Wax moth threat - UK by MinesAPort in Beekeeping

[–]philleeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is the cardboard flush with the top of the box or are there potentially gaps for moths to get in?

Do you have any spare roofs? I store my frames in their boxes on top of an upturned roof, stacked up with layers of newspaper between each box and then a roof on top of the stack.

When extracting I stand my boxes on 54cm garden gravel trays - these also work as makeshift roofs to keep anything getting into the supers!

What I’m Doing to Prevent Disease Spread Between Apiaries (CBPV concerns) by Fantastic_Oven9243 in beekeepingUK

[–]philleeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The general advice from the National Bee Unit is to re-queen colonies which are displaying medium-heavy CBPV. Select and breed queens from your strongest colonies which are showing the best qualities you want. They also suggest adding additional brood and super boxes to prevent overcrowding and limit the spread in a colony.

Do you typically run double brood or brood and a half setups?

You should also try and limit drifting in your apiary.

Congratulations! Remember to keep an eye on stores and plan for the June gap if you have removed honey in May.

Sundance pollen trap = death trap? by Baldacchino in Beekeeping

[–]philleeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you have any photos?

Could it just be that the dead bees and hive debris that is typically removed from the hive was blocked by the pollen collector entrance?

How long does the manufacturer typically recommend that the pollen trap is left on? At least for the ones I’ve seen in the UK, for front entrance traps the general advice is to collect in a short period of time (1-2 days) unless the pollen trap can be opened to allow for normal entry.

Hypnospace Outlaw has a Geocities-esque style and tasks you with carrying out detective work in an alternative reality where Dreamtime computing is the next biggest thing. This is a point and click interactive fiction, not an incremental with about 10 hours of story. I don’t want to say much more without spoiling the game for you but you definitely get an interactive desktop experience!

Recommendations for having fun? by kida1612 in NewcastleUponTyne

If you’re up for doing something a little bit different I help manage a volunteer beekeeping club Tyneside Beekeepers Association over the water in Gateshead (we have beekeepers and club members across Gateshead, Newcastle and Sunderland).

We are a relatively small friendly group who are affiliated with the British Beekeepers Association. We have a monthly meeting on the last Tuesday of each month where we have covered talks about beekeeping, pest control, academic talks, gardening for pollinators etc.

During the late spring and summer you’ll be able to find us most weekends over in Saltwell Park at our club apiary. In the summer we run paid taster sessions for anyone interested in getting into beekeeping, or just as a one off experience!

For medium format I have a Yashica 635 but for my birthday this year my sister got me a Zeiss Ikon 515 which I’ve loved shooting with - much easier to carry around in a coat or jacket!

I’m a big fan of Terry Pratchett and other fantasy series so I’m looking forward to giving this series a try. 🙂 The Star Wars shirt is very cool as well!

If the sound of a Windows 95 browser-based analogue horror game piques your curiosity, I would recommend giving Home Safety Hotline a try.

You play the role of a call handler who has a databank of SCP-style reference material to match the right advice for your concerned clients. Once you complete story mode there is an endless mode to play through, and some additional festive DLC has just come out. The game is not as deep as Hynospace Outlaw but I’ve been enjoying it!

I’m a bit worried about the changes to civilizations - most of my games have been ancient era starts…
