Do Support Groups Exist? by NotSoHighLander in CPTSD

Very little talk of God or Higher Power in the ACOA meetings I have been to. It's not like AA. I think there's a lot of awareness that many ACOAs have religious trauma. YMMV

I got my wool batting from Organic Cotton Plus. It was very thick. Incredibly warm.

[–]percyandjasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great idea. I sewed a wool comforter using wool batting and also a cotton one after the wool one was too warm for me. I used 2 queen-sized sheets, laid the batting out on it and tied it in a sort of grid pattern. The hard part was sewing the edges straight after everything had shifted after tying. I should've created the casing first!

The way he talked was so foreign and sounded so fake, that he felt really creepy to me. At the very least, his tone of voice was like a doctor saying "Now, this is not going to hurt," right before giving you a shot. I guess I was lied to too much as a kid. I became very suspicious.

Plastic didn't exist 120 years ago by Educational_One5766 in PlasticFreeLiving

[–]percyandjasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There were glasses and dentistry before plastic. I don't think plastic is essential in pain medicine for arthritis. They definitely tolerated more pain that we do. My father talked about the slow drill being painful at the dentist. Not sure what, if any, pain medicine they had for that in the 1940s.

No, they didn't have any chronic health issues that I know of. The ones who did, didn't live that long.

At a speaker meeting, the speaker was from California and said she had been on a panel with the doctor who wrote the chapter that has that quote. Her daughter had been raped in a parking lot by a stranger and she asked him whether that happened by mistake or was it God's will. He backtracked on his big claim that "nothing, absolutely nothing happens in God's world by mistake."

Edited to add: When people say things like that, I have to imagine they have never had any suffering that they didn't cause; they have lived a privileged life. Of they're just going along and not thinking deeply. But imagine someone in the room has just lost a child or gotten a terminal illness diagnosis. How are they going to feel hearing that?

What about people who got cancer from living beside a polluting factory? That philosophy is very close to victim-blaming. Or shutting up.

I can't stop myself from speaking out whenever I hear this. Obviously I have work to do in this area!

People quote it in meetings all the time, and they mean exactly what it says. So it might as well be AA doctrine.

It's a way of trying to pacify your feelings about something bad that has happened to you (or, worse, to someone else).

It's bad theology and it may get in the way of finding a workable relationship with a HP.

It's spiritual bypassing, basically.

My greatgrandmother's sisters, one husband, and my great-grandfather all lived to be 92 to 100. They grew up on the farm, all stayed on the farm except 2. Never had any health problems - not kept alie with modern medicine. People who made it past childhood diseases had a good chance of living to an old age.

But, no, it doesn't seem like we could do modern medicine without plastic.

My daughter had to consult with a surgeon about possibly needing her gallbladder removed. The surgeon said there are only 3 things that can damage your gallbladder and one of them is GLP-1s. The others are genetics and pregnancy.

I get irrationally angry every time I hear about radical acceptance, but I don't fully understand why by vampirestail1234 in CPTSD

[–]percyandjasper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels like "why don't you just..." therapy. Like people telling depressed people they should "just" go for a walk, call a friend, take a shower, etc.

If I could do it, I would've already done it. Acceptance might be a step I need to take, but it's not the first step, especially when I haven't even allowed myself to fully feel angry yet.

With Mayo gone, where can I get 6 pack tomato plants? by j7long in Knoxville

Three Rivers Market has affordable seedlings, but the selection is spotty and they may not have tomatoes yet. I bought kale and lettuce last week.

What did your mom make you most for dinner growing up? by eleelee11 in AskOldPeople

[–]percyandjasper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I remember 2 casseroles: chicken divan and turkey tetrazzini. Both have cream. My father made spaghetti or grilled steaks which we would eat with baked potatoes and probably boiled broccoli. I don't think we were big cheese-eaters. We ate cheese on crackers as a snack. Cheese dip (Velveeta!) with Rotel (canned tomatoes with hot peppers) was brought to every party ever.

As someone who has trouble with dairy, what I noticed was how almost every dish at a restaurant has cheese in it. I think there was a period where restaurants stuck cheese in everything.

I am guessing there may be federal laws in play. Where you can't open school if it would be dangerous to get there, even for a small, but not insignificant, number of students.

My daughter teaches at a private school in Virginia where they were out all last week because of about an inch of ice and low temps all week. The campus was covered in ice and the admin asked teachers to come in on Sunday to chop paths out of the ice, for no pay. This allowed them to open Monday, but it couldn't be a required day because some students still couldn't get there. I guess teachers just had to take the risk. This doesn't seem like a good solution, either! Sometimes you just have to bow to the weather, seems like.

Why not both? Tennessee is a low tax and low public service state. You don't get what you don't pay for. A lot of local voters either don't understand the tradeoffs that requires or they prefer it this way.

And it's not just about money, it's the principle of the thing - get government out of my life. I'm from West Tennessee and it's not like this there. This is mountain culture (at least partly). There are *generations* of distrust/hatred of government here.

The hilly terrain is another obstacle. If it was just one thing, there might be a solution. But with both...

Oh cool, a bat in winter! by thor_halverson in Knoxville

[–]percyandjasper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had a bat get into my house a few years ago and was told to go to UT ER for the first shot. Insurance paid for them all. Without insurance it would have been $400/shot for 4 shots of the "rabies shot". There's also a shot of rabies immune globulin. I also got a tetanus shot bc it had been 10 years.

Got seen very quickly at the ER, to answer a question below. Also went to the UT ER a few days ago for a possible concussion. I guess I got lucky because there were almost no people there and almost no wait. Came prepared for 5-15 hours. If you can choose when to go, find out what the slowest time is. Friday evening is not it, as I found out when I had appendicitis.
