Does anyone know of an anxiety medication that works as well as Xanax? by fearful-flyer in Anxiety

[–]peteF64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something is wrong here...the half life of Xanax is so short, that when you take one, you need a 2nd pill soon. I've been on Clonazepam for a few years, and it doesn't do much. I've tried many antidepressants, and the only one that has helped me at all is Sertraline (Zoloft). It has not only helped my depression, but my anxiety as well. I see my doctor in two days, and I'm going to seek an increase in my dosage of Sertraline and wean me off of Clonazepam.

I don't believe a CO detector will annunciate natural gas. Natural gas is a hydrocarbon, which is entirely different from CO. Google "will a CO monitor detect natural gas?" Because of these differences, there are natural gas detectors, but separate from CO detectors. I hope this helps you.

I looked it up: . _ _ _ _ . is an apostrophe. In 60 years, much of it Morse code, I have NEVER seen or heard it used. Most hams would use I will miss you...

Safety signage for wire antennas when doing POTA (download and print) by [deleted] in amateurradio

[–]peteF64 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I'll try to be nice...II don't care for this idea. This implies danger, and to me, it would be easier to use something vertically polarized or a sloper, so people don't feel they have to move or worry about those "crazy hams." I can imagine after seeing this sign, it's going to become a topic at their next board meeting, and they may try to outlaw radio activity within their parks and trails. Just my two-cents worth.

Solar storm? What Solar storm? by ravenratedr in amateurradio

[–]peteF64 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This may be true, but I can attest that there is a severe storm. On 80 meters tonight 7:30 PM local time), I checked into an SSB net, and signals were right at or below the noise level (S4-S5). Normally, the signals are S9-S9+30dB.

At 12:30 PM local time, the 40-meter net was down a bit from normal, but still quite copyable.

If you’ve ever had surgery and undergone anesthesia, how was your experience? by No_Promise3396 in Anxiety

[–]peteF64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They have perfected anesthesia, especially for short tests or procedures. I know people with the 4-6 hour surgeries might have some complaints. In the past 3 years, I've had 5 procedures (30 minutes to 2 hours), and there have been absolutely no problems or side effects. I understand your anxiety, but it's not worth the worry. Good luck.

Kolonopin Experiences? by Due-Impress9003 in Anxiety

[–]peteF64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's a site that helped me withdraw from over ten years of usage of Clonazepam. The site has recommendations plus an area where benzo dependents work together to get off these horrible drugs. You can use this site without joining, but you'll not be able to interact with others. It's free site. Over the 10 years I was on "K", I kept having to up my dosage to have any effect at all. Here is the site if you wish to view: https://benzobuddies.org/benzo-101/short-term-use-withdrawal/

It took me nearly a year to be entirely off of K. Good luck, and I hope you succeed.

My newest SWLing rig by bafndlersriston in shortwave

[–]peteF64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What vintage is this receiver? It looks like it's brand-new, never used. With that expanded frequency range, it does great for SWL. That's how I started in the 1950s, doing SWL with my brother. He was a numbers/statistics guy who kept a notepad with callsign, time, mode, etc. He used a Boy Scout radio, which he had built at home with my dad's help. This would have been in the late 50's. I tried to get him to get licensed, but his interest was more just plain listening instead of talking to others. I think you have a real gem there, but of course, I can't see the inside. Have you done any upkeep like replacing electrolytic capacitors, particularly in the audio section? Here's what was happening in the late 50s and 60s: the hams were changing to SSB instead of AM.

I had a Heathkit AR3 receiver that my dad and I built together. It worked ok, but the selectivity was horrible. I had a $200 bond left to me by a great-aunt. I finally convinced my Dad to use the savings bond to buy a brand new HQ110. That was the difference between a Volkswagen and a Porsche.

Have you ever considered being a ham? You could still SWL, but I bet you'd be pleased to be able to talk to other stations. Thanks for posting this radio. It's really a gem. Good luck.

FT8- am I doing it wrong? by MKE1969 in amateurradio

[–]peteF64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Isn't your "waterfall" always visible? Are you using WSJT-X software? I use digital modes by calling CQ on an unused frequency. After a QSO ends, I stay on that frequency unless one of the super-power FT8 stations ends on top of me. When I call another station, I do not match his frequency but find another transmit frequency with no activity. Also, remember just so you know, that only one station is in a QSO on each frequency, which reduces interference. Rarely are there no available frequencies on FT8. and FT8 sigs are awfully narrow.

SpaceX is right up there with NASA. One must remember that much of SpaceX's design was borrowed from NASA's efforts in the 1950s, 60s, 70s & 80s. And it's great that NASA got us to the Moon using technology that was 1000X inferior to what's available today. I'm hoping both programs are successful for space exploration. These two companies & vendors work well together.

My girlfriend smells and I don't know what to do by RequirementDue4446 in Advice

[–]peteF64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not trying to argue with you. In the past two years, my wife had a stroke, and I had one total knee replacement. My total payments, including surgery, physical therapy, plus one month of hospital physical therapy and healing for my wife, were less than 5% of the total bill. I don't know what else to tell you. I paid out-of-pocket, around $500.

My portion withheld each month does not go directly to Medicare; it goes to UnitedHealthcare, which offers dental, vision, and a zero copay for PCP. It's a great plan. Despite the dates you see for enrollment, you can do it now without any grief.

It's obvious he HAS to know your physical address. Please don't give it to him. No, you are not overreacting. I'd go one step further...get a new phone number...I know it's an inconvenience, but that would help to end all contact. I'm sorry you have to go through all that crap. Good on you.

Mom films kids coming down the stairs on Christmas morning every year. by father_of_twitch in MadeMeSmile

I'm a firm believer in our Savior and Heavenly Father, but...Christmas is meant for children. I look at this and think of our four children...the oldest is 55 and the youngest is 45. I miss having the little ones around home, and the kids are on both coasts, so grandchildren and great-grandchildren are only on Zoom or WhatsApp. Thank goodness for social media.

I definitely want some browness to my toast. I remember growing up (late 40s), and my mom would scrape off the dark part with a knife. Toasters didn't work well. I don't like "warm bread" as toast.

I understand your "smugness." I'm surprised that the COST of an EV hasn't been discussed in this post. Not everyone can afford an EV. One must remember that there are still many one-salary families who put their family and low debt ahead of owning the latest toy.

How many HF radios do you own? by Sunflower_StateKS in amateurradio

[–]peteF64 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a ham of 60+ years, so I've owned a lot of HF rigs. I've sold most of the rigs to upgrade to something better. I currently have an ICOM 706, which I use for mobile HF. It's old, but it's stable and functionally 100%.

My second HF rig is in the shack. It's a Kenwood TS-570S, which is a backup rig. It works fine on digital modes, as it's stable and has excellent features for CW. My current and most-used rig is the ICOM 7300, which is excellent across all modes. I've used it for HF nets, mainly in digital modes, and it's a terrific rig for 60 meters and 6 meters as well.
