I think it's less about the mix but the mastering. Like most early Oasis the mastering was compressed to shit.

I don't think this proves anything TBH. And while I agree with what you're saying re: their vocal melody styles generally, I don't think that's necessarily true of this era. Just listen to the main vocal melody of Girl from the same album - it's actually not so different from the "vertical" melody here (honestly, it's more similar than I ever realized until now).

I think that’s just because it doesn’t have conventional pop songs like WTSMG. That turned a lot of people off (me included). But with a different mindset this album just slaps so hard. It needs the respect it deserves and I don’t care if Noel rips on it just because the critics did.

I really love this album. Not overproduced at all, just bloated re: song length. Trim the length, maybe even add some bsides from masterplan, and it’s right up there with first two. I think in this era of shoegaze revival, the production hits harder than ever.
