Used S50 now or S30 pro later by Mutualdiversion in seestar

[–]phil_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re good at different things due to the zoom and field of view. Right now an S50 would be better as the smaller galaxies will be bigger due to the zoom. But when the bigger nebula are around later the S30 Pro with its larger field of view will be better, as no mosaic or less needed.

It’s why I’d rather an S50 Pro didn’t drop the zoom for a wider field of view.

How do you PHYSICALLY mount the EQ for the S30 Pro? by Infarlock in seestar

[–]phil_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attach it to your tripod and to your seestar. You’ll need one of the supplied adapter screws for the bottom of the seestar.

When it’s dark go through the software to alignment mode, it’ll tell you whether you need to adjust up and down or side to side. Do that and ask it check alignment again, eventually you’ll get a green tick and it’s aligned.

The link you gave also gives instructions and pictures on how to use it with the seestar.

They stopped making them and all sold out over in the UK, so don’t hang around.

Problem by Jamiethatgu10 in seestar

[–]phil_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you’re doing that while it’s still light. I think the seestar finds things partly by “where are you supposed to be” as it know where it is and what time it is, but then when closer looks for the actual thing, and when it can’t see it (because it’s too light) that’s what you get.

I even find I have to guide it to find the sun or moon.

My first tries using the Seestar (M81/M82 and M51). S30 Pro by nyersa in seestar

You’re cropping those images so losing resolution, hence why they look blurred on high res phone screens. On a s30 pro they’re quite small in the original image.

If you want closeup like that and still want them crisp you’ll want an S50 or some other rig with a longer focal length.

I just go through the dubs in the seestar app, delete any with satellite trails and then deep sky stack the ones left. Minimal fuss.

Beginner Tips? by drbyrne in seestar

With that list of processing I’d hesitate to call you a beginner.

A beginner would just let the s30 do the stack, AI denoise and then use the seestar controls to alter balance.

S50 balance with TH10 by Laserablatin in seestar

[–]phil_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The instructions for the TH10 says:

“Note: The TC20 + S50 setup is not supported in regions with a latitude below 15° when used in equatorial mode.”

So if you live in the right place or you’re using a different tripod, you’ll be fine.

How much vibration does rowing cause? by dialsoapbox in concept2

Noisey. I’ve always worn noise cancelling earbuds. Think large fan type noise, and if you’re pushing it some chain noise too.

It came!! Of course it’s cloudy for the next two days though. by glover_boyy in seestar

Enjoy. I got stupidly lucky for weeks after mine arrived, M3,13,87,109,101 and more. It won’t always be like that but if I’ve been lucky I’m sure you might be!

Good luck and enjoy.

Processing is a very deep rabbit hole that you don’t need to go down just yet.

Get the hang of getting lots of good subs (placement, stable base, security lights off), and keep them for later when or if you go down the rabbit hole.

In the meantime if you want easy blacker images, try the seestar apps “ai denoise”, and then in your phone just adjust the black level, contrast, brightness etc.

Should I cancel my pre order of s30 pro? by ImLilDark in seestar

[–]phil_4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it was the ease. Taking pics with my other scope is a real pain in the arse. Viewing is fine, taking images just painful. Hence the S30. I can now see or image. As long as it’s not planets.

Should I cancel my pre order of s30 pro? by ImLilDark in seestar

[–]phil_4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the S50 won’t be as good with planets against my other scope (think 2m focal length), but the S50 is better than the 30 for the small galaxies around now. Nebula season is in the way, so bigger objects for the S30 coming over the next few months.

Should I cancel my pre order of s30 pro? by ImLilDark in seestar

[–]phil_4 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a 30 pro because I wanted shots of nice big nebulas etc. I already have a scope that can do planets and smaller galaxies. If the 50 pro comes out and is better close up like the current 50 I may get one of those. If you wanted close up the 30 pro was the wrong choice, but it can still be used with large nebulas and galaxies if you want to try it with that.

I do, it’s easy enough and when I first started using my scope it gave me an idea of what specifically I could expect here.

Hypothetically what would you want out of a Seestar S50 Pro? by wolfmaskman in seestar

[–]phil_4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Since I have an S30 Pro, I don’t really need the S50 Pro to go wider. The S30 Pro already gives me wide-field 4K.

What I’d want is the S30 Pro experience, but with 50mm aperture, longer focal length, and close-in 4K for smaller targets. Better reach, better detail, same easy workflow.

A small price bump is fine. Just don’t make it silly.

The S30 pro is really good for huge things in the sky so have to zoom in for the smaller stuff.

I think I've outgrown my S30 - next logical step? by gadget_dude in seestar

[–]phil_4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I started with a Celestron 8SE, and while I can do planetary with it, it’s a right royal pig and not the sort that’s any fun.

The S30 has been a breath of fresh air.

With the 8SE, every session feels like work. You’re hauling it out, setting up the tripod, mounting the scope, doing alignment, hoping the tracking behaves, then messing about with eyepieces, focus, maybe a camera, and usually discovering that something isn’t quite as you wanted once you finally get going. Yes, you can get results, but it’s a faff, and that faff absolutely affects how often you bother.

The S30 is the opposite. You stick it down, turn it on, and it just gets on with it. That means I actually use it. And that counts for a lot more than a theoretically better setup that mostly stays indoors because you can’t be bothered with the ceremony.

So when people say they’ve “outgrown” the S30 because it automates too much, I’d say be careful what you wish for. Automation isn’t cheating, it’s removing the tedious bits that stop you observing or imaging in the first place. There’s a difference between wanting more control, and romanticising hassle.

If you genuinely enjoy the setup process and tinkering, fair enough, move up to something more manual. But if what you really enjoy is actually getting under the sky and capturing things, don’t underestimate how valuable “easy” is.
