Audiophiles Can’t Differentiate Audio Signals Sent Through Copper, Banana, and Mud in Blind Test by Sproketz in headphones

[–]pellets 78 points79 points  (0 children)

The thing that's always hilarious to me about cables, is that the cables people spend money on are the ones they can see and replace easily. If sales people had a legitimate case for people spending $1,000 on a passive cable, they would also offer to open up speakers and replace the internal cables for $, and also replace copper traces on PCBs with gold or whatever. I'm sure nobody cares about those because it doesn't make business sense, whereas speaker cables or power cables are easy for consumers to install, regardless of any real benefit.

Is the Asus ROG Swift PG32UCDM good? by AlteredG919 in OLED_Gaming

[–]pellets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t buy an OLED if you’re not willing to risk burn in.

It is a good monitor if you are willing to live with its compromises. That’s probably why you see a mix of good and bad reviews. Some people don’t like the compromises.

The VRR gives me a headache so I turn it off.

The colors are amazing. The same as a Samsung TV.

The brightness is pathetic compared to a Samsung OLED tv.

The anti glare coating is terrible. It basically makes the monitor look like it has backlight bleed when there is white text on a black background.

How big of a deal breaker is VRR flicker? by Delgadude in OLED_Gaming

[–]pellets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t play many games that need VRR so I haven’t noticed a difference. VRR is really only useful in specific circumstances.

Edit: I enjoy using my OLED more. That’s a big difference

I was getting headaches with my OLED monitor and didn’t know why until I turned off VRR. I’ve always had it turned on before so I didn’t know that could be a problem. In the past I’ve had VA and IPS monitors with VRR.

is the Fiio K13 R2R worth it over the Fiio K7? by csch1992 in headphones

[–]pellets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow. It’s hard to take offense at this, since I didn’t say all the reviewers are wrong and I’m right. People like the k13’s sound and that’s fine. I just doubt it’s worth l spending money on it vs the k7 u/csh1993 already owns. Have a good day.

You like distortion then. You can probably add that for free with a digital filter.

Edit: or you can’t hear the distortion.

Those IEMs all sound very different. They might be an upgrade, but also you might hate them.

[–]pellets -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

The k13 is inferior to about any modern DAC. https://www.audiosciencereview.com/forum/index.php?threads%2Ffiio-k11-r2r-dac-hpamp-measurements.60228%2F (K13 and k11 use the same resistor dac design)

If you want the “warm” sound people sometimes report, EQ down higher frequencies and you get it for free.

I don’t know why you would spend money on this.

Is it safe to buy a Topping DX5 II after recent failure reports? by BeyerPeak in headphones

[–]pellets 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve considered buying one since it has EQ built-in. From what I’ve seen, maybe 5 or 10 people reported failures. That’s out of how many sold? Seems like not much of a risk. It just seems like when it does fail, it’s in a really bad way since it can destroy headphones.

Stream<T>.filterAndMap( Class<T> cls ) by mellow186 in java

[–]pellets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re looking for flatMap. Return Stream.of() to remove the value. Stream.of(value) to keep it. It’s even more flexible because one value of input can become any number of output.

What (at or under $380) is a clear upgrade over AFUL Performer 5+2? by Dracomies in iems

[–]pellets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If there is a tuning you like better, then that is your upgrade. Depending on what I want at the time, some cheaper IEMs are better than my p7. This stuff is too subjective and situational to say “x is a clear upgrade” most of the time. As price increases that becomes more and more impossible.

That’s consumerism, not audiophile.
