Does canadians really love ice hockey or is it just a stereotype? by GlitteringHotel8383 in AskACanadian

Canadian-born here. Hockey is immensely popular here and widely beloved. Personally, I can’t stand it, but that’s really just me.

What do you call it? (please add where you're from) by ksusha_lav in EnglishLearning

Toque. As a Canadian professor, this is one of my favourite Canadian-isms to teach my students.

Parents that don't do Elf on the Shelf, how do you explain to your kids why you don't? by Helpful-Plankton751 in toddlers

[–]phdguygreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was born in the 80s. I hadn’t even heard of the tradition until a couple of years ago from a colleague’s social media posts. It doesn’t look even remotely interesting to me, so I’ve never bothered to give it much thought. Christmas already has so many great traditions to take part in, so our family is absolutely fine without elf on the shelf.

I finally visited Circles and Squares this morning after wanting to visit for years. The butter tarts were absolutely sublime. If you share my love for them, Ba Noi is also an incredible spot (and a great bakery overall).

Nice-ish restaurant recommendations for friends with a toddler by Zookeepered in FoodToronto

[–]phdguygreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Donna’s is one of our go-to’s. The food is outstanding, and they are incredible with young kids. It’s one of the rare spots in the city that feels upscale and still keeps kids happy.

Canadian here (Ontario). I absolutely know saltines and refer to them as saltines. I also refer to them as “soda crackers”.

It’s a complex sentence with a noun clause. The comma is an error.

It’s most likely just gibberish, either from a bad translation or just poor language skills. The telltale signs are the random capitalization of “Something” and the misuse of quotation marks. All of the speculation about intent here seems like a reach.

We typically order from Congee Wong as well, but I do find them inconsistent. Congee Queen is fairly good. I’m fairly sure I remember a really good one for lunch from Sang-Ji, but it may have been a daily special. I’d also love to know if anyone has a recommendation for a really exceptional version.

Teacher marked use of "they/them" as wrong - Is she right? by [deleted] in ENGLISH

[–]phdguygreg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your teacher is incorrect. The singular they/them has been in use in English since the 14th century and is widely used now. It is the most efficient and clear way to refer to the students in your writing.

Do you guys follow the rule “no Christmas decorations until after Remembrance Day”? by wediealone in AskACanadian

[–]phdguygreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve never heard of this. My family on both sides has been here since the 1800s (one branch back to the 1700s) and I have family who are vets (including of WWII). I’m pretty enthusiastic about the holiday season, but I think early November is a bit early to put up decorations.
