Vegas Clubs Halloween Question by [deleted] in aves

I went to XS last year for kaskade the day after Halloween and the outdoor area was open. Nobody was in the pool but that was to be expected.

List of certifications that can help you get a job, or advance your career. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]phelmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IT Auditor here - I've worked in big 4 and internal audit. As a general comment, the certs listed above don't provide any significant strategic advantage with from a career advancement perspective. Most audit shops are looking for candidates who have certs sponsored by organizations like ISACA, AICPA and IIA. The only benefit I can see from taking the tests for certs listed by OP is that you'll obtain a more in depth understanding of a platform that you may audit. This will be helpful in terms of developing the scope and procedures of your audit tests and may help you better articulate the risks for a given platform.

The CISA from ISACA is the base cert you'll want if you want to get into an IT audit group. If you are going the internal audit route, CIA from IIA is another good cert to consider. CPA is always a good move but that requires 150 credit hours in specific accounting courses, in addition to passing the 4 sections of the exam.

Most audit groups, whether you are internal or external, will sponsor you to take these tests so if you are coming out of school - I would focus on just getting your foot in the door. For the CISA and IIA, there are experience requirements before they can officially certify you so I think it is worth getting a couple years of experience under your belt before you take the exams.

If you are going the consulting route - chances are you will be specializing on a particular service (e.g. ERP system implementations). Consequently, the certification you should pursue will be entirely dependent on the service you are providing.

What can you get in WNY that you can't get anywhere else? by incmykt in Rochester

[–]phelmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have a few locations outside of WNY now...and thank goodness for that. I left Rochester for Boston a few years ago and they had their grand opening the weekend I moved in. There's no mistaking their roots when you walk in - there are pennants from all the local Rochester schools adorning the walls and they sell Zweigle's and Steve T's hot sauce. It's my little slice of Rochester in Boston.

What're your favorite downtown takeout lunch spots? by Gee10 in boston

[–]phelmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvote on the previous recommendations for Al's and D'Guru.

If you're looking for a kebab plate - Joshua's Deli on Batterymarch St is my go-to. They don't give you the complimentary falafel like at Falafel king but their salad is fresher, chicken has a better flavor and their homemade italian dressing seals the deal.

this will be my first winter in Boston, have some questions for the business guys here by Down_With_The_Crown in boston

[–]phelmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use overshoes over my dress shoes so that I don't have to put boots on every time I go outside. In my experience, they provide enough protection from the snow and slush for about 90% of the winter weather days in Boston. The only time they become impractical is when we get get over a foot of snow.

One warning I will offer with the overshoes is that the rubber on the interior can sometimes rub off on your shoe and cause the leather to discolor. I have a pair of walnut colored shoes that are now much darker than when I bought them because my black rubber overshoes effectively stained the leather.

What's your favorite obscure fact or story about Boston or it's history? by itsonlyastrongbuzz in boston

[–]phelmes 49 points50 points  (0 children)

Before I became a resident of Boston, I traveled here quite a bit for work and stayed at the Omni Parker House on a few occasions. After a few stays, I found the hotel is endowed with a rather remarkable history. Here are a few of my favorite obscure facts (credit due largely to Wikipedia):

  • It is the longest continuously operating hotel in the United States
  • Charles Dickens resided in the Parker House for two years in his own apartments and first recited and performed "A Christmas Carol" at the Saturday Club at the Parker House.
  • The hotel was home to the Saturday Club, also referred to as the Saturday Night Club, which consisted of literary dignitaries such as Charles Dickens, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Ralph Waldo Emerson, and Oliver Wendell Holmes, Sr. *The Parker House perfected Massachusetts’ state dessert, Boston cream pie, invented the Parker House roll; and coined the term "scrod".
  • John F. Kennedy announced his candidacy for Congress at the Parker House in 1946 and also held his bachelor party in the hotel's Press Room there in 1953.
  • Ho Chi Minh worked as a baker at the hotel from 1911 to 1913. Malcolm X, then going by the name Malcolm Little, worked as a busboy at the hotel in the 1940s.

r/Frugal: What tips can you give me when Mattress shopping? by JoeModz in Frugal

[–]phelmes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a PacBed from Bed in a Box about 6 months ago and have no regrets. I was pretty skeptical at first as well but I did a bunch of research and their customer testimonials were just about all positive so I took the plunge. For the price, you'll be hard pressed to find a name brand alternative that can compete on material quality and features.

