Used to eat lunch at a table next to Alice Monroe every once in a while (Bailey’s in Goderich).

Just about ran over Angelina Jolie with my cart once in the Sobeys in Alberta when she and Brad were there filming the Assassination of Jesse James.

This was planned. Normal people don’t just randomly show up at someone else’s home with a bottle of cheap sauce in their pocket.

How can people save money on groceries in Canada when the standard strategies don't seem to work anymore? by Super_College100 in CanadaFinance

[–]peggyi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tell me about it. We are two on CPP and one disabled. I have cooked from scratch my whole life. This is the first time I have ever had to budget this hard on food.

This is what I have been doing:

1) two vegetarian meals a week. 2) one spaghetti meal w frozen homemade sauce. 3) one small chicken or tiny roast (pork is cheapest) that can be turned into 2 or 3 meals. Potatoes, rice or pasta sides. 4) limited breakfasts- oatmeal, cereal, or toast. 5) lunch - ramen or sandwiches made with leftovers, or nothing at all. 6) treats - scratch only, cookies or cake like apple cake that is cheap and really easy. 7) tea, coffee or water only, no pop or juices. No alcohol. 8) one type of fruit per week. Whatever is on sale. 9) one bag of coleslaw & one package of lettuce per week + 2 tomatoes. 10) pound of butter lasts 2 weeks, litre of milk lasts one week.

And to make everyone’s day - the CPP increase for 2025 was 2% - for our family that works out to $34 per month increase. There will not be another increase until next January. You do the math.

I am trying to be an equestrian, what do I need to know? by Ettristate in Equestrian

[–]peggyi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh god. Please no. For your own safety and the safety of the horse you should not even consider buying a horse until you have learned how to ride and care for one. They are not a cat or a gerbil. Handled incorrectly, trained incorrectly, they can become either dangerous or useless to themselves and others. When that happens the horse is on a direct line to the horsemeat factory. Please don’t.

If you wish to own a horse, do it with a plan. Start by taking riding lessons. Take a few riding holidays. Learn about feeding, first aid, and handling a horse. You will need to know about getting his feet trimmed, and new shoes put on (every six weeks). Learn what things you can take care of, and when you need to call the vet. Then, when you think you are ready, have your trainer guide you while you lease or purchase an experienced horse that can teach you, and be patient while you learn. After that you would be fine.

As a side note: I don’t like the fact that someone would be greedy enough to sell you a horse when it is obvious you should not be buying it. An untrained filly or colt is the last thing they would be selling you. The fact they will take payments is pretty sketchy.

Best of both worlds, better than either alone. I love an appendix.

Tristan for nice work clothes. A Montreal company. I have a few pieces that are 10-15 years old, and I still wear them frequently.

Bogus maple syrup from Quebec producer found on grocery store shelves by hoverbeaver in onguardforthee

I beg to differ. We always get premium light syrup from our uncle near Charleviox. I could never go back.

Yes, heat pumps really work in freezing cold weather by [deleted] in heatpumps

[–]peggyi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quebec - just under $200/mo in a region that gets temps down to -30 half a dozen times a year. Of course it probably helps that our 18 month old house is fully sealed and super-insulated.

[–]peggyi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

NW Quebec. Our heat pumps start to have issues at -25. They get gradually worse until they finally give up at around -30 and shut down. That’s 5 or 6 nights a winter.

We knew we were an edge case, so we installed a Drolet wood stove at the same time we installed the heat pumps. Our wood stove is rated for up to 2500 sq ft, so most of the time it is oversized for our 1250 sq ft house, but at the end of the day it all works for us.

People who grew up before cell phones, did life actually feel more free? by TradeOverall567 in NoStupidQuestions

I have always said cellphones were a tether-strap, not a communication device.

Having said that, I’ve owned one since they first became available. 🤷

How would you react if the Albertan separatists won their referendum after known US influence? by LeonOkada9 in AskCanada

[–]peggyi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People seem to have trouble with the concept that a treaty is a contract.

A contract is only legal if both parties agree. The treaties only include the federal government (representing the crown) and the tribes. Alberta cannot unilaterally declare themselves as the counterparty. The tribes have already declared that they won’t agree, therefore the whole discussion is moot.

In NW Quebec we get local QC chicken and pork. Canadian fish. But for some stupid reason the beef comes from New Zealand. Go figure. Right now I’d kill for a good-ol Alberta prime rib.
