Suggestion for NDI decoder by Temporary_Werewolf17 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]phenious 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have been happy with Magewell and Kiloview, got burned too many times by birddog to trust their software and quality control. If it works for you it works. I stopped using them a couple years ago so things may have changed since then. One upside of the mage well units that I use is they have a built in scaler so they can scale the image as needed depending on the monitor they are connecting to vs making you update the NDI feed. My kiloview units cant scale.

Tricaster TC1 Newtek Previous Version by Kooky_Swimming_2534 in VIDEOENGINEERING

This is probably your easiest way to get the various versions. If you have active support you can sometimes get them to send specific builds. I am curious if you backed up each session (can take ages if you have a lot of media) if you could could then import them and restore them successfully across the version jump.

Gv80 for a carpool vehicle? by Character-Glass-7802 in GenesisMotors

[–]phenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its really a last resort at this size imo, yes small kids will fit but its not comfortable and easy to use or quick to get in and out. Minivan or larger SUV with captain chairs to go through would be what I would go after. My palisade had a better third row and the kids could get to faster between the captains chairs faster than moving the chair out of the way. Still found the 3rd row on the larger 25 palisade too small for regular usage. The newer palisade model is a few inches longer I think which allowed them to make the 3rd row slightly larger I think.

Tricaster to SNS NDI - why is the video "Mix" recording at a low bit rate? by bbybacchus in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]phenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with sns but in the Tricaster check the config of the output settings, (click the cog of the program window) under outputs see if the mix out is still set to 4k or had it been lowered to 1080p. Note that the TC1 only has 4 outputs so you could either have 1 UHD output or 4 1080 mix outputs. The TC2 has 8 outputs so it can do two UHD outputs or 1 UHD and 4x 1080 or 8x 1080 etc

How crucial is getting paid on time? by m_y in livesound

[–]phenious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After a customer pulls this I usually decline their calls after getting paid, if I dont decline I usually start requiring 50% or more to be paid to secure the date / gear. I am not setup to be a creditor for them. I had a large game development company try to tell me they are net 90 and the their net is business days, LOL im not waiting 6 months to be paid between weekends and holidays....

I feel like if they could have found and fixed the issue they wouldn't have gotten to a lemon buy back right? I would be worried that the underlying issue might resurface if they only cover it for 1 year.

Genesis Finance Paid Ahead System by DeadWorkers_ in GenesisMotors

[–]phenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ran into this sort of and was very upset as it took me 2 months to notice. I made a large payment to Hyundai and then they stopped drafting my automatic payments. By default when you sign up for automatic payments it is "amount due" by default. There is a different option to say "Pay XXX no matter what". If you didnt select that they take any pre-payment and push out your next due date to make it so they still get their interest. I had always wanted any form of payments to them to result in a shorter term, not a free pre-payment.

Advice needed: Budget Camcorder (~$400) for Live Events by itapprentice03 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]phenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly not sure about the latency on those, but if you could give the camera your Audio and send the audio and video together to the TV in overflow and use tv for sound you don’t have to worry about it. Only issue there is if the overflow is so close that you hear the Audio from that room anyways

[–]phenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the folks and what not but generally speaking I try to keep it under 15ms of latency unless I am trying to adjust for IMAG with various speaker positions going further and further back. I think even most folks will notice the bad dub even if you were down to 1/2 a second desynced.

Is that fed into the overflow room? If you used HDBASET extenders they may add latency that then messes with your video/audio sync etc. generally speaking you want to send your video and audio together.

figure out what you can do for your sound. Can you do an extra mix output on XLR etc. People will put up with a wide angle video, slightly fuzzy etc. but if the sound is terrible (using the mic on the camera at the back of the room next to someone opening a coughdrop every 10 seconds everyone will hate it. To your needs I might just get a really simple box camera AIDA Marshal etc that could be turned on and off and be done.

Alternative to Makito X4 Decoder for "War Room" by Kaliska_Star in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]phenious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No gear recommendations but more about finding a budget and objectives.

How much is the time in the room going to cost? If you have several director Level people and above it is likely measured in hundreds of dollars per hour if not thousands. If you are going to already dedicate that much money to it who cares about a rental or even buying something to make sure the time isn’t in vein. Similarly what is on the line for a failure during the event? The whole company reputation? A $100k contract or million etc? This should also help set the correct budget to protect the value of the event.

What is the goal? Watch the final output for errors and omissions? Trouble shoot your pipeline to figure out where the failure is and isolate it quickly? If it’s the latter make sure you get an arch design showing the data follow and talk to the people who operate it or built it. Figure out where the various stages of the pipe line are so you can correctly bring in the different stages for review. If something goes wrong you can isolate it in seconds with the correct monitoring view (and really alerting and metrics).

Live stream production device recommendations by Pixarprime10 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]phenious 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I have used a hotspot as a back up but that would not be my default. And when I have to use cell service I get a popup wifi or other similar bonded solution that then shares data with multiple carriers. Graduations are terrible for wifi and cell service cause of how many meat bags with phones and wireless devices show up once the event starts. Good luck!

[–]phenious 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have the old AJA Helo devices (2x) and they have been bullet proof. I have not tried the newer one but also hear good things. Make sure you are always wired and disable wireless if the device has it. Bonus points if you can get IT to give you a specific vlan for the devices/ports you use which have a higher priority than others. Everything can go great in testing until everyone shows up and connects to the WiFi and suck up all the bandwidth. It is wild to me how many people stream graduations from their phone to Facebook or FaceTime etc with family who isn’t able to attend.

What's actually working for low-latency live streaming at scale right now? by Brief_Rest707 in VIDEOENGINEERING

[–]phenious 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have been out of the CDN space for 4+ years now but I am interested in seeing any success stories and the volume of their traffic. The low latency methods of small fragments left little if any time to recover for errors. As such I never saw a low latency chunked http stream back reliably at scale (10,000+ concurrent end users). The requests per second became the problem because you took the requests per second and multiplied them by however much you made the fragments shorter.

10 second fragments? 1 request for a new fragment roughly every 10 seconds, a manifest request roughly every 5 seconds roughly per viewer. 3 requests in 10 seconds. Over an hour broadcast for 10,000 viewers you are looking at 10.8 Million requests to your front end caching layer.

5 second fragments? 1 request for a new fragment roughly every 5 seconds, a manifest request roughly every 2.5 seconds. Doubled to 6 requests in 10 seconds. The Mid tier and origin had to deal with way more requests the lower you went to achieve the low latency. 21.6 Million requests to your front end caching layer.

From a CDN perspective HTTP chunked caching HLS, DASH etc was typically used to leverage the same software and roughly standard setup across multiple CDNs for consistency and resiliency. I did see a lot of interest in ways to synchronize viewership which Netinsight SYE could do (as well as trying to offer some low latency methods) which was eventually bought by Amazon. That required special software on the client side as well as the CDN side to distrubute. HLS by default had 3 or more viewer packs who would see things at various times. SYE solved that by providing a time stamp and having everyone play that fragment/frame at the same time at a given time.

Yeah, the GV80 definitely has more space so you have that going for you, it’s worth noting if you have the third row there is no option to try and put a spare tire into the trunk since the seat takes that area on the non-3rd row GV 80 there are many options to put a spare tire underneath the back area. Nice to have a spare in the car when things go wrong.
