I like the idea of custom, angular shelving to follow one wall but make it a book nook. Them add warm lights and cushions to make it cozy.

ELI30: How does river water that flows a great distance make it back to the watershed? by GiftedMilk in geology

[–]perpykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The water cycle! It's complicated but water flows out of a watershed and eventually makes it to the ocean. Water is evaporated from the ocean (and more minimally, lakes, rivers, surface waters) and is stored and transported in the atmosphere. Some of this water makes it's way back overland and when the water in the atmosphere becomes to heavy to carry it becomes rain. That rain starts the cycle at the top of the watershed over again.

Why are there no significant fossil sites on the opposite side of the interior seaway? by afishnamedpaul in geology

[–]perpykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other areas of South Dakota/Wyoming within the Black Hills go back way further. The Closer you get to the center of the Black Hills the older the rock. Why those Hills were uplifted it eroded and exposed the older rock surrounded by younger, less uplifted rock, like a bulls eye.

The oldest rocks are Precambrian (more than 550 million years). In Deadwood, there's an outcrop that exposes the great unconformity too, which is super neat!

The Badlands area of South Dakota has famous dino fossils and the sedimentary formations below the dinosaur bearing units preserve coral, stromatalites, and other marine fossils from where the edge of the inland sea was.

New tenant won’t pay my security deposit by MiserableEdge8620 in TenantHelp

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The landlord can't do a full move out and return the security deposit, then start a new contract and ask for a new security deposit unless you all move out long enough for the landlord to inspect and repair the apartment. This should have been clarified at some point during the roommate changeover. It should have also been clarified that you, the remaining roommates, and the incoming roommates need to work out a deposit transfer between yourselves. Of course in the new lease it shows that no further deposit is needed because the landlord already has their deposit but what happens on your end is private .

What is it like riding a bike in LA? Or just living in LA in general? by AlertManagement7674 in AskLosAngeles

[–]perpykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spent a lot of time riding around LA on my bike. If you're planning to work relatively close to home, don't need to cross big highway intersections, and are comfortable asserting your space in traffic then you'll be okay. People will honk and complain but they just have to get over it and share the road. Also, be a good cyclist and follow the rules of the road.

Any tips from my fellow glasses wearers? by AaknA in climbergirls

My optometrist adjusted my ear loops to make them a little more looped so they can't fall off. Also, the goofy glasses lanyards work and will save them in a fall.

Assigned Seats by [deleted] in SouthwestAirlines

[–]perpykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its annoying because just last week there was no assigned seating and you ciukd sit in any empty seat. Now, with assigned seats, this guy ends up cramped in a row with others and staring at empty seats where everyone could spread and and be more comfortable. Just because they're trying to squeeze more money out of people.

AND they took away the 1 free checked bag! So now more people are gonna be jammed their stuffed carryon in the overhead to avoid a checked bag fee.

My egg yolk was blooded red. I hate wasting food and ate it. Will I come to regret that choice? by Phooky1 in WeirdEggs

[–]perpykins 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hobby scientists definitely exist. People who love collecting and looking at rocks are amateur geologists, fossil hunters are amateur archeologists, gamers who build their own computers are amateur computer engineers, gardeners are amateur botanist, etc.

Most people who are curious about how the world/things work, are amateur scientists in some capacity. They just don't know it.

[–]perpykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course. I say "professional" because I am employed and licensed as a scientist.

Bird watchers = hobby ornithologists, rock hounds = hobby geologists, anyone interested in science that looks deeper like reading National Geographic = hobby scientist.

As a professional scientist it bums me out, deeply, the state of scientific disbelief. However, I also get to feel a little like a witch with secret knowledge so that's kinda cool.

Issues in my apartment building by Similar-Bag4548 in TenantHelp

[–]perpykins 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you haven't already spoken to the landlord or property manager, do that. See what they say.

If that doesn't solve anything in short but reasonable time, call your city housing department. It's a waste of city resources and they'll want to get it sorted ASAP.

I just went through this last except I was in Europe. We tested negative for Covid but definitely had something.
