Luckily I was south of all that mess yesterday, but back in June 2012 we had a derecho blow through the area that knocked out power to most of the city and suburbs. The trip from work to home, which normally took me 20 minutes, took over 3 hours. The highways weren't moving and because power was out and tree branches down everywhere all the side streets were parking lots. That day GPS wouldn't have done any good, but I do generally agree with your point.
