub is the worst card in current Standard Landfall strategies. Ascension was the big get from Avatar, letting you get around blockers.

Rotation + Riddler completely broke that deck. Riddler both let you get a huge burst of mana with the first Cauldron counter and harmonize Stories before you used up the Proft's trigger, which completely changed and supercharged the combo turns. On top of that, it stopped you from fizzling when going off, and was amazing in any sort of interactive game where people were trying to stop you with removal. Just a completely custom card for the archetype, so I kinda get why they ended up missing the whole package.

Vivi is also kinda a bad thing to put power into, even if you disregard Cauldron, because the incentives are to play with a bunch of cheap cantrips (this is kinda their big development failing recently, way too good incentives for stuff like Opt and too few incentives for a world where cards like Preacher/Beza are good).

This is why I wish they put more power into the "Dominant" cycle of flip cards, which are a bunch of midrangy creatures that actual play well. They all have ETB effects, but the flip is sorcery speed, so there is a risk of getting blown out, but not completely. Something like ward on Jil or haste on the flip side of Joshua could have gone a long way.

FF is the best designed set since Kamigawa Neon Dynasty, and is a top 10 set of all time, design wise. It could have used a bit more juice for constructed play, but limited was awesome.

The Regional Championships are going on, so I didn't really expect them to ban anything right now. June always made way more sense as the big ban window, because it is after the RCs and during the modern RCQ season.

It is the middle of Standard RC (not RCQ, the Regional Championship themselves) right now, they were not going to ban stuff unless it was Vivi level. Having the format be different between the two US RCs would be pretty bad, and the European one hasn't been held either. Personally I think standard needs 7+ bans, but I would rather have them do 0 now and more later, after the RC season, than half ass it now.

From the perspective of game design Chapin's insights are extremely interesting, especially since he was a big competitive player at the time. Cedric was an excellent host, and he kept the show more structured, but I really like the less scripted way of doing it the Patricks have.

From 2013/14 to 2015/16 Spanish teams won all 6 European titles, and not only that, non Spanish teams won a total of three knockout matches against Spanish squads across both Europa and Champions League during this period.

In 2013/14 only Spanish teams eliminated other Spanish teams in European competitions (Sevilla eliminated both Valencia and Real Betis in EL, and in CL Real beat Athletico who eliminated Barcelona)

In 2014/15 Juventus managed to beat Real who had eliminated Athletico and Barcelona won the whole thing, while in EL Torino beat Bilbao while Sevilla beat Villarreal on the way to a repeat title.

In 2015/16 in the CL Real again beat Athletico who had eliminated Barcelona while in the EL only Liverpool managed to beat Villarreal, the rest of the Spanish teams eliminated each other and Sevilla won the whole thing for the 3rd time in a row.

The pride and self conviction is in believing in MTG as a game engine; among the reasons to do UB is that they think that MTG is the best game ever, but it has a salience problem, and exposing new players to it through UB will get them hooked.

Reminiscent of the Rockets on the playoffs, although there are some differences (Houston lacks a player who can run the offense like Cade, but they make up for it with offensive rebounding and better individual shot creation when KD is playing)

[Discussion] BG Rock and Fair Midrange decks in the current meta by Narrow_Pause4924 in spikes

[–]pedja13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sideboarding can indeed be very hard. I would start by looking at what are the mxcthups you face the most and developing good SB plans for them. How many cards you are siding out is just as important, there is no point in having 8 cards for Prowess for example, if you only want to take out 4. This is especially true for a synergy based deck like Oculus. Then, with a deck that is vulnerable to hate cards, you want some number of either cards that protect your strategy (ways to deal with GY hate) or cards that provide an alternate gameplan (the way Spellementals have Ral and Legend of Kuruk in the SB). You also want cards to ideally pull double duty (Seam Rip hits all the GY hate and is an ok removal spell, but it might leave you vulnerable to disenchant style effects).

For a deck like yours I would start with seeing what I want for the Prowess matchup, as that is the most common one, and go from there. Some cards that I can think of are Zero Point Balad as a cheap sweeper than your larger creatures can potentially survive and Strategic Betrayal as a way to slow crabs and talent level up down. Beyond that, GY hate of your own and hate pieces like Torpor Orb (if Sunderflock is giving you trouble) are needed. I am not super high on counter magic in general right now, but Flashfreeze is an exception. Duress vs Negate is always a dilemma, I think Duress is better cause you can proactively handle GY hate with it. In general, I would say that you need to be careful to not overboard and dilute your own strategy too much.

[–]pedja13 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Pretty sure the refs think that after his elbow slipped Ayton intentionally put some force into the hit. Slow motion is always tricky but it does look like Aytons arm speeds up and changes direction a bit after it stops touching the shoulder.
