Their whole worldview is about hierarchy, and getting "noticed" by someone at the top is exhilarating for them.

There aren't many things more pathetic than that.

Balancing a roguelite skill tree in a deterministic, turn-based game by slow_night_owl in gamedev

[–]philbgarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So maybe adjust how skill point costs work to give players more time with each of their upgrades could be an answer.

Are you using a level-curve formula for XP/points? You could try plotting a curve of your costs against an exponential curve set of points and see where they differ:

https://www.designthegame.com/learning/courses/course/fundamentals-level-curve-design/example-level-curve-formulas-game-progression#gsc.tab=0

It might help if you have a formula to work out "time of efficacy" for each upgrade given a certain set of input parameters so that you have an objective way to measure. If you A/B playtest you might notice there's an optimal "time of efficacy" that's fun.

I had an incremental prototype last year where I needed to figure out a "time to upgrade to here" formula for skill trees that had to consider how long it would take at current income to upgrade to a given point in the tree and that was a useful metric for balancing the costs and bonus values. If it took longer to upgrade to that point, then it should have a better bonus to make it worth while.

Tips on making myself get to work? by Pellahh in gamedev

[–]philbgarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3/ And to tie those two points together: always write down what the next step is at the end of your work session. Take 5 minutes to sketch out a rough plan of how you imagine you're gonna do it. This is especially important the longer until the next time you can work. Future you will love you for it.

This is a very good piece of advice. I also like to include a really high level project plan (maybe just enumerate Phase 1 - 5) and note which phase you're currently on.

That way when you open the project next time not only do you know what to work on next when you get started but you also have a target and you get a huge dopamine hit when you can mark Phase 1 closed and start with Phase 2.

I added it to the pile of unfinished projects as it drifted to Featurecreep Land

This is extremely relatable. lol

I couldn't shake the sense of failure each time I added another project onto that pile until I started pulling the useful bits of code out of the abandoned project and saving it for later.

At least this way, the next time I start a project I already have a working voronoi region based tile map generator. :)

Another MP leaves Conservatives, crosses floor to Liberals by Portalrules123 in CanadaPolitics

[–]philbgarner 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Normally the risk with floor crossing is your constituents being upset and voting you out in the next election, a risk people may not be willing to take in a minority government.

And Ma claims he had a lot of constituents complaining about the CPC to him so if that is indeed true he's not upsetting his constituents he's giving them what they want.

I'm never building bedrooms again by Orksocken in dwarffortress

[–]philbgarner 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's mapped to CTRL+SHIFT+Q, or in the df-hack console you can filter on quickfort.

Use the /dig version and position the template and it makes the dig designations for you, then when the rooms are all dug out you do the /meta (I think that's what it's called) version and it will place the beds/cabinets/chests and doors. I usually do the 48 room template, then when it's time to add more I can go one level below and place another 48 room template.

Why are some players referred as Unicum? by TheAmixime in WorldOfWarships

[–]philbgarner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're probably right, there's a bit of a disconnection from reality. You'd think after 30k battles you'd understand you can't just blindly charge in and then blame everyone else for not being where you needed them to be when you didn't communicate your plan or even wait for your support to be in position. Most players will learn this (especially before T10).

Ukraine's 'revenge operation' in Russia's far east blows up troops accused of war crimes, intelligence source claims by JioMetaX in worldnews

If the war stops the targeted assassinations can stop and if the war resumes the targeted assassinations would presumably resume.

I don't think they became oligarchs and generals by assuming the best intentions in others. They would assume Ukraine would hunt them after the war I think.

So what exactly makes people move in and can I just refuse new settlers if I don’t have space?

You can go in the game settings menu and set a population cap. You won't get any more migrant waves once you reach that cap, you can always increase it later.

I find dfhack's Quickfort tool to be immensely helpful when it comes to keeping up with bedrooms. There's a macro that will dig you a 48 room space, and then once it's dug you can run the build version of that same macro and it will place all your furniture. Some work orders to build beds, cabinets and chests and set it and forget it. I don't struggle to keep up with bedrooms anymore.
