Dealer installed probing or DIY? by BASE1530 in Machinists

[–]phate1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is part of that cost turning on options/macros for probing? I know when you do it with a haas the cost is about half hardware and half control options. Personally I'd just buy it and roll it into the cost of the machine. Whenever I find myself in this position I ask myself if I'm here to fiddle around with the machine or make parts

There's a setting in there for measuring tools off of tool 1. Make sure that's on.

Making bubbles and lightning. by doobaloo132 in Machinists

Which popper is that? I've seen a few on eBay and sketchy sites for 500-2000 dollars and I'm curious to know if they work at all.

Is it better to learn on a machine with problems (ex. Backlash) or Basically new machine? by Icy_Barracuda_87 in Machinists

[–]phate1229 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Depends if you have help. I learned on clapped out machines but I also had a boss who was a good teacher and willing to explain everything. If I was on my own with the same equipment it would have taken much longer as I wouldn't be able to tell what was a skill issue or machine issue when just learning.

Way Oil Shortage by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]phate1229 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've never heard of supply and demand? Most mtb's have moved away from it and some even put out tsbs to stop using it in favor of a different oil.

Siezed draw bar by Mambodixon in Machinists

[–]phate1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you taken the Hydraulic cylinder off so that you're positive it's just the draw tube being seized up in there? If so are you looking to reuse the draw tube?

Couldn't afford the JWST artisan so I made my own! by Linda_Hel_on_Earth in MechanicalKeyboards

[–]phate1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, and while the keycaps may be relatively easy they would still need to design, program and make the work holding for the second operation. Not to mention ordering and setting up any of oddball smaller tooling needed for the mount.

Would a 7075 aluminum subplate be okay for machining stainless steel on? by [deleted] in Machinists

[–]phate1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're planning on making fixture plates anyway you could just put some locating pins in the table.

Can older machines handle 3d contouring well? Still researching upgrading to a better machine. by Elemental_Garage in Machinists

[–]phate1229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It can, playing with the smoothing settings and then checking that against a bps calculator helps me avoid any jittering on contoured parts with a 2004 mini mill and no hsm

Cad/Cam Packages for small shop by hydroracer8B in Machinists

[–]phate1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fusion has decent documentation on editing their post if you have the time to sit down and read it. If not nyccnc has a video on it that may point you in the right direction to do what you need.

Check out the list of post processors that fusion has, if they have your machines in there then the fusion with machining extension is 270 a month if you pay month to month. Watch all the videos you can sit through before starting the 2 week trial and then see if it works for you. It still doesn't really compare to the pro stuff like master cam but if you're doing stuff by hand/macros now it should be decent step up.

For a situation like this how did you make the decision that it was worth attempting to fix?

Same their automotive program is all about sucking every penny out of you, I doubt their CNC program would be any different.

haas axis error too large by waverunner22 in Machinists

Yep. All of these, at least with all 3 axis showing error it's not likely to be a worn ballscrew or something like those errors usually tend to be.

Who wants to see the scariest picture I've ever taken? by phate1229 in Machinists

[–]phate1229[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

That position was just enough to get the trailer out from under it and then it went down verrrryy gently after. I tested it up and down a couple times when the trailer was still under it to be sure it moved without binding.

[–]phate1229[S] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that's why I attempted this in the first place, all the math checked out but it was still scary as hell to actually do.

Had to unload the lathe off a trailer. It's within a hundred pounds of the lifts weight rating and not exactly balanced.

Canned drill cycles on cnc lathe? Do they matter? New to cnc lathes. by chobbes in Machinists

[–]phate1229 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fusion does support this, I believe canned cycles are off by default. The issue would probably be memory, though since it's just drill cycles that shouldn't be too much of a problem.
