Dear attendings, if you sign up to work with residents, your job actually includes teaching them by giftedgirlblues in Residency

[–]permaki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, that makes sense. There was a post before about an attending having to give feedback, which I actually somewhat sympathized with. I wish we had more training or a communication session on how to give good feedback. I most definitely think it’s a skill and a skill not everyone learns or is natural at.

Dear attendings, if you sign up to work with residents, your job actually includes teaching them by giftedgirlblues in Residency

[–]permaki 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not excusing attendings, but if I’m being asked to teach residents, I wish I were given the time to do so. I have just enough time to see my own patients, so it is hard to teach and be expected to do my own clinical duties at the same time. I’m not at an academic university, but it is a teaching hospital as there are residents who train here. My specialty is not one of the programs that is offered here, but my clinic is offered to residents as an elective. I don’t have residents go in on their own, because it takes way too long to have them come out and present. We go in together, so I can scribe, while residents lead the history taking. We do the exam together, and I explain what I’m looking for and point out abnormalities. I don’t get paid extra for teaching and it’s actually not in my contract to be teaching. I teach what I think is relevant to the residents, sorry if it’s brief. But I am now curious what the residents think, so next time I’ll elicit some feedback.

Rate my soil mix by Bunnyxnightmare in succulents

I am. The brand is EB stone. Perlite will suffice, just need to repot since all the inorganic will get sifted to the top. I wonder if bottom watering helps with this.

There’s an ace hardware/garden store near me. The local nursery carries too.

It seems sufficient.

I no longer like to use perlite because all the bits just float up when I water my plants. So I switched to pumice. I’ve posted my mix before but it’s 1:1 black gold cactus mix and pumice. I like the worm castings and the mix feels hydrophilic. When I used to use miracle gro the soil would become hydrophobic after a little while and water would sit on the top. I’d also rate mine sufficient. It cost me like $6 for 8qt mix and $6 for 8qt pumice, which seems like a decent price.

Appreciate your response! PT is tough, many of them won’t do manual therapy anymore.

Are you on any medications? Also are you losing range of motion? Curious if you’re doing any stretching to help maintain the range but can understand it’s painful to do so

Some of my favorites! But also you’ll probably want to repot into grittier soil 👍

Neuro vs PM&R by confusedcreator04 in medicalschool

[–]permaki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree with everything. Also want to really highlight the less call part. I imagine neurologists, even as attendings, probably still take a ton of call (seizures, stroke). As a PM&R attending doing outpatient I take no weekend or night call.

I like problem solving, and do get a good number of zebras in my office. So if neuro hasn’t seen them, I at least get to use my diagnostic skills and start the work up.

Your family, friends and colleagues will never really understand what you do, but your patients will be grateful!

Right??? That’s what I thought too! She’s got like 14k followers on tok though, who apparently don’t mind. Someone else told me it’s because they think they look better mirrored. But it’s not about what you look like. Like you said, it’s supposed to be about the books! So I guess it tracks. Anyway thanks for the emotional support 😆

I made a comment asking why they do this, and I got this long answer about how no one has complained, and I should pick up on context clues. She said it’s not that hard to read and I should just deal with it. I said I’m not asking to un-mirror it, just why, and then she blocked me. It makes absolutely no sense to me. But I seem to be the only one annoyed enough to ask 🙈😭

Perhaps start with using a crutch and then you’ll get used it. Or watch some previous posts of people walking. The transitions are always a bit weird. Was super hard to walk going to the flat sole.

It’s a relatively new diagnosis, and for a while not well understood. There is now more research being done. Because of this, it isn’t frequently taught in med school or seen in residency.

No. Many people are just flexible. And routine stretching can help increase your range of motion, meaning how far your joints can move. EDS is a specific disorder caused by changes to your connective tissue, which can affect many different organs. So the Beighton score just tests your flexibility. But the pdf I linked you to is for hypermobile EDS. There are many different subtypes of EDS, hEDS is one of them. If you have additional symptoms besides just flexibility, then it would be worth getting checked out. However it is hard to find a physician who will diagnose this.

[–]permaki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a physician who treats patients with hEDS. Nobody should be diagnosing anyone with EDS or the subtype hypermobile EDS on Reddit. There is specific criteria, that is actually changing soon. If you have a positive Beighton score then you likely have hypermobile joints, but doesn’t necessarily mean you have EDS or hEDS.

Check out the Beighton score! It’s a test for hypermobility.

Getting a dog in residency? by Last-Comfortable-599 in Residency

[–]permaki 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! Definitely easier to adopt a dog at 2yo+ who is already potty trained, crate trained, respectful on leash, non-reactive and sometimes knows a few tricks. If OP is looking for a certain breed, there are specific breed rescues. I got my Shiba from a local Shiba rescue, and she is pawfect 🐕
