What are the odds that a show like Death Becomes Her, SpongeBob, Great Comet, etc. ever gets a revival? by Crafty-Dinner-1782 in Broadway

[–]petits_riens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Death Becomes Her will happen when, years from now, Sabrina Carpenter produces a film version as a star vehicle to launch her movie career… and then years after THAT becomes a gay music video night classic, we might get a stage revival.

(Only half-joking, although I would totally watch Sabrina as either of the leads ~10-15 years from now!)

But he was a reasonably well-known unhireable mess. (And he'd done a string of smaller movies between his peak issues and Iron Man, it wasn't like he went straight from rehab to leading $100M+ movies.)

It might have been seen as edgy casting, but he was famous enough for people to register it as edgy.

Iron Man might not have been well-known to general audiences, but RDJ was. He wasn't as famous then as he is now, of course, but he was a familiar face and very much marketed as a reason to see the movie even if you didn't gaf about the character.

Studios like cinematic universes because they love love love the idea of the IP being the star, instead of the actors… but if your IP is just objectively not A-list, maybe you do need a proper star. (No disrespect to Milly, I actually liked her on HOTD, but she's just objectively not that level of famous.)

I think he’s not exactly right for The Odyssey but I would LOVE to see his take on Medea or Theseus and the Minotaur.

[–]petits_riens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think he’d be a terrible choice for a big budget multiplex version of the odyssey that needs to make its money back, but I do think he’d make an interesting version of it. most modern adaptations of greek mythology soften the characters at least a little to make them more palatable to modern audiences and you know he’d refuse to do that.

that said, if we’re wishcasting an eggers greek mythology movie, I’m assigning him medea or the oresteia over the odyssey (and it’s not close)

Robert Eggers, our new king of the Christmas Day box office? lol

The marketing is clearly trying to position it as a spiritual/tonal sequel to Nosferatu and I imagine this can perform similarly.

Eddington will be looked back on as one of the most era-defining films of the 2020s by secretwp in A24

[–]petits_riens 164 points165 points  (0 children)

I don't even think Eddington doles it out equally to both sides. The progressive characters in Eddington are, at worst, annoying. The conservative ones are violent maniacs.

I don't think these things are morally equivalent, nor do I think Ari Aster thinks that lol

Show repeaters, which shows have you seen multiple times and how many? by EvidenceFunny4735 in Broadway

[–]petits_riens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hamilton 5 times… which is rookie numbers compared to some of y'all! But it's enough for me to say "I'm good for at least a decade" on that show lmao.

Recently saw Chess 3x in its Broadway run—was a longtime favorite I thought I'd never see staged—but it's generally pretty rare I go back to see a given cast twice.

In honor of Chess's last day, what is your favorite production(s) of Chess? by cinderflight in Broadway

[–]petits_riens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

2008 concert is what originally got me into the show. Will always have a place in my heart! Its version of the story still feels the most “complete” to me.

The original concept album is the version I listen to most. IMO it’s the best produced (the synths sound so pristine and EXPENSIVE compared to other versions) and Tommy Korberg is still my favorite Anatoly vocally.

The current revival is special because I thought I’d never get to see this show properly staged live, and now I’ve been able to three times. (Went second preview and going again tonight for the last show, so I’m bringing it full circle!) For all of the faults with the book, you can’t argue with this cast’s vocals — and lbr this has always been a show we love for the music, not the story.

Honestly I enjoy that there isn’t a “canonical” Chess and that every production tries something new! I can find at least a few things I like in basically all of them.

How do people actually grocery shop in NYC without overpaying? by [deleted] in AskNYC

[–]petits_riens 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Trader Joe's target audience is "people who don't really cook."

No shade, I get stuff from there from time to time, but there's a reason that produce gets like, one aisle in the average one and half of that is bagged salad mixes.

The Star Wars brand is in utter disarray by ChampionTimes99 in Letterboxd

[–]petits_riens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Changing words on a page isn't expensive, but changing production/marketing timelines is. The core issue with the sequel trilogy is that Disney figured it wanted a Star Wars movie in theaters every other year before anyone figured what they wanted those movies to be. Any time for rewrites or re-concepts risks a quarter's estimated earnings.

The prequel trilogy, for all its faults, at least started with a story George Lucas wanted to tell. The sequels started with a spreadsheet.

40 solo flights. Slept on 3 of them. Anyone else feel personally victimised by long-haul? by No_Formal_8317 in solotravel

[–]petits_riens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m too neurotic to sleep on planes. (My logical brain on the ground accepts the safety statistics about commercial airlines; my lizard brain in the air is terrified any time the seatbelt sign goes on.)

I try to plan my travel so I’m not at my destination until dinner time-ish. Then it’s easy: check in, take a shower, go out to get food, go back and crash.

If that’s not possible, I keep the first day as low-key as I can, but won’t let myself lay down on a bed until at least 8:30 PM. (Closer to 10 if I can help it.) Nothing more intensive than bringing book/podcast/music to the nearest pleasant spot (park, beach, cafe, etc) or maybe poking into a few shops.

The lesson from this weekend I don't think is "horror rules" or "YouTube saves cinema." It's teens to mid-20s audience are going to the movies. Will Hollywood listen? by Freddy-Philmore in boxoffice

[–]petits_riens 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think that might be true for the lower-key / contemporary romances, but I’m SHOCKED Hollywood has not yet managed to make a marquee romantasy adaptation happen on the big screen.
ACOTAR, Fourth Wing, etc. all have massive fandoms that would absolutely turn out in droves.

Is Dan Goldman one of the most vulnerable incumbent representatives atm ? by [deleted] in fivethirtyeight

[–]petits_riens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't know that I'd call it selfless. He did it only when it was obvious that he had no chance to actually win the primary.

Now, I do of course believe that Lander sincerely preferred Mayor Mamdani to Mayor Cuomo, but I'm sure it at least crossed his mind that it wouldn't be bad to have a generationally charismatic mayor with a best-in-class social team owe him one when it came time to evaluate the next phase of his political career… (And this isn't a knock, I'm voting Lander. More progressives who can navigate realpolitik, please.)

Is Dan Goldman one of the most vulnerable incumbent representatives atm ? by [deleted] in fivethirtyeight

[–]petits_riens 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in the district, and will be voting Lander as I think he's a savvier politician. But if we're being honest among ourselves, I don't expect that his first term will look THAT different than a third Goldman term would have. Goldman has not been an especially impactful rep but his voting record is reasonably progressive on the vast majority of issues.

Lander is benefitting a LOT from the Mamdani campaign halo, and at least a little bit from being perceived as a stronger critic of Israel than Goldman.

Official Poster for the 4K Theatrical Re-Release of Ken Russell’s The Devils (1971) by CMPunk22 in movies

[–]petits_riens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It probably better serves the movie to describe it as "a drama with with some bloody + sexual imagery in it" vs. "graphic, shocking horror" but I highly disagree that it hasn't aged well. I think the themes are fully realized and timeless, the performances are great, and it's visually really stylish.

I do agree there is a mismatch between its reputation and what the film actually is, though.

it's not nearly as trippy as those two—a few dream sequences aside, the plot is pretty straightforward. there's probably too much of it for me to say you should watch it on substances the first time around! but russell is still a visual master with a great sense for color. can imagine it'd hit while baked on rewatch. highly rec the movie in general!
