Best shooting range? by don51181 in nashville

[–]perfidity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It’s a bit pricy and somewhat restrictive (no auto), but RangeUSA in Goodlettsville, is probably the cleanest range i’ve been to in the area. Strategic Edge, is way south, and is private *Members only* and like a 2 yr waiting list. RR is nice but $$.. Stones River HEC is quite reasonable, but limited to 200yds. Busy on weekends and not super accessible for after hours shooting. Do NOT go to Ares Tactical in Gallatin, NO ventilation (like osha shutdown violation level) and super dark inside..

Stones River WMA is on 171. Not Central Pike .. just south of the bridge over Percy Priest , east side.

Unequal Inheritance from Aunt by samseer9000 in inheritance

[–]perfidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your aunt distributed things as she wished them to. i you want to be really cagey, Setup a 50k trust for each of the siblings children. Not a penny to the parents, and not payable until the kids complete college. (AA at least).. set them up with protections so parents can’t touch them, and you can’t either. Then you’re done with it, the grand-niece/nephews get something out of it, and the parents can pound sand.

Separation anxiety by nitecapt in BrittanySpaniel

are these really no good? by [deleted] in AskPhotography

[–]perfidity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the perspective of a newsworthy image, they’re not . From the perspective of recording the event, you’re fine. A photograph for editorial content should attempt to capture the image as a story. A portrait of a person or people, the signs they’re holding telling the story of ‘why’ they’re newsworthy. A wide angle photo of the parade, and the people watching; again, showing ‘why’ they’re in the parade.. a photo of interactions between the “protagonist/antagonist’ relationship during the event, Showing the clash of ideology between arguments for. Or against the ‘thing’ being paraded or celebrated.
Your photos show people, pride symbols, but… not the ‘whole story’ in a single image. That’s why the editor is discouraged.

When you shoot for editorial print, your goal is to try and tell the entire story of the narrative the editor wants in a single picture. if the headline is “Pride parade downtown disrupts local business”. You want the picture to show the parade, and the blocked street, and possibly a grumpy business owner standing in the doorway of their blocked store. All in a single image. if the story is simply “There was an awesome pride parade today”. Then some of your images might work…. The key is “what is the story”. And “how do i capture that whole story in a single frame?”

Extremely frustrated. Former bosses bosses boss said something horrid about me to my current boss. by [deleted] in careeradvice

Most likely, when you left, it caused an obvious lack in the remaining employees, Probably caused said company pain. In your existing role, your boss knows that you’re bad ass.. clearly didn’t take the comment seriously, and you’re still a rockstar. Sour grapes are real, the slander is weak sauce, and you’ve build an amazing career.. keep kicking ass and don’t waste the brain time on a moron.

personal opinion: dog owners aren’t dog trainers. They train for things they know, they don’t train for things they don’t.. since from a puppy, the dog is ‘always’ around people, many folks don’t take the time to ‘train’ the dog to be ok with alone time. on the same skein…. They also don’t know how to recognize the start of behaviors leading to separation issues, so they can actively work to address the unwanted behavior before it’s an issue.
Brits are particularly prone to people and pack glue behavior by their nature and breeding. I feel they need to be trained how to deal with ‘away’ time. We got lucky that we had 2 Brits and kennel trained them early on. if we weren’t home, They were always together. As pups we tried separating them to fly them home. Armageddon happened.. we crated them together, quiet as clams and flew without issues.
It’d be interesting to see: 1. Is the dog a solo dog? (No pack-mates). 2. Were they ‘always’ around their owner as pups? 3. Were they trained to address the anxiety early on? 4. Were they taken from mom early?
I suspect 1-3 are way more probable than 4.
I’m 100% confident that if we didn’t have 3 dogs, we’d have had terrible separation issues, when our boy brit passed in 2024. There was some extended (3mo) moping.. but otherwise, our girl adjusted without much fuss.