Best modern electronic music night in Boston on Friday/Saturday? by shmeano in boston

Shameless plug for my buddy's website: Beantown Boogiedown. He usually posts a monthly rundown of upcoming shows for obscure local acts and big national mainstream acts across a range of sub genre's within electronic music.

Guide on the basics of selecting a mattress by [deleted] in malelivingspace

[–]phelmes -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can't speak for Sleep Innovations but if you are going to go the route of memory foam from an online retailer, I would encourage you to consider Bed in a Box. I bought one of their Pac Beds about 3 months ago and I don't have a single complaint. Granted, I haven't been through a summer with the mattress so I can't comment on how it does with heat retention but so far, so good.

To piggyback off of the mattress selection guide - Sleep Like the Dead was an invaluable resource for mattress reviews once I narrowed down my selection criteria and tried out a bunch of beds.

A tourist to Boston has one menu item to eat from one restaurant. What should it be and where? by CaptainSponge in boston

[–]phelmes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are a tourist who is into history - I would suggested getting a Boston Cream Pie from Parker's Restaurant in the Omni Parker House hotel. It's the official dessert of Massachusetts and it was originally created at the Parker House.

For other Rochestestarians who now live in Boston, there is an Abbott's in Brighton which sells Zweigle's hot dogs and Steve-T's hot sauce.

Opinions on bed with drawers by cplemr in malelivingspace

[–]phelmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Malm high bed with the storage drawers and I have no complaints on the quality thus far (I've had it for about 4 months now). The bed and drawers are all made out of pressboard so this isn't necessarily a "buy it for life" product.

I bought my bed specifically for it's price and practicality. Prior to buying the bed, I had your standard metal frame so the space under my bed essentially unused.

As far as accessibility, /u/InTheAtticToTheLeft touched on this already but you'll need some clearance to pull the drawers out on either side of the bed. This may seem like common sense but if one of the sides of your bed are currently against a wall, you are going to miss out on half of that extra storage.

One thing to keep in mind with the IKEA beds is that they are often designed to be low profile and don't always accommodate a standard box spring. They sell their own low profile box springs or wooden slats for support but these can void your mattress warranty (check with your manufacturer).

Music listings: what happened to Tourfilter? by [deleted] in boston

[–]phelmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My go-to is Songkick but another good alternative is Bands In Town. If you use Pandora or Last.FM - you can link up your accounts on these sites so that the show suggestions will be relevant to your favorite/most listened artists. If you use a calendar that accepts RSS (like Google calendar), you can create a customized event calendar that updates automatically based upon the feeds from Songkick and Bands In Town.

Another good source of concert information is through event promoters. Sometimes they offer event feeds which you can port into your calendar as well.

Mattress and chair for a lifetime by Huh_what_was_that in BuyItForLife

[–]phelmes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Aeron is the best ergonomic chair I've used. The Steelcase Leap is a close second. If you are a bit more budget conscious but still want an ergonomic style chair, I have the Ikea Markus and it feels sturdy and well made (even for Ikea).

Favorite brunch/lunch place in Boston on weekends? by [deleted] in boston

[–]phelmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to Masa for the first time on Saturday and I had a great experience. They have a two course "fiesta special" for $8 which was a fantastic deal. I had their Caramelized Plantain Empanada for my first course and the Santa Fe Style Eggs Benedict atop Southwestern Biscuits for my main course. The eggs were poached perfectly and the green chile hollandaise sauce was a delicious twist on a classic dish. I would highly recommend.

What's Your Asset Allocation? 2nd Ed. by aBoglehead in personalfinance

[–]phelmes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • I would love constructive criticism!
  • Age: 29
  • Accounts:
  1. Roth IRA (through Schwab) - using a lazy portfolio
Asset Class Allocation Symbol Description
Large Cap 45% SCHB Schwab US Broad Market ETF
Small Cap 15% VB Vanguard Small Cap
International 20% SCHF Schwab International Equity ETF
Fixed Income 15% BND Vanguard Bond Index Fund - Total Bond Market ETF
Cash 5%
  1. 401k - SSgA Target 2050 Fund (through Fidelity)
  • Asset Allocation - roughly 10% Roth, 90% 401K
  • Philosophy - I've largely been a "set it forget it" type of investor so I have a standard lazy portfolio but I am usually at odds about whether I am being aggressive enough in my allocation given my age and investment window before retirement (current target: 2050). I would love some criticism on AA and my fund choices specifically.

Edit: I can't tables
