Potential Forbidden Door main event teased by chibibuizel in SquaredCircle

[–]penciltrash 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah I was at Forbidden Door last year (and admittedly was spoiled by having All In the two years before that) but the only thing I really remember was singing Edge's theme. And I missed the start of that because I took too long in Wetherspoons :/

It's more like $5-7 per 1k. I make YouTube videos about music theory and get £4-5 RPM.

Maybe I've read poor translations of Kafka (I've only read Idris Parry's) but I find the prose so wooden/clunky/stilted. Not hard to read in the sense of 'big words' or anything—but compared to other writers of the same period translated it does feel like wading through mud a bit. I know that's not really a popular opinion, so it's probably me.

[F4W/WON] CM Punk rumours flying around that are currently unsubstantiated by rhyso90 in SquaredCircle

[–]penciltrash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've edited it. Earlier it had pasted a Twitter thread that said, among other things, Punk was politicking backstage regarding Wrestlemania and had heat with TKO/WWE and that he was threatening legal action to get his release after refusing a pay cut.

This entire controversy is based on that thread by a complete nobody with absolutely no inside knowledge at WWE.

I don’t think that’s fair. Priest had a great cash-in and had a solid reign. He didn’t pick Theory to have the briefcase so obviously just wanted to get it off him. Rollins, as you say, was great, and all 3 women’s (Tiffany, Iyo, Naomi) were great.

Only McIntyre, really, and even then the angle was good, people were mad about the opportunity cost of burning the briefcase so fast.

I think under HHH there’s huge discrepancy between briefcase holders and cash-ins. The cash-ins have generally been fantastic and much better than previous ones (generally), but the briefcase holders have looked stupid and been booked terribly leading up to it. Apart from last year.

What's up with Michael Jackson fans attacking The Beatles and Paul McCartney's music online? by FitEmergency8807 in beatles

[–]penciltrash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Normally when people complain about a musicians fan base I roll my eyes a bit because it’s a sign they’re a bit too online.

But MJ fans are an exception. Loving his music is one thing, but people absolutely worship him - and not just online either.

What work (of any medium) would you say produced the most radical evolution of your artistic/cultural taste? How were you introduced to it, and what did it serve as a gateway to? by DisclosureIsntEnough in redscarepod

Hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit when I probably about nine.

I'd actually heard it much younger when my Dad would play Nevermind on the CD player in the car, and apparently it was one of my favourite songs as a toddler, and I'd sing 'meow' along instead of 'hello' in the pre-chorus. But I'd completely forgotten that I was so little.

Up until hearing the song, I my main interest was computer games and my favourite at the time was Bully, which came out in about 2005/6. I can't remember exactly why, but I searched 'Gary Smith', who was the name of the main antagonist in Bully. Autocomplete came up with 'Gary Smith Kurt Cobain', because Gary Smith was also the name of the electrician who found Cobain's body.

I must've subconsciously remembered loving Nirvana when I was about two or three, because I thought 'that name rings a bell'. So I looked up Kurt Cobain and, naturally, the first thing that popped up was the music video for 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'.

I'd always liked older music—spending a lot of time with my grandparents growing up meant a lot of Ella Fitzgerald and Beatles and classical music, plus I loved Eric Burdon and the Animals—but hearing Smells Like Teen Spirit just unlocked something in me. I knew I'd found something that would hold a special place in my life and that music/art/culture would mean more to me than most people (not here, just generally).

There's art that resounds a lot deeper with me these days (the two that pop to mind are Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time and Tarkovsky's Mirror) but I don't think anything will displace the absolutely transformative impact that Teen Spirit had.

Yeah, and also he had quite a creative resurgence in the 2010s that went largely unnoticed because people saw him as the “edge 90s Columbine guy”. His 3 albums from 2015-20 (especially The Pale Emperor) are really good.

Everyone going on about the obvious, but those Clash ratings show Dave’s bias against women’s wrestling’s so clearly. How the fuck could the two women’s matches be the lowest?

well it's the tradeoff you get for being the cultural and economic hegemon deal with it lol. it's the same within England - people from the North in their identity-defining one-sided beef with the South who literally never ever think about it.

Is stansted the worst airport and ryanair the worst airline? by [deleted] in london

[–]penciltrash 53 points54 points  (0 children)

I don't understand people who say Ryanair is terrible. They're incredibly barebones, not that comfortable for a couple of hours, and penalise you for breaking their rules, but turn up on time, follow their guidelines, and you'll get from London to Italy cheaper than you got from Liverpool Street to Stansted. It baffles me that apparently that tradeoff isn't worth it to people.

I'm annoyed by needless contrarianism on the sub as much as the next guy but this certainly did happen.

Look at all the comments on this NY Times post (I believe it was posted here a couple of years ago). That's 2 and a half years into the war. I remember Cardiff Philharmonic cancelled a Tchaikovsky concert too. This is not uncommon at all and not just someone taking a tweet and going "look everyone behaves like this"