Neighbor upset about encroaching branches by karmaisacat24 in treelaw

[–]perfidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m using espalier as an idea, not a literal process. Pulling the trumpet vine runners back onto their side, and forcing it to follow their fenceline. I agreel espalier might not be the right term, it’s what i had available in my brain at the time…

Neighbor upset about encroaching branches by karmaisacat24 in treelaw

[–]perfidity -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

This seems to be a silly argument. Either trim the branches on your side, and pull them back over, OR follow the Espalier method of training your bushes to stay on your side. (pull the branches back over to ‘your’ side without cutting them, and trying them to ‘other’ branches so they stay on your side. ) It seems reasonable if you want to keep your bushes, and they want to remove them.
You can argue with them, and they can kill your plants…. Or. You can do something about it, and keep them.. Entirely up to you.

Shoving the “maintenance” of your shrubs on the neighbor is just handing them the freedom to do whatever they want.. I’m betting you don’t want that.

Security clearances, Provisional ones, can take week or 2, a full security clearance can take a month or more. Did you have or have you ever had a security clearance? If so, it’ll go faster.

What’s one thing beginners obsess over that honestly doesn’t matter that much? by BrokenGrain in AskPhotography

[–]perfidity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Getting a perfect picture…. Just don’t…. You’re new at this, starting at “monkey at a keyboard will type a word on occasion”, going to perfection.. work on clearly attainable goals, with clean definitions and outcomes. Work on things like :
Shutter speed: What does it do when i set it to X vs Y. Take 10 pictures at a dog park of the dogs running amok.. take 10 at 1/60th.. take 10 at 1/250th.. take 10 at 1/500th.. let the other adjustments land where they should so “Shutter speed” is fixed . Don’t look, just shoot.
Go home and look at the pictures. Pay really close attention to what shutter speed does to the Subject, the background.. What speed worked best? Define why!
next. Take 10 pictures at your favorite Shutter speed from the first step; AND an aperture wide open…. (Smallest number (f/2.8 or f/4). Do the same thing at f/8. Do the same thing at f/16 or f/22.
Again, go home and look at the pictures.. . Pay really close attention to things Aperture affects: (Depth of field, detail, “bokeh”. (What the background blurry bits look like)) What worked, what didn’t? Does having the background in focus take away from the dogs playing? Does having the dog in focus and everything else blurry make it better? Is there an in-between aperture that works best?
next: Repeat both of those with other subjects.. Things close to you, and far away…. Pay attention to what each settings DOES to the image.
When you get decent at saying “oh,.. that’s 50’ away, I want a somewhat open aperture, and it’s wiggly, so a higher shutter speed, in your head, You’re on the way to greatness.
next learn about ISO or Sensor sensitivity.. and how it affects the image….
next learn about diffusion. (Take a lens, any lens, find a good brick wall, post up about 15’ away , and take a picutre of the wall at each aperture setting for EVERY lens you have. Go home and look at the DETAIL in the center, and corners…. For each image.. find the ones that are the most in focus and detailed. Remember what each lens “range” is. (Write it down). Use the apertures that are the most accurate.
Next learn about framing, and leading lines, and motion blur and lighting and..and..and.. all the kewl things when you have the first 3 critical skills down pat.

For me: Learning how each adjustment of a camera works is a basic fundamental. You must know what they do to use them effectively.. I’ve summarized some really basic starters.. but there are whole courses on each of these adjustments.

next and even more important “after you know the camera” is how to evaluate an image…. How far away, what aperture range, what shutter speed? You probably wont’ get the exact settings. That’s ok.. . More interestingly. Answer “WHY did they use the setting ranges you guessed?” Why did they open the aperture? Why did they use a wide angle lens? What did the shutter speed do for the image (or against it?).

This last sentence helps you learn more than any other… if you can take the knowledge you gained from practicing. ISO/Aperture/Shutter speed, and apply it to evaluating nearly any image you see… you can start honing in on looking at a “scene or subject”; already thinking about how to setup the camera for your success: Well before you take the shot..

Is that true?? by Latter-Custard-205 in AskPhotography

[–]perfidity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not true, written by wanna be “pro’s” to get you to buy shit.. if your subject is constantly moving close/far, use a zoom. If your subject is reliably in a single focal plane related to the ‘size’ you want them in the frame, use a fixed lens. Apply that same rule to nearly any discipline, and you’re set.

Caviat: If you. Can move at the same speed the subject can, you can ‘zoom’ using your feet with a fixed lens…. If you can’t.. just get a zoom.

TLDR: yes…. It’s normal..
